Daggerfall: Veteran Tips for Beginners

I don't know if this has been suggested yet. But it helps so much for dungeon exploration. Enchant an item to give you Water Breathing. Swimming in DF is somewhat.....hard. You run out of breath very quickly, so it helps to not have to worry about it.

I did that in Morrowind as well, called it, rather obviously, "Scuba Mask".

Speaking of enchanting. Here is a bit of advice, or a warning. You cannot repair enchanted weapons normally. There is an easy edit to change that though.

Do the Dark Brotherhood require sneak or stealth as perquisites? I want to join them, though I'll be doing things my way, not exactly silent.

And will the death of 5 civilians bring down my general rep a lot? I don't want to ruin everything in the process of joining this guild.

Got a lot of papers? When I sold 38k worth of stuff I ended up with a load of letters of credit, each worth 163. Had to sort that out by carting them all to a bank.

Ah ha! I completely forgot about the lines of credit in Daggerfall. That was it :) Thanks.

The Dark Brotherhood does not require any skills to become a member. I'll warn you now, IF you get caught that's when the guards will arrest you. And they can only arrest you if they hit you.
Also, make sure you do the quest in the time it says! Do quests for them, do not get kicked out. If you do get kicked out, then you cannot get back in without editing your savegame. Mind you, if you become a vampire, you get kicked out of all guilds you're in because you're dead.

Stay out of UESP and spoiler sections. There are some things in the game that are near impossible to find without spoilers, so stumbling upon them is like a miracle. And you'd like a miracle to happen to you, right?

Actually, that's not precisely true. ANY damage will result the arrest dialog coming up... including falling damage.

Anyone know how to check your reputation status with various groups in-game? I have tried talking to a merchant at Ulthores Equipment in Newtower, and he wouldnt speak to me saying something like "I hate your kind, go away" and then no response. I am playing an Argonian, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. But I would like to check my rep with merchants just in case.

Not only that, but even as an Argonian I swim slower than a snail for some reason, and I can't swim up. So I drown pretty much where I fell in.

This happens from time to time. There's no in-game display, though I do recall there being a fanmade utility out there that enables you to check (and even edit?) your reputation.

Swimming is quite hard without a buoyancy spell. I think Argonians can just go longer without resurfacing (not sure). Fortunately, all classes (except custom ones that explicitly disallow spellcasting) can cast it. However, is your trouble going up due to being overloaded? Or is it because you haven't found the "go up" (essential to levitation) key yet? If you're overloaded and need to grab some air, drop a bunch of stuff, surface, head back down, and grab your stuff.

Could someone pleeeease tell me how to climb.
It works sometimes, when I press all keys possibly involved in the process (mouse left, mouse right, jump, walk forward, activate)... but I can't reproduce it.

Other than that, great thread! Some very good tips here. :)

Face any wall and walk toward to a wall and ya would be in Climb Mode. Ya would be facing the wall, going up.

Though sometimes you still can fall while climbing, so don't try and attempt something like Mt. Everest when you're not that skilled.

How do you add items to a cart that you have? I couldn't figure it out. I also figured out why ebony wasn't working on the wraith earlier, it was stuck between the floor, and my attacks couldn't hit it.

Go into inventory. Click the wagon button. The remove items into that wagon inventory.

Umm, that doesn't work in my game. Maybe because I'm using the "wasd + mouse" kind of navigation?
...ah well, maybe I'll get a hang of it eventually.

Hmmmm, I also custom setup my control of that of the WASD and Mouse. How about this, find a wall and keep walking towards it, even if ya face is really close to the wall. If ya think that wall don't work, try a different wall.

Is there any way to change the brightness or gamma in the game? Some of the dungeons are so dark you can't see two feet in front of you. Even Privateer's Hold is dark for some reason.

Your monitor/ screen should have a built in option for gamma/ contrast/ brighness and all that. If nothing else, go to the mages guild and buy or make yourself a light spell.

Unfortunately climbing can be very picky. You have to be absolutely perpendicular (face dead straight) to the wall. Keep walking forward into the wall and make sure the pixels in your view are not moving (left or right). This can be very tricky as you have to move your mouse ever so slightly until you have a dead on angle to the wall. I'm not sure if your encumbrance effects how easy you can climb?

I did take it. My first character was supposed to be a magic slinging ranger type, but without taking any magery advantages, he had a whopping 30 spell points to play with. This guy is a high elf, took critical weakness to paralyze to see if it would negate my high elf immunity or not too (not sure still!) and now I have almost 200 to play with.

Seems like the 3x advantage is one of the better ones if you plan on using magic at all.

Quick edit here. Also, I don't know how to climb =P I just run at a wall straight on, and it seems to go into climbing mode but then I instantly fall off. I've heard of people climbing over the Daggerfall wall when they get out of the tutorial dungeon. I can't get 1/10th up the wall!

If a High Elf takes Critical Weakness to Paralyze, Immunity to Paralyze trumps it. It's basically free points, though most would consider it an exploit.
Climbing is a skill. Keep trying and your skill will go up, and you'll be shimmying up the walls in no time. It's good for quick escapes, though of course Levitate is easier if you have the spell points.

Nice....you should put that in the UESPwiki if it isn't there already.

hit "select" and you'll cast your spell. If it's a touch spell, you need to be right next to the person. To cast the same spell again, hit your recast button. For me, Spells is R, casting is space, and recast is Q.

I also found it very confusing at first, so don't feel bad.

Double click the spell. If it's anything but a destruction spell, it'll take effect immediately. If it's a destruction spell, you need to click (like talking to people and opening doors) the target.

Assuming you're using View Mode, spells that require you to select a target literally require you to click your target (the use key won't cut it). So you'll have to press the key to re-enable the cursor, I believe by default it's ENTER.
