Daggerfall: Veteran Tips for Beginners

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:43 pm

Sure thing.

#1 rule of Daggerfall: save often!
#2 rule for Daggerfall: use multiple slots for one character!

First is because the game can crash randomly. It doesn't happen nearly a often as people like to say, but it happens.
Second is because saves can get corrupted. You'll be glad you had a backup if this happens.

Mouse Freelook: Yes, Daggerfall can be configured to use mouselook so it plays similar to Morrowind. Hit ESC -> Controls -> Mouse and switch it to View.

Now with the rest of the controls, look for "activate center object." This is what you use to 'click' on whatever you're looking at. However, there is no crosshair to help you point at something; luckily you can always "activate cursor" to get your pointer back when you need it. Helpful for when you have to pull a lever or pick up a small vial from the floor.

Horse And Wagon: General Stores sell horses and wagons, in addition to the usual stuff. Horses can be ridden by pressing T, and also really speed up your fast-travel time. Wagons help you carry a ton more stuff--however, they cannot be accessed while you are in a dungeon. Clicking on the dungeon exit while inside a dungeon will ask you to either exit the dungeon or access your wagon without leaving. It is nice that you can access your wagon without leaving, because if you leave the dungeon will reset!

NEVER BUY MORE THAN ONE HORSE OR ONE WAGON. The game will glitch. besides, you can never sell them back, so you'll be stuck with them forever.

Daedric, orcish, impish, etc. are languages not armor skills. There is no armor skill. Language skills are largely regarded as useless. The speechcraft skills are etiquette and streetwise.

There are also good guides around at the UESP, http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/, and I also have a guide on http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/29065/50211, to name a few.

I wish they would pin this topic and the one on installing Daggerfall, I had to dig to page 6 to find this topic just now, and it was on top just a little while ago!

Since all of the tips so far have mostly been for people who approach the game right, I think it's time I gave one for the cheaters and power gamers out there: if you want to advance fast, go outside of a town and spam rest. Out by Daggerfall (the city) is a good place to do this, since you'll generally be heading out there anyways and it's very easy to see where the town ends and the wilderness begins (basically, the bumps start where the wilderness starts - this is pretty important, since resting in town is illegal and the game won't give you any warning before sending the guards out for you if you try it).

So, stand just a little ways out into the wilderness with enough room to back up a fair distance (but still within sight of the flat land around the city), face away from the city, and rest for 99 hours. Eventually an enemy will interrupt your rest. If it's weak (rats, bears, bats, most humanoids for example) then kill it. If, on the other hand, it's something like a spriggan or zombie (at lower levels, at least) and you aren't feeling particularly brave, turn tail and run back over to the flat part around the city - when you reach it, it'll load in the city and the enemy that's chasing you will vanish. Then get back onto the hilly bits, rest again, and repeat. Your skills and level will shoot up pretty quickly thanks to the fact that the enemies that pop up are scaled to your character, and you'll be able to find some amazing loot since drops don't seem to be limited to you if you're at a low level (expect to have at least one piece of elven or dwarven equipment before you hit level 2 or 3). And yes, this is basically cheating, but if you're finding the game hard it's a good way to tilt the scales a bit more in your favor without having to put a lot of effort into it.

Also, for combat, there's a trick that has worked in every single game in this series, and it probably works better in Daggerfall than in any of the other games. When fighting an enemy, move backwards constantly when you aren't attacking. When you are attacking, do the motion for the attack FIRST, and then move in when you reach the point in the animation where it hits the enemy (usually just about where the weapon is fully extended out), then quickly start backing away again. If you can get the timing down right and you have enough space to move, you should be able to make it virtually impossible for enemies to hit you (especially since enemies that use ranged attacks don't generally use them when you're that close in).

One other thing worth noting, and this one's a bit less cheap: weapons don't have a "best" way to be swung, but the direction you swing your weapon can actually be really, really important. It affects both accuracy and damage, and as a rule the more downwards you're doing an attack the more damage it'll do and the less accurate it'll be. That means that you should match the swing you use to the enemy you're fighting. Enemies like spriggans are ridiculously hard to hit but don't have all that much health, so stabbing is best with them. Enemies like giants, which can't dodge nearly as well but can take a decent amount of hits, should usually be approached with a solid downward swing. But in general, figuring out what to use with each enemy is going to be a matter of personal experience - your character's stats are going to have an effect on how easy or hard it is to hit enemies, and your approach should be to figure out just how inaccurate of a swing you can use to still get in a reasonable number of hits but do as much damage as possible.

I figured out how to equip my blades, but can't swing them. The tutorial said to press the right mouse button, but nothing happens when I do. The game controls said to press M2, this just brings up the map. Any help?

press and hold the right mouse button, then move it around to swing it around. Different mouse directions swings it in a different way. And make sure they're abrupt and prompt movements too.

Get money quickly (the powergaming way):

Goto an exceptional quality store with a wagon and loiter until after closing time.
Rob the place blind (yes, you can just take everything with no fear of guards)
Go outside, rest until the stores open again, and sell everything back either to the same store or to a very poor quality store (I think they pay more to buy and sell for less)

Open any town door cheaply with no fear of guards.

Go to the mages guild spellmaker
make a spell with the following effects:
Open on touch 1% chance + 1% per 2 levels.
It will cost about 5gp, and about 2-3 mana to cast.
It will open every single locked town door, allowing exploit one to be used.
It will not open any internal door, for those you need a proper open spell, or a good lockpick.
The guards will not chase you for casting this spell (unlike trying to pick a lock or bashing a door in)

Also, if you feel you are gaining reputation very very very quickly but not gaining rank within a guild, go for a journey for a month or so and come back. There have been numerous times where a simple overseas holiday got me rewarded with the next rank (or three) in a guild

My tips to start a good game are:

1) Install the game and the 213 patch
2) Extract the http://www.uesp.net/file.shtml?dagger/files/addquest.zip in the ARENA2 folder (they are official but were released with a special CompUSA edition back in 1996)
3) Extract http://uesp.net/wiki/File%3a%44FQFIX.ZIP in the ARENA2 folder (to keep Morrowind and Oblivion players terms, it's a kind of 'Unofficial Daggerfall Patch' however it fixes only quests)
4) Open your z.cfg file and change the following lines:
pathcd d:\dagger\arena2\
...
controls betaplyr.dat

to:
pathcd c:\dagger\arena2\
...
controls viewplyr.dat

This will make the exe point to your Daggerfall installation directory instead of your CD (of course change the D and C letters according to your own configuration). The second modification will toggle mouse look mode with WASD controls already set like in any modern first person game.
5) Run DOSBox and setup your sound to use MPU401 for MIDI music and Sound Blaster Pro for sound sfx.
6) Start the game, make a new character (say 'yes' when asked if you want to use the tutorial) and once in the game, switch to full screen mode to get rid of the bottom menu (which is unused in mouse look mode). You will then see the same life, mana and fatigue bars on the bottom left as in Morrowind and Oblivion, and a direction compass on the bottom right.
7) Once you're done with the tutorial (your character should have exited the dungeon and be in the Daggerfall city at that time), look at MarStinson's excellent http://www.tesguides.com/tes2/index.htm to get some nice playing tips.

This just ruined my games. Apparently you advised something that isn't right.

Remember, you may sleep in Fighter's Guild buildings without breaking the law if you are a member.

Members of Knightly Orders stay at inns for free.

You may join as many guilds as you like BUT you may join just one type of a Temple and just one type of Knightly Order. Also some Knightly Orders are actually Temples.
Since you cannot join another Temple once you joined one and since they offer different services, i recommend making a little reseach first. You may look at http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/guilds.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/arkay.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/akatosh.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/dibella.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/julianos.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/kynareth.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/mara.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/stendarr.htm
http://www.izhtex.com/tes2/guilds/zenithar.htm

Or you can always save before joining and look at the services. Or if you can understand which guy does what, you may have a look inside the Temple before joining.

For people who just wants to jump into the game may select Barbarian. You won't have enough magic but you will have decent weapon skills to survive the early part of the game and get a hold of combat system.

This just ruined my games. Apparently you advised something that isn't right.

There are some additional steps
First copy all different files from ARENA2 folder of Daggerfall CD to ARENA2 folder of installation directory. These are movie files. You may copy and overwrite all files but then you will have to install all the patches again.
After that point you wont have a use for cd, i.e: the folder which you mount as cd.
REMEMBER, to start the game you have to write FALL Z.CFG instead of DAGGER

You may edit DOSBOX config file to automate all the mounting and starting the game for you.
To do this, open dosbox configuration for edit:
At the end of the file you will see:

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.

Write all the commands there instead of writing them everytime you start the emulator.

example:
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c c:\dosgames -freesize 1000
mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall
c:
cd\dagger
dagger

OR example (if you have copied the additional files from cd):
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c c:\dosgames
c:
fall z.cfg

After that, whenever you start Dosbox, Daggerfall will start.

If you install a later version on DosBox, copy the [autoexec] part from the config file from old version to the newer version.

I recommend installing, copying additional files from cd, patching, making all the custom configuration such as keyboard mapping, mouse look, installing additonal content etc..
Then you will have a standalone daggerfall folder which is customised just for you. Backup that folder. It is all you will need in the future if you want to install the game again.

The other does not belong to Daggerfall. It is the configuration file of Dosbox.
It must be where you installed dosbox. In Windows I can find it under start menu->programs-> dosbox 0.73-> configuration->edit configuration
If Mac has a similar OS it should be easy to locate

probably not, but ill ask anyway - any way to set or hack in 'wasd' movement options in the game instead of the old style underworld 2 mouse arrow movement controls?

The game isn't *that* old :P - you can customise controls from the menu screen in-game to anything you like.

My tip would be to excel in Speed - the game is huge, so running is particularly useful (especially in dungeons where horses are unavailable), and weapon swing-speed in combat will increase drastically with more speed. I try and start every new combat-orientated character with about 90 ;)

I'm pretty new to the Elder Scrolls universe. I've recently picked up Oblivion and loved it, but that's the only Elder Scrolls game I've ever played.

What are the main differences between Oblivion and Daggerfall? I thought the game would be horribly dated, but from the videos I've seen the graphics are tolerable and the world is still suprisingly detailed, and from what I've read, it appears that Daggerfall is actually more interactive and has more depth than Oblivion does, which really surprised me.

I really wish there was a way to be able to just "click" on my mouse to attack instead of having to move it back and forth. I've got a wireless and a ratpad xt, so my mouse just goes sliding ridiculously.

Daggerfall does has more depth, so does Morrowind. Not to dissuade you from playing Daggerfall, but I'd definitely look into Morrowind first, to see in reverse how Bethesda has kept up with the gaming crowd.

How does one kill a wraith? >>

I thought the game would be horribly dated, but from the videos I've seen the graphics are tolerable and the world is still suprisingly detailed, and from what I've read, it appears that Daggerfall is actually more interactive and has more depth than Oblivion does, which really surprised me.

Asking that in past games isn't the best way to get a good, honest answer - most of the people here are absolutely in love with the older games, and don't care for Oblivion much at all. That said...
  • Daggerfall's combat is built far more around strategy and character stats than Oblivion. Like I'd said earlier, the direction you swing your weapon actually makes a pretty significant difference, particularly compared to either Morrowind or Oblivion. Stealth in Daggerfall is also entirely stat-based, so don't expect shadows or darkness to be much help. And unlike in Oblivion, speech is a simple exercise and speech skills are largely useless - most people will just tell you what you want to know, and if they don't it's just a matter of asking it to them a different way or asking someone else. There's not a whole lot of persuading going on.

  • Daggerfall's gameworld (the areas you walk through, not necessarily the lore or any of that) is much, MUCH larger (the map is so large that it can take upwards of 45 minutes even to make it across short distances between locations if you decide to actually walk rather than use fast travel, the dungeons are immense and labyrinthine and can be very hard to wrap your head around and actually navigate, and even the cities can be a bit hard to make your way through unless you make good use of your map), but also far less varied (most of the towns are just randomly placed cubes with triangular prisms on top that are retextured based on the region, the wilderness ranges from mostly flat terrain with little bumps to fairly jagged terrain with big spikes but generally is uniformly textured for each region and provides no paths to help you in going from place to place or even anything of any particular interest, and most all of the dungeons are made up of brick or underground caverns or a combination of the two and are made from obvious set pieces so that they tend to all start looking pretty much the same after a while).

  • Daggerfall's quests are also a lot more plentiful (randomly generated, so you can get an infinite number of them) but a lot less varied. Expect to spend a lot of time killing a random, arbitrary monster in the middle of some dungeon in the middle of nowhere within a set time limit.

  • Daggerfall's harder. Yes, the fact that it's an older game makes that a bit of a given, but even beyond the standard "enemies are more of a challenge" there's also time constraints. Even in the main quest, you are usually given a set time limit of a number of in-game days to complete a quest. If you don't complete the quest within that time limit then the quest is failed, and if it's an important part of the main quest then the main quest is now impossible. It's not like in Oblivion where you can take a billion quests as you com across them and then do them "when I feel like it" - in Daggerfall, you damn well better be ready to do a quest WHEN you take it, because if you don't there are consequences (even if it's not a part of the main quest, failing a quest means a drop in reputation).

  • The game handles crimes a lot better. You won't be escaping from your cell, but you will be brought to court if the guards catch you. There are different crimes with different sentences (vagrancy is only a few days in jail, but something on a bit of a larger scale like murdering crowds of people can result in hundreds of days spent in prison or even in banishment), and you can plead not guilty (though pleading guilty will reduce your stay).

  • Daggerfall's a lot less "prudish". If your character is wearing nothing, they will actually be naked - no glued-on underpants in this one. Also, there's nudity. A lot of it. There are also prosttutes. You can't hire them, but only because that feature (like many others) was dropped before release. Also, at least one of the books has a bit of a six scene described in fair detail.

  • Daggerfall's writing is a lot better. There are two main quests. I won't spoil the second one for you, but the first one is made up not only of necessary quests but also a large number of other ones that you can do to get more background on the letter that you're supposed to be finding, and it's actually presented as a mystery. There's intrigue, suspicion, and it's honestly presented far better than any of the plots for any of the other games in the series. No competition there. Even outside of the main quest, you'll find that quests tend to be more well-written, even if they have less variety. Also, there are multiple endings - you have a bit more control over where things go.

  • Your character can do a few more things. You can climb walls, for example. With the right spells, you can fly. You can bash open locked doors unless the lock is magical. If you're carrying enough stuff, you can walk underwater (and by "can" I mean "have to" - if you're too heavy, you won't be able to swim).

  • There are a lot more "flavor" features in the game. Things like banks, where you can deposit money or purchase houses, or carts that help you carry your things, or the ability to buy a ship. They don't really enhance the game itself much (if at all), but they definitely help make the game world feel more believable.

  • The game has a much stronger sense of atmosphere. The music is far better, and does a far better job of conveying a sense of adventure while you're wandering about, or of mirth inside of a tavern, or isolation at night in a cold tundra, or fear in a dark crypt. Darkness generally means you can't see far ahead of you, and while you're in dungeons you'll be hearing doors opening and the horrible screams of the undead masses that could be waiting around each turn.

  • Daggerfall is not a finished game. This is important. With the latest official patch it's fairly stable, and with some of the unofficial patches a lot of the bugs and issues left over can be fixed, but it's still not finished. There are spells that don't work and there are skills that do nothing.
It's a flawed game, and you'll probably find it a little repetitive, but at the same time it does all of the most important things (the flavor that brings the world to life, the music and subtle touches that give it its atmosphere, the brilliant main plots and generally good writing, and all the little things it lets you do that help you get that much closer to your character) well and that can go a long way to helping you to ignore its many failings.

There's an unofficial patch?

Can it be used with a current save game? I've only just saved exactly as you create your character, but I put quite some time in creating him.

I am running it on a Mac, so I can't find the configuration file. I have found the z.cfg file, but the other I cannot.

~/dosbox.conf (~ = the home folder, ex /home/matilda)
If you are not sure, type in this in dosbox: " CONFIG -writeconf dosbox.conf" which will create dosbox.conf in your home folder.

Edit: its very importent to mess around enogh in the config, and using ctrl+F12 to find the best speed to run the game in.

No idea about save game compatibility, since I generally either install before I start a new character or I never do install (I'm running without any of them right now).

There's actually several mods in the files section of UESP.net. Some of them are fixes. Some of them add new quests. And one or two of them are fairly significant overhauls. Install Andyfall if you think the game is too easy.

I strongly recommend installing DFQFix and QUESTPAK (Install QUESTPAK first, to be safe). The CompUSA quests, in particular, are well worth it.

If you want to go on crime sprees, Do them outside of the provinces of Daggerfall, Wayrest, and Sentinel. You do not want the guards to arrest you when you walk into the major towns for criminal conspiracy, specially since those are the major provinces in the game.

The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guilds will not show up on your map. For the Brotherhood, you must kill innocents, but be warned that guards will come after you. For the thieves guild, you either need to break into a house or successfully pickpocket many people. You could pickpocket monsters in dungeons if you want, this counts.

All locked doors leading to inside houses will be able to be opened with a simple 1pt open spell. However, you need the 'open' spell, not just the effect, for a mage's guild quest. Same for the sleep spell.

If you become a Lycanthrope, you must kill innocents to satisfy your blood hunger. Failure to do so will reduce your maximum health. The best artifact for a Lycan is Hircine's Ring, since it gives you all the advantages and none of the disadvantages. I'll let you find the ring yourself, since that's part of the fun.
