Daggerfall-style gearing?

Post » Thu Oct 21, 2010 4:25 pm

Hey guys, one thing that disappointed me with Oblivion was the way armors and clothes were handled in the game. It was pretty OK in Morrowind, but not as cool as Daggerfall because of the lack of cloaks, hoods etc.
But Oblivion totally messed this up, with your armor covering every slot from stomach to wrist, no pauldrons, and even not wearable over a clothe.

Don't you guys think like me and want to witness the great return of awesomely IG customizable armors?
Left pauldron/right Pauldron separated
Left glove/Right glove seperated
And layers of clothing, with a new feature: depending on the order you put it.

Like for example, put your leather armor, and then put a robe over it. Or put the robe first and next the armor over it.

I wouldn't mind some cloaks for my ranger assassin but otherwise it didn't really bother me a bit more customization would be nice but it wouldn't be a major thing for me

I'd like to have more cusomizable armor and slots for various pieces, but my guess is that we'll see something more similar to Fallout where some armor sets are just one piece.

One could make a case for this as being more realistic since armor pieces would need to physically fit together well for it to be effective.

Yes preese. I also loved how you could change the configuration of your cloak and some articles of clothing.

I missed the clothing-under-armor options from MW in OB, as well as the seperate pieces which were combined, and wouldn't have minded seeing the options lost from DF make a return. There's an unsubstantiated rumor that Skyrim will do away with seperate armor pieces altogether and go with "sets" like in FO3. That would be terrible, if it's the case.

Daggerfall was so cool, being able to wear a hood of a robe or turn it down.

I think that more ways to customize appearance = better.

And I would also like to see clothes under armour, robe over it and pauldrons and gloves.
Some people are worried about the balance of an enchanted suit.
I would rather have enhanting be really expensive than not having the option to make enchanted gear just the way I like them.

I would love having multiple ways to wear a single outfit like in Daggerfall. Like you could click a cloak and have it hood up, hood down, over one shoulder, over both shoulders, ect. And the same could be done with some shirts and such. If this was done with armor, it would be amazing. Your character could wear that same piece of ebony armor in multiple ways to reflect his or her lifestyle. Maybe like have three ways each peice of armor could be worn, such as a rugged adventurer's look, a more classy noble look, or the standard brand.

And of course I'm sick of downloading cloak mods. Its amazing how much donning a cloak in Oblivion added to the immersion when I started wandering around the Jerall mountains.

Not really, for example you can go with a leather glove and light pauldron for your arm that swings the weapon and a more armored one on the other arm to block a bit.
And they could also cope with sets by adding tiny bonuses to fitting pieces for example? Don't think it's an excellent idea though.

If you what you guys are saying is true and that they are going with one piece armors... That would be terrible indeed.

I am thinking specifically of some of the armor pieces in OB. Namely the Assasins armor (can't remember the name--Shrouded Armor maybe) and the tunic that you can get as part of the Shivering Isles expansion. Specifically the SI piece ( which was developed most recently) and what we saw in FO3 might give some insight to the direction they are taking in Skyrim.

As far as trends go for what we know about Skyrim, they are cutting down on quantity to make room for better quality.

I'd bet that we'll see similar armor slotting as OB, but that we will also see more single piece armor sets.

Separate boots? Wtf? Why not separate plates as well on a plate armor? Or five rings... On each finger? I mean, more enchantment options is the *only* real deal here. Personally I'd settle for:
Underclothing - for warmth and comfort, mostly so it can be customized in mods.
Armor or clothing. Armor in parts and not separate, and clothing (set like a gown, or top, bottom, scarf, gloves, and belt).
Overclothing. Cloaks, capes, scarfs, and hoods (hoods and scarfs replaces helmet).
Jewelry - Two rings, an amulet, two bracelets (incompatible with gauntlets and bracer, but works with glove).

But I want old fashioned "character sheet", where I click on spot and list of applicable items show up, for full control.

The changes in Oblivion were in response to Morrowind's enchanting imbalance when you could heavily stack enchants with the layering and pauldrons. It seems by some screenshots that pauldrons might be back in the game but we can confirm that.

There are some interesting details to be taken from the pictures in the GI article. We see a full suit of what appears to be some sort of elven armor. It only ever appears as a whole. On the other hand there are a number of others that seem to be individual pieces. The most interesting things are an iron looking cuirass with no pauldrons and an X strap that appears to go over armor. It appears over the top of a bare chested player, an enemy wearing either light leather or just a shirt, and a player wearing a cuirass made of large links. We can also see the same bracers used with various other armor combinations and a different kind on the shirtless player. There is a player wearing a hood, but I can't really discern anything else about his garb.

Also, it would appear that no two cuirasses appear with the same greaves. However, it is hard to tell for sure. Each cuirass besides the elven one appears with a different fur and leather combination wrapped around the waist, but each cuirass always appears with the same one. The question is whether this is attached to the cuirass, the greaves, or if the three are one. I am inclined to believe that it is part of the greaves as the shirtless player with the X strap also has a fur around his waist.

There's not much else I can tell from these pictures. Helmets seem to be a separate piece, but I don't think that was really in doubt.

Another thing I'd like to see that goes along with this is the option to choose, say four of your favorite weapons. Those four would go into a special quick menu that you could access something like hotkeying, but more than that, they would show up on the body. Like with your custom armor in your own order, you could then go further and choose to have a longsword, a bow, or a staff on your back, shortsword on one side and a mace on the other. Something like that would definitly help create unque looking characters. And those weapons could be costom made to look how you want with smithing.

Anyway, that's what I'd like to see. Custom armor and armor layering, and then a layer for weapons as well.

In my dream world Skyrim would have all of Morrowinds slots+ accessory and 2 earring slots. But I do not expect this, I expect Oblivion and hope its not like Fallout. I highly doubt seperated gloves or Pauldrons as that can be annoying, though I would still have it over not.

This is what I would like:
Feet, Legs,Torso,Hands/arms,shoulders,head for armor. With Belt,pants,shirt,2 rings,necklace,trinket,2 earrings and robe/cloak,etc with 2 weapon/shield slots. MW had 16 I think, OB had 10(13 with mods, not counting unlimited type ones).

Yeah all these cosmetic changes are nice and all, but for me it doesn't really make a difference.

Read my thread to see what I want:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1157226-i-want-real-armor-depth

For me separate left and right gloves would be more of a hassle, but it would be cool to have a few unique magical single gauntlets that use a weapon slot, say you put on a demon looking glove on your left hand and it lets you cast fireballs from a charge pool like a staff, but would look like a normal cast.

Or it could be a non-magical single gauntlet that replaces one of your "armor" gauntlets on your character model (you'd still be given the full enchantment/armor for those gauntlets though since this is basically a weapon). You could use it both to block enemy attacks (without the damage penalty that unarmed blocking normally gets) and to give your punches significant extra damage.

Basically I want the following base setup:

Inner Clothing (mainly so it can be modded):
Top (bra or inner shirt)
Bottom (underwear or inner trousers)

Main Armor / Clothing
Helmet / Hood
Pauldrons (set)
Curiass / Top
Bracers / Bracelets (set, game considers bracelets as "clothing" for practical purposes)
Gauntlets / Gloves (set)
{maybe - Readied Equipment (hotkeys) / Belt?}
Greaves / Bottom
Boots / Shoes

Outer Clothing:
Scarf / Poncho
Cape or Cloak

Jewelry:
Amulet
Left Ring
Right Ring

The above are buttons on a character (maybe click for traditional 2D character look), and clicking on one, filters the list so it only shows those parts. I'd hate to loose individual pieces because I always make it a minigame (a VERY LONG one) of mine to hunt down and obtain full sets of everything. Clothing should also be more important, and give you an appearance boost depending on with who you are talking to. Ask a kid for direction while wearing full daedric? Poor fellow would never sleep again...

I wouldn't worry about it, children are immortal after all. If they could just figure that fact out we could send them into battle instead of the advlts.

Anyway, on a more serious note, along with just cloths I would like to see a layer for weapons as well. It would add to the unqueness of your character, having your favorite weapons visible for everyone to see. Basically, the more it is customizable, the better. How we look is a big part of our character after all, so it should have a big part of the game.
