Daggerfall now available as a free download

Post » Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:48 am

Are there any differences between this re-release and the retail version? I struggled hugely to get this game working before the massive DOSBox update and even when I did I had to keep messing around with cycles to get it working smoothly.

They said it's being released as-is, so I'm guess no differences.

Ah, then there's no point in me grabbing this version. I might have to go back to this game and get hopelessly lost in more dungeons. Evil random dungeon creator.

There are things missing from the Arena download?

The free Arena download is the floppy version of the game. The CD version of the game, which isn't free, had voices in the cutscenes and stuff like that.

This free Daggerfall release is the whole deal. Nothing is missing.

When I go to open the Daggerfall zip file I got from the elderscrolls website, a WinZip message pops up saying "Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again." I have downloaded the file three or four times with the same result. I have also followed the given instructions step by step. Anyone know what might be wrong?

Too many people are trying to download the file at once. I guess there's a file server problem and some users are being booted.

Personally I figured the nudity would be enough to keep it from being released. It's less explicit (and less clear) than your average Renaissance painting but some people really get their panties in a bunch over nudity in games.

It's more tasteful than a lot of Renaissance paintings too. Like that nvde Mona Lisa rip-off.

Guys, everyone just stop downloading the file. We need to take turns.

So, I'll go first :P.

This is amazing news! All those silly Oblivion fans will no longer have an excuse with which to evade my wrath - they shall all play this marvelous game. :)

Read the DOSBox readme, learn some DOS commands or type help.

Nero Severus, seriously, the instructions are very straightforward and tell you step by step what to do. Just read them.

Although, I'll say that if the installation is defeating you, Daggerfall will eat you alive. The game doesn't hold your hand, not even in the first dungeon.

I expect Bethesda to reimburse me for the dentist bills now that I've lost all my teeth in the world's most powerful spit-take.

Man, am I ever glad I decided not to get it on Amazon for a small fortune. *crosses fingers on other costly classics like Bloodlines and Planescape: Torment*

Yes the first dungeon will beat the crap out of you if given the chance and laugh while doing it.

Taking turns was a joke haha. I think there's a mirror up, I'll try and find the link again.

EDIT: http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/14752/The+Elder+Scrolls+II:+Daggerfall+Free+Client

EDITEDIT: Downloading at 1.1mb/s (says I should be capped at 500kb/s) from a European server. Almost finished!

I implore all moderators to patrol this subforum like Nazis for the next week or so. The amount of help threads is going to be horrific.

Well I did manage to get through the Morrowind MQ on the PC, this has more to do with my inadequacies with a computer, not as a gamer.
