Daggerfall slow indoors

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:57 am

Hi all,

I'm running Daggerfall with latest patch in DOSBox 0.72, installed using the guide posted in this forum, at 20.000 cycles which seems to give the best performance for my system. It is strange that although i get great performance inside cities with all these people running around, once i enter a building the game becomes very slow. I remember i had this problem before a long time and someone probably in this forum had posted a small tweak especially for this situation of slow speed indoors. I can't remember it anymore and searching the forum didn't find anything so if someone is aware of this tweak I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks.

I get very drastic slowdowns when looking at stairs and main rooms inside of taverns, for example. I think it is due to the complexity of the meshes present?

I've had this problem, but both suggestions I would have given you are already in the sticky you used. Namely the freesize command and mounting a folder instead of the entireC drive.

Have you tried auto cycles instead of a specific number?
And, of course, a frameskip of 1 or 2 works wonders.

First of all, thanks to everyone who responded.

I used -freesize 1000 but it didn't help and I just mount the folder Daggerfall is installed in, not the whole drive. Frameskip doesn't help unfortunately at least as far the indoors performance is concerned. Houses and inns are the worst. I get 30+ fps in cities but when i enter an inn the fps drops to 3-4. Did you solve your problem just from the tweaks you suggested? Any chance you could post your daggerfall.conf?

Basically that was it. The latest versions of DOSbox helped improve the performance as well. I use no scalers, output=surface or whatever the lowest setting is, etc.

How is your performance now, especially in some of the larger inns and general stores? Can you tell me roughly how many fps you get?

I had a similar problem, but it was resolved when I set the CPU cycles to AUTO... I didn't even know about it until this thread (or at least didn't understand it)

Well, I still get a bit of lag indoors, especially the larger inns and mages guilds. I don't know the fps or even what to estimate it at, but it does slow down still. It may just be down to processing power; you wouldn't think, but running on an emulator takes a good bit of resources.

Does that help the performance a lot?

Give it a try, thats the easiest way to find out.

It really depends on the cpu you are using wether you will get good performance. Dosbox needs quite a bit of processing power to run Daggerfall, especially in Taverns andd other indoor areas. On my DOS computor I don't get any noticable slowdown indoors, so maybe its only a coding problem that later revisions will fix.
