Daggerfall - Optimum framerate in DOSbox?

Post » Sat Jul 31, 2010 4:10 pm

Anybody have any tips for running Daggerfall smoothly in Dosbox? I use Doxbox 0.72, but I've heard about CVS builds that are more recent, do any of them run Daggerfall better? I run via Dosbox Game Launcher, with memory set to 63mb, cycles set to "max", and core set to "auto". But there are also some settings that I don't know what they do. My "output" setting is set to "surface", but there is also a direct3d, opengl, ddraw, and overlay setting, which is best?

I'm asking because sometimes in buildings my framerate stutters, especially in the Mage's Guild. Any tips? :ninja:

I tried a few CVS builds a while back just for a test and they performed worse than Dosbox 0.72 for me, these were the older CVS builds though the newest ones could perform better.
As for the various outputs Opengl, ddraw etc and all the scalers its best to try them and see which one you like best, some of them make Df look a bit too "cartoony" for me, so I stick with ddraw scaler none. I've never had framerate "stutters" what I get is the framerate slowing "right down" mainly in larger taverns, my older pc also does this but not quite as bad as Dosbox.

DF runs perfect for me with these settings: What CPU do you use? because if its too weak you'll never get a decent framerate out of Daggerfall.

memsize=40

core=dynamic
cycles=28000
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

I get slowdown in large town buildings, such as taverns and guilds, but that's it. My settings are very close to what you have, Nami. The output settings are just to 'improve' the graphics with scalers, etc. If you like Daggerfall au naturale, then leaving it on surface or overlay and no scalers will get you the best framrate. Also a frameskip=1 or 2 can drastically improve things.

Alright thanks guys, I'll just get used to it for now.

My processor is a pentium 4 2.8ghz, but I'm building a new computer soon and hopefully that will give me a better framerate.
