Daggerfall: Stairs?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:54 am

(I can't believe my old account is still active!)

I'm playing Daggerfall, and I can't for the life of me climb stairs. up or down. Every time I try I get a step or two up, and then only vigorous mouse-wriggling and jumping gets me anywhere. This is quite a hassle, and I was wondering: Is there something I've overlooked? Can it be fixed? Is there some fan-patch I can install? Or is my Climb skill too low to climb stairs?

Also, how do I kill that damn imp? It says my weapons are ineffective, and it kills me any time I go near it.

EDIT: While I remember - with mouselook on, can I change altitude just by looking up/down when I eventually learn levitation, without using the mapped keys?

You should be able to go up stairs simply by walking over them. Are you running the game in DosBox, or without? To harm the imp you need a steel or better weapon. Magic also works. Or you can avoid the imp since the first room with one is non-essential. And the later imp in the dungeon can be ran past fairly easily(if the spark spell doesn't kill you first.) I don't think there's a way to control levitation using the mouse.

I've had trouble like that with stairs, but only when in "Crouch" mode. ("D" key if you haven't changed it).

Fairly sure I wasn't crouching (And, yes, I did change the key).

Ah, so the imp has a shock spell that explains my trouble with it. (Note to self: Next time, do not choose "Critical Weakness to Shock" as a trait.)

Especially given that the ancient vampires and ancient liches you meet later in the game are fond of shock attacks as well. I remember the ancient vampires, notably, have an "on touch" shock spell that was instakill for my characters even when they were at a level where daedra lords were easy preys.

Yeah, and it was funny because enemy AI would not consider you dead as long as you didn't touch the ground, and each time a vamp shocked you it jerked you back up. So you went "fry! fal-fry! fal-fry! fal-fry! fal-fry! fall!" There's no kill like overkill.

Well, restarted and this guy apparently doesn't have any problem walking up stairs. In fact, I'm fairly sure he just teleports past them, since he spends less than a second going up that ridiculously huge staircase in Privateer's Hold. So, problem solved.

i think hes talking about the one right before the first bear, when you go through the room with the archer. my guy does that too, but other stars are just fine. i think i have climbing as a skill though...

anyway yeah.

and you should be able to kill the imps with a steel sword or better.

quick question:

whenever I am in combat, I try every swing, and just about none of them hit. however, the forward stab always hits, and is usually a 1-hit kill in the first dungeon. why is this? is there any way to make my other attacks actually work?

Diagonal Slash: Increased damage potential, Very difficult to strike.

Horizontal Cut: Base damage potential, Base skill needed to strike.

Vertical Chop: Much increased damage potential, Very difficult to strike.

Thrust Forward: Much decreased damage potential, Very easy to strike.
