Daggerfall observations

Can you imagine if a game like this was released nowadays? I do not think it would be received very well even if it was "cleaned up." With the insane difficulty(death lurks around every corner),
lack of a map marker to hold your hand with the huge landmass...I just don't think people would understand...I grew up in the days of the old SSI D@D games and I really miss the difficult RPG's
of the past...thanks for letting an older gamer rant a little...off to pay a visit to Lord Woodborne!

...and the nudity and 256 color gore.

I think those are the real reasons Bethesda doesn't want to rerelease it.

Le sigh. The old awesome nerd market is forgotten. Somewhere along the way, the football jocks who struggled with one fish two fish stopped taunting us for liking computers and took over our games. Whyyyyyyy?

Hehe, back then you had to be a bit of geek just to know how to Install & run the games. No wonder most kids stuck to football and called gamers nerds :P

Thread hijack: So, I was just playing through some of the Sentinel royal family stuff. A certain queen asked me to recover/return a certain heirloom from a certain other location (hardly a spoiler in there, eh?). I spent the better part of today in that dungeon alone. I am ASTOUNDED how big it is. How the heck did they do this stuff? Thank Darwin I made it through and back out.. Sheesh!

Daggerfall wouldn't make it very far as a new game these days, it's true. There is a lot of emphasis on the whole aspect of instant gratification, and running around massive but empty dungeons and landmasses doesn't appeal to the new generations. Of course, I do believe that much of this is due to graphics. We're so used to the high tech lush environments of newer games that Daggerfall looks...pixelated. Back then it was something huge just to be 3D...but there is a lot more pressure these days to be something more.

I think if it was cleaned up, as in given better graphics, and maybe underwear on the nakedness to appease ESRB (:P), Daggerfall would be quite passable. Hell even successful. ^_^

A very creepy game. The music especially. And those rats that squeek and you know they're just nibbling your toes to bone. And everyone either wants you dead, or has you get revenge on someone and make them dead. OK so most random quests do involve you to reteiving a peice of mummy wrapppings, but still.

character update for fun & curiosity:

So, my female Wood Elf Ranger is progressing nicely (though still not good enough in any magic discipline to please those biggot bastiages at the Mages' Guild yet), but was just having a devil of a time in a dungeon today with Ghosts that wanted to paralyze her into submission (what else? First it was spiders until she got bad enough to kick their butts, then the giant scoprions took over, and now these frickin' ghosts!!! *grrrr*).

***minor non-MQ-related spoiler***

The quest was to off some rogue Spriggan that was slicing people up. The thing I didn't expect was on my first encounter with it, after I landed a single blow, the Spriggan interrupted our battle to propose an alternate solution. I was fairly certain the Spriggan hit me first, as I wasn't even facing it when the encounter began, but since I hit it before the dialogue option appeared, I thought I should restart & approach it with dialogue instead. Of course, it attacked me, & one hit killed it, and the "woodsmen can live in peace" or something.. I repeated several times, killing the Spriggan in one hit every time.. I was thinking, WTF? I finally got the dialogue again after a few tries.. Of course, by the time I followed the quest through, I missed my Fighters' Guild deadline, so I got no credit either way.. But, I'm wondering if this seemingly inconsistent, somewhat random thing occurred because my Ranger has Sprigganish as a minor skill, and it's at like 24% or something..? Seems reasonable to presume..

Also, I was quite happy to come across an enchanted Daedric Cuirass in this dungeon, enriched with "Absorb Spell." Way cool! I've never had good armour in Daggerfall before (same old excuse: just never got that far before, and since I've never done custom character generation most of my experience is with classes that prohibit plate). I'm jazzed.. Got a Mithril right pauldron, Adamantium left, Ebony greaves, Dwarvish boots, Dwarvish helm (I think), and now this basass cuirass.. Oh, and a nice robe of Orc Strength as well.

Hmm, it usually brings up the dialogue option with the spriggan when I do that quest and the character I used for those things didn't have spriggan skill. The non-violent solution takes longer, so watch out for your time limit.

Good stuff is hard to come by in dungeons, you're quite lucky. Also if you're in the mages guild, they can sell you some good enchanted gear. You can travel around between guilds till you find what you want.

Any time that you get that Spriggan quest, you should equip yourself with a weak weapon (or use hand-to-hand). As long as you damage him without killing him, you will get that dialog option. Accepting the offer is a successful completion of the quest.

There are several other quests that require damaging a target without killing it. I prefer a Tanto or dagger of the lowest quality of metal I am allowed to use for these jobs.

Good points. I will keep that in mind (Just goes to show you that my brain doesn't work that well as a CRPG adventurer.. I've already successfully completed a few of the (go get my debtor and bring him to me) quests, but it never even occurred to me to use a weak weapon or hand-2-hand.. *D'OH!*)

I've tried to increase my luck attribute at most level-ups to make it easier to find good stuff, but I don't think this character's luck has made it even to 60 yet.. Of course, one of my chars found a bracer enchanted with Jack of Trades, which was sweet (until it disintegrated on me). Unfortunately, as I said, the Mages Guild will have nothing to do with me. I've only got 32 mana now, so the only spells I can currently cast are Baylana's(?sp) Balm, buoyancy & water breathing, which completely drain me, so increasing my magic skills is quite difficult.. (those damn ghosts cast something that saps half my mana, too). It may be a borked character for Mages Guild, but one of my others has already advanced a bit in the guild.. Of course, that char can't wear plate.. *D'OH!*
