Daggerfall lesser gods

Post » Mon Sep 27, 2010 6:16 pm

I was studying gods of Tamriel, and noticied that there was many lesser-known dieties in Daggerfall, while Eight Divines (Talos seems to be unpopular in Illiak Bay ...at least at that time :)) and sixteen Princes are well depicted.
Of course, better way to investigate such things - playing the game; but unfortunately it will take too many time I don't have at moment.
So I looked in game resources, but I don't think this method can be considered as full investigation.

I found this list, with Eight Aedra and most likely Baan Dar, but there also six less known dieties.
Spoiler
  • Raen - God of Agriculture
  • Arkay - God of Birth and Death
  • Zenithar - God of Work and Commerce
  • Notorgo - Messenger God
  • Mara - Goddess of Love
  • Shandar - God of War
  • Akatosh - God of Time
  • Julianos - God of Logic
  • The Bandit God - God of Thieves
  • Dibella - Goddess of Beauty
  • Jephre - the Storyteller
  • Vigryl - God of the Sea
  • Q'Olwen - (wisdom?)
  • Stendarr - God of Mercy
  • Ephen - God of the Wild

Never saw this in-game, is there something like this? In which conditions can this names be displayed?

Also I found list of different shrines of Illiak Bay. Later I saw this list on UESP, but there nothing useful besides description of generic shrine.
Spoiler
  • Reliquary of Raen
  • Shrine of Bandi
  • Shrine of Mai
  • Shelter of Phen
  • Anvil of Ebonarm
  • Altar of I'ric
  • Divad Monument
  • Shrine of Jone
  • Shrine of Jephre
  • Reliquary of Sai
  • Shrine of Vigryl
  • Shrine of Dugrod
  • Jhim Sei Shrine
  • Sage Monument
  • Jode Shrine
  • Shrine of Q'Olwen
  • Shrine of Ephen
  • Strenner Haven
  • Kieran Theatre
  • Djen Lodge
  • Notorgo Altar

What is the purpose of this shrines? Which advantages they provide? Are they all appear the same?

  • Raen, God of Agriculture, his shrine is Reliquary of Raen. Mentoned in "King Edward", fragment a bit unclear to me, but he seems to be Springseed, "handsome blond man, greenclad, with a bow".

  • Bandi. I didn't find anything except that his shrine is Shrine of Bandi.

  • Mai. The same thing - his shrine is Shrine of Mai.

  • Phen - Ephen? Or just a similar name?

  • Ebonarm. The God of War. Described in "The Ebon Arm", mentoned in "King Edward", very popular diety in the Illiak Bay and on this forums :). He is more or less understandable.

  • I'ric. Described in "King Edward" as ArchMagister of the Crystal Tower. Hmm, similar position as Syrabane or Phynaster - Hero, Mage, Ancestor-God?

  • Divad. Famous Divad the Singer, Hoon Ding?

  • Jone, Little Moon God, also have shrine in Illiak Bay.

  • Jephre, the Storyteller, described in "Of Jephre". Is he Y'ffre? Seems that he is.

  • Sai, god of Luck, perfectly described in "King Edward". His shrine is Reliquary of Sai.

  • Vigryl, seems to be one of seldom Gods, connected to the Sea. Is he the same as Vir Gil, who briefly mentoned in "King Edward"?

  • Dugrod - didn't find any information.

  • Jhim Sei - mentoned is "King Edward" aloneside with Jeh Free in context of singing and playing.

  • Sage (Sage Monument). Is he the Sage, hero of the book with same name, the great wizard Gyron Vardengroet?

  • Jode. Big Moon God. Moon gods are subject of another topic, I think :).

  • Q'Olwen. The odd "(wisdom?)" is all I've got.

  • Ephen, God of the Wild, seems to be Moraelyn's brother, S'ephen; Moraelyn established a temple cult in his memory. As in "King Edward" "His godhood is between him and his worshippers". Also mentoned in "The Real Barenziah".

  • Strenner - who is it?

  • Kieran with his Theatre - hero of "A Tale of Kieran". The culture-hero bard, ancestor?

  • Djen (Djen Lodge) - the same as Dugrod, Mai and Bandi.

  • Notorgo, Messenger God. Briefly mentoned in "King Edward", and in the names of number of spells. "Feet of Notorgo" spell exist even in Morrowind and fortifies speed. God-hero, ancestor?

  • Shandar, God of War (?). His story told in "Mara's Tear", but it makes no sense that he is God of War. This position occupied by Ebonarm, moreover. Maybe there is a mistake? In "Varieties of Faith" written "Stendarr's Sorrow" instead of "Shandar's Sorrow", so maybe it is one diety. One can also compare Shandar and Shezzar, hmm.

Shandar's given way to Stendarr; his story has been immortalized in the mythic pattern, as the martyr. Most of these gods were simply given the ax, and I'm sorry I havn't explored enough of Daggerfall to really comment on the shrine blessings. Maybe think of the defunct gods as hidden in the modern, aldmeri-breton pantheon, by a similar process of African gods masked as Catholic saints, creating voodoo.

What about Ebonarm? He seems to be another one of those culture heroes who may or may not have been Shor.

Yes. It is interesting that in this case Moons are aligined with Mara and Stendar; and at the same time thay are elven Jone and Jode and ja-Kha'jay and Lorkhan's dead body...

Most of these gods were simply given the ax...
I think thay are can be considired as regional deities, so thay don't play any role in other games. Just like most of Tribunal Saints wasn't mentoned in Oblivion.

Yes, this makes sense.
And vice-versa, some of this lesser gods may be originated from separate aspects of "bigger" Aedra (as, after all, all gods are originated from). So, Raen, for example, can be personified "agriculture" aspect of Z'en\Zeth\Zenitar, while Zenitar himself has more important position of Work in general (or may be even some more important).

What about Ebonarm? He seems to be another one of those culture heroes who may or may not have been Shor.
May be... But I don't think he is Shor... Just becouse there is too much Shor in this case :). But there is no facts against it.
Reymon is mentoned in "The Light And The Dark" alongside with I'ric, Moraelyn, Edward; we can assume that Reymon is Reymon Ebonarm. So he seems to be a legendary hero, culture hero. But he seems to be much more important deity, as a lot of warriors acknowledge him, from the Fighters Gulds and Knight Orders to the Ansei Ordens of Hammerfell.

I never hopped on the Ebonarm is Shor wagon, either. I think he's a dead regional god. The similarities are only superficial, as I don't recall roses falling out of Shor's butt.

I suppose they're all gods like Sotha Sil. Not a lot of exposure.

And the "Everyone is Shor" line has always been tired.

A lot of them are mythologized mortals, and a lot are familiar entities by other names - but there is plenty of room in the cosmology for minor dieties that don't have to be molded to the 8 or 16. The number of stars gives you an indication of how many ada there are, which range from the aedra down to animistic nature spirits, and things in-between.

That's the story of all the gods, isn't it?

There may be room, as the bretons appear to have resisted the aldmeri taint, by surrendering to it; again, killing the aldmeri gods with their old gods, in a synthesis of the pantheons, but I suppose we'll need to wait for more lore, before making that conclusion.

I suspect that Sotha Sil was much cooler than most of them :)

If only somebody will provide to us more lore... :)
Anyhow, most of this deities are already in lore.
