Daggerfall: stuck at the end of the main quest

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:46 pm

Hi all.

I've been playing Daggerfall for a few weeks and having a blast with the game, but I got at the end of the main line and I'm hopelessly stuck. I retrieved the Totem from Castle Daggerfall, gave it to the Underking's agent, and I can't proceed any further. According to every walkthrough I've checked (including UESP) Nulfaga is supposed to contact me immediately after I hand over the Totem, but she hasn't, and if I go to her the game won't let me speak to her. I tried reloading an older save and giving the Totem to someone else, with the same result. I tried waiting a year game-time and nothing happens either. I feel really frustrated being so close to the end yet unable to continue or even find out what went wrong.

I'm using the 2.13 patch, with the CompUSA quests and the latest version of DQFIX. I tried FIXSAVE on a game just before and after giving away the Totem with no result. According to walkthroughs I checked I've done everything required to be able to proceed. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate them.

Alternatively if someone if someone has a saved game from just before or after getting the Totem that would be great. I don't mind having to use a different character so long as I can finish the game without restarting from scratch (and even then there's no guarantee I won't run into the same problem again).

Although I have no idea what the problem is, I am replying to give your post a bump.

I wish you luck....

See http://www.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Daggerfall%3a%44FQFIX&curid=65520&diff=466230&oldid=459179 (the first diff-block in red)

Unfortunately this was a bug in DFQFIX. I hope you have an earlier save...

Amazing, I get stuck yesterday and the fixed version gets released today! I did have a save from just before talking to Brysienna and going after the Totem, but that was my oldest and unfortunately the problem was already present, so using the new version hasn't fixed things. Ah well, thanks for the pointer anyway.

This exact thing happened to me, I haven't been able to finish the main quest either. I pretty much just gave up.

Unbelievable. DFQFIX is still being regularly updated? Anyway, what version does this problem exist in? I have an old old old old version of DFQFIX, 0.6 according to the readme. Am I safe? Should I update? Is it even advisable to update your installation when you have pre-existing saves with an older version on them?

I don't know how much good it does once the main quest has already started, but I updated to the newest version today. My saved games are still working fine if that was a concern for anyone.

I couldn't tell you. I only noticed about said bug because it was in the recent changes at UESP this morning and I have an interest in keeping an eye on things related to Daggerfall. From what I understand, if you don't have any active quests which are affected in your saved game, you're fine. While the main quest is obviously overarching, it's actually a collection of smaller quests, so while I may be wrong I think that if you're not actively pursuing it you're fine.

I started my game of Daggerfall with DFQFIX 1.8, updated to 1.9 very shortly afterwards (it had just been released), and now updated to 2.0. From what I can tell there is no problem whatsoever going from an old to new. The way Daggerfall seems to work the game reads the questfile when the quest initiates then never looks at it again, so updating halfway through a quest simply means you won't get the benefits of the new fix if it affects a quest you've already started. However I have noticed that saves made with newer versions of DFQFIX are not compatible with a game installation that doesn't have DFQFIX at all. Loading such saves without DFQFIX will crash the game either during reloading or very shortly afterwards.

Unfortunately I can't say for sure which versions are affected. UESP just mentions "versions pre-2.0". Frankly, aside from this one problem I had, the fixpack is amazing. There are dozens of bugs in a wide variety of quests, some of which can never be completed without the fix. If you're still quite early in the game I'd wait a few days to make sure the issue has been fixed for good, then get v2.0. It doesn't eliminate all the bugs (there's not much that can be done about the stability issues and the crashes without rewriting the whole engine - looking forward to DaggerXL!) but it makes the game MUCH more playable.

An update to DFQFIX was posted today; the readme suggests a convoluted work-around for your bug, Pilgrimz.

According to PLRDLF's talk page the bug has existed since DFQFIX 1.2.

You can still finish the main quest if you used the pre-2.0 DFQFIX version. You'll have to install the last version (which is now 2.1) and do the following (do this only after you gave the totem):

In case you are using the patched questfile S0000008 prior v2.0, you can not talk to Nulfaga after you gave the totem to someone who wants it. Therefore you can not end this quest and and can not start the very last quest of the main quest story-line. Since most global variables that are needed by the final quest were already set when you gave the totem away, the only thing that remains to be done is starting the final quest manually.--To do this use the questfiles STARTFIN.QRN/QRC in conjuntion with the patch for quest S0000016. Both are included since since v2.1--You must first set up STARTFIN so that you can get the corresponding quest from any faction you like. To do this, rename the STARTFIN files according to the pattern, which is used for Daggerfall questfiles, see section A) above.Ask the questgiver for quests until he offers you the option to start the Final Quest. Click "Yes" and you will be teleported to the Mantellan Crux at once. Be sure that you don't overwrite any existing questfiles, or copy them back, once the set-up is done. Once you are at the Crux the manual start-up will end after five in-game minutes and as a small recompense you will get +5 reputation with the faction you got this quest from. Quest S0000008 will terminate itself 366 days after you got the totem from Castle Daggerfall's vault. Until then it will be active in your savegame, but this has no effects on the further gameplay, if you want to go on after the main quest was completed. Remove the questfile you used from the ARENA2 directory after the quest start-up is initiated or after the start-up is completed.

For example to be sent to the Mantellan Crux using the Fighters Guild, you can rename STARTFIN.QBN/QRC to M0C00Y15.QBN/QRC (you don't have to be a Fighters Guild member with 'C' kind of guild quests), go to any Fighters Guild quest giver and decline all quest offers until you are asked if you want to do the last part of the main quest.

I tried it this morning and it works, I got Nulfaga's message then was teleported to the Mantellan Crux. Hopefully I'll get the Mantella tonight :)

Or... maybe not.

I got stuck in the 2nd section of the Mantellan Crux (with the pyramid). There's a trapdoor inside the pyramid that wouldn't open, even after I activate its switch (one of the graves in the cemetary).

This is actually starting to become more funny than annoying :)

This could be an issue where you are activating the switch more than once with one click, which can open and then close the door all at once. I remember I had this issue when I was playing Daggerfall straight off from XP. I ended up having to use a program to considerably slow my computer down. If you're using DOSBox, you could try dramatically lowering your CPU cycles before you click the switch, and see if that makes a difference.

I thought this could be the problem too, so I tried lowering the cycles to no avail. In fact I set an teleport anchor at the trapdoor, saved at the gravestone, then just kept trying everything I could think of: different cycles, clicking the stone multiple times, clicking it under different angles, in both view modes... nothing seems to work.
