Daggerfall's Reversed Stereo Sound

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:13 pm

I was looking at the http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=479044 thread, and I noted Freddo's comment on Daggerfall's stereo being reversed when running through DOSBox. At least for me, I'd note that strangely enough, it's reversed on my new computer, even though I run the game natively through Windows 98SE/ME, while on my old computer, the stereo was correct, even though the audio is set to "Sound Blaster 16" on both of them.

I wonder if anyone present has experienced this, and perhaps might know what it is that'd be causing the discrepancy here? And if possible, would anyone know of a way around this? I hardly have paid attention to audio hardware and technology, so might there perhaps be an available driver or something that would even allow me to simply reverse stereo channels for the whole computer?

Just add the line stereo 1 in the z.cfg file.

The problem here is the Sound Blaster Pro cards. There were no proper left/right standard for those. And while you set it as Sound Blaster 16 in the setup program, there must be something that makes the game think it's a Sound Blaster Pro card. Most newer card that were released after DOS that offered SB emulation have SB Pro emulation. Only exception to this (as far as I know) is SB Live! which had SB 16 emulation.

Ah, okay, I'll go try that; I was wondering where there might be a "reverse stereo" option, and was a bit puzzled that the setup program didn't include it, unlike most DOS games from the era (such as Dark Forces and Master of Orion, the other two DOS games I play like crazy)

Yep, that's what I'd drawn the conclusion of, as most programs, as I mentioned, had the option of reversing stereo channels. And yeah, the computer in question is using the cheapie AC'97 integrated audio.

Just a side-note, but the soundcard in my P2/233 which i first played Daggerfall on, and beat it on, had an Ensoniq Soundscape AudioPCI Wavetable soundcard in it, and it didn't play the sounds backwards. It was just like the SB16 in my older system, only it had MUCH better MIDI playback by using an 8MB waveset, and could play more sounds simultaneously.
