Daggerfall Mage's Guild Globe

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:46 pm

Ever since I first saw http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nirn-map-arthmodeusd, I've wanted to see the original source image for Pyandonea, which is the Daggerfall Mage's Guild globe, however despite searching extensively the internet seems to be completely devoid of any images or video of this globe. One day I'd like to give Daggerfall another shot, but as of right now I don't even have a save game outside of the first dungeon, and even if I was outside I have no idea how long it'd take me to get to this globe, or how to do so.

So I'd like to ask a favor of anyone who can easily access this globe, can you please take a picture of the globe for me? The larger the image the better. I don't know if this is a 2D image or a 3D model, but if it's 3D, I'd also like to see every side of the globe, including the top and bottom. It's not even that I think that map missed something, I simply want to see it for myself.

Thanks to anyone who helps!

Excellent! I've long waited for the chance for some actual meaningful discussion and speculation in this forum. An exchange that reaches beyond the veneer of the typical "how do I install Daggerfall?" and "I'm lost in a dungeon" posts.

Anyway, I've retrieved the globe for you using Interkarma's http://www.dfworkshop.net/?p=712. It's nothing remarkable, just a tiny sprite like all the other furniture objects. Fixed orientation, naturally, no other facing angles. Not quite sure where you can actually find these in the game: I don't recall ever seeing one in the Mages Guild, but then again I rarely join that faction. Image is at double scale so that it's slightly easier to interpret:

If you're curious, it can be found under TEXTURE.208, internally named "Exotica".

Wow, even at double scale that's hard to interpret. Thanks a lot for the help, by the way. It seems that just like the figure for the distance of Akavir, the shape of Pyandonea on the fan-made map is a complete guess, and a wrong guess at that. The two shapes appear (to me at least) to be totally different, even with the first one being so small. What do you think? And is it just me, or does there appear to be a landmass below Pyandonea, where Nirn's south pole is?

It's pretty close. I only thing that that 'bay' area on the western side of the island should be mch smaller on the map.

I don't see how that's close at all. On the globe, the land is horizontal save for a piece of land jutting upwards towards Summerset on the left. That's pretty much the exact opposite of what we see on the fan-made map. If the depiction on the map was flipped horizontally it'd work just fine, but it's not.

That globe just seems a bit of a mess all around. Tamriel itself looks to be far too large and fairly disproportionate, assuming that Summerset Isle is the thing just left-of-centre (which is the only way I can get it to match up with anything); there's no way I could see to fit Yokuda and Akavir on there, much less Atmora, unless Akavir was just a small island or something...

Does anyone know how long before the "solidification" of the setting Daggerfall was made?

IMO this is totally a lore question. Not that it shouldn't be asked, but you might get a better answer over there.

It's a lore question but I assumed asking people who play Daggerfall about a sprite in Daggerfall, in the area where people discuss Daggerfall, would be the best course of action.

Regardless, I have my answer, so no reason to move it.

Heh, that's definitely no Nirn I'm familiar with, nothing very close to Tamriel at all. Unless that's actually Akavir... maybe... <_<

It seems that this globe was essentially retconed when Bethesda made http://www.imperial-library.info/content/west-central-tamriel-map-sleighr, which shows latitude and longitude that doesn't come anywhere near matching this globe. If the Redguard map is to be believed, Tamriel and Yokuda only take up the northern half of the eastern hemisphere of Nirn, which makes much more sense than Tamriel taking up nearly half the planet.
