Daggerfall: Inn's that Ain't.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:00 am

Found another of those peculiar 'Taverns' which are on the map as 'Residences', and this one's even open to explore. Baelmarket Moor in Dwynnen, north a little ways of the tavern 'White Castle' on the eastern edge of the town map. It's clearly an Inn by texture and floorplan-- has a pub sign out front-- even has the trio of bartender, serving wench, and scullion standing in the lobby... but it's a residence, and offers no services. I've found three or four of these around the game, sometimes they're marked 'this house has nothing of value' (Singbeth, in Glenpoint is one) and you can't even go inside, and other times (I found one in Tigonus, though sadly didn't mark the town) they're completely empty with no one inside at all. In each case, the tavern doesn't show green on the town map, and is considered to be a residence for game purposes-- sometimes it even gets marked as a named residence for quest locations! I have to wonder if, in the hundreds of towns around the bay, there aren't other guild and business structures that are like that. Is there a 'fighter's guild' tower someplace that's a residence? A Mage's Guild? If so, are any of them on the (seemingly) random list of buildings for sale at the bank? Think about it-- somewhere, there may be a genuine tavern for sale as a house. :)
Keep your eyes open people! You never know what fun little thing Daggerfall may throw at you next! And if anyone finds a tavern for sale-- or anything else unique, let us know.

*Footnote: Before someone brings up the Thieves Guild building that's patterned after a Tavern, this is not one of those. I'm familiar with the Thieves Guild structures and these buildings use the actual tavern floorplans.

These could be empty houses for the purpose of Fighters Guild quests, or even more likely just the reminence of features that never made it into the final version of the game. But then again, I have no idea.

This is what I love about Daggerfall. There's always something new to discover each time you play it, and sometimes what you find has no explanation to it.

In Gothway Garden? Are you sure? I've never noticed one there before, and I just loaded up Daggerfall and had a quick look around the town, and still don't see any fake inns. All the buildings I can see that have inn textures actually are inns. Whereabouts in the town is it?
Has to go places just by running? You're not using fast travel at all? You're a far more patient fellow than ever I'd be, sir.

My personal guess is that they're just a glitch in the random algorithm they used to generate the towns originally. Sometimes, it may have dropped an inn down with the wrong marker code, or something, and it wound up being classified under 'residence'. No inn marker, no name, and no services. Which makes it possible, I suppose, for it to also be picked up as a 'house for sale' if the method used by the bank to generate its realty lists somehow catches it. I really don't know either. Don't suppose we'll ever know for certain unless someone actually finds one for sale someplace. Still, it's fun to see things like that sometimes.

Indeed, I did this for a while too, but it just got too boring for me after a few days of play. Once DaggerXL makes more progress the terrain will be much better to run around in, I might actually try playing like that again.

Well, I'll be. You're right, I never even saw that before. It's one of the sort you can't even go inside, sadly, but there it is, all right! For RP purposes I may have to start treating those things as private clubs and threatening to crash the joint.

I certainly think it's possible. I don't see why anything that's recorded in the game as 'residence' can't be on the sale list. But not every town has a bank, and even things on the 'house for sale' list can't be bought unless there's a bank there (which I hate, because I see really nice places all the time in towns with no bank). But I don't really have the time to visit every province looking for banks and then checking the list. Geeze, that'd take months, wouldn't it?
