Daggerfall: Veteran Tips for Beginners #2

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:57 am

I think I've encountered a glitch, because I can't talk to Princess Morgiah, the princess of Wayrest. I got the letter to deliver to the KOW inside a dungeon, and I gave the letter to the KOW, but I can't give the letter back or talk to her. When I click on her in diologue mode, nothing happens. There is no "you get no response" message. I can click on her in info mode and see her, but I can't talk to her. Any help?

This also happened during the temple quest where you must go around and talk to people because of a prophet.

I am not given any message when I get a disease. It's only if I want to fast travel I get a message warning me. That sometimes is too late. When you're running around a town or wherever, you are used to not seeing the bars full. Should there be message? If not, this is another bad design decision by Bethesda.

You can press I or click on the compass to check your health status. Sometimes you get a message "you feel somewhat bad" but sometimes not. Remember that because diseases have incubation periods, it is likely that the disease will reveal itself while you travel. I don't see how this is bad design.

Hm. Does the lock spell serve any purpose at all then?

No, the lock spell is broken and doesn't even work.

It sure does. The first popup will give you the time and date, the second will either say "You are healthy." or something else if you've contracted something.

Nothing happens when I click on the compass (I use view/full screen mode) and 'i' only gives your legal position, like 'unreliable' or 'common citizen'

Right, it tells you the date and time and your legal standing. When you click that off, another popup should come up giving you your health status. Does for me anyway.

Scampers is right. First you get the time, date, and legal rep. Click that and you get your health status.

As for clicking the compass, I meant the full one in the toolbar, not the small one in full-screen mode.

Yup, seems it was taking my one click as two. Slowed the mouse down and got the second popup. Thanks guys.

Another quick question, does anyone else have the music going 'electronic beeps and buzzes style' sometimes? I have to save and reload the game to get the midi music back! I have the sound set to Soundblaster 16 and midi 401.

This usually happens to a local sound effect, like a torch. If you walk away from it, it should ago away. If it's still there, then yes you will need to reload unfortunately. I don't know of any fix for this.. I remember having this problem even on my old DOS computers in the 90's.

Hallo,

Does anyone else have problems with when you find a map and it says something like "you have found the secret location of the long lost....."(my case Masterston Palace and Anrarugoth) and then when searching for it on the map it simply doesn't appear. I'm sure I havn't died and reloaded and thus missed finding it. All the other map locations with toombs and ruins etc that i've found I've had no problem finding by searching its name.

Anyone who knows what the problem can be?

@MrFresh, I must admit, I equip those maps and never write them down or check the map to see if they're there!

does anyone know if the effects "critical weakness" and "spell absorption" during character creation interfere with each other? I took critical weakness to all elemental spells and general spell absorption. when I got hit by such a spell, I loose health and no spell points are absorbed... though, when I cast fireballs towards my feet, these are absorbed fine...

and another question: when I search a quest-object in a dungeon, don't find it, leave the dungeon and re-enter it, will the position of the quest object due to reset of the cell also be changed?

1) I don't think the critical weakness interferes with spell absorption, but you should be aware that you don't always absorb spells thrown at you. Instead, spell absorption grants you a percentage chance to absorb, based on your willpower (or maybe your willpower and intellect combined, can't remember exactly). The only exception to that is when you cast an area of effect spell yourself in a closed environment: those are always reabsorbed for some reason.

2) Yes, probably. The quest object is always randomly placed at some treasure point within the dungeon. Reset the dungeon, you'll reset the location of the quest object. There is, of course, a chance that the object will be reset to the same location, of course.

3) Tip/Major Exploit: The game will check against your resistance to magic before checking to see if you have been paralyzed, poisoned, or diseased. Selecting "Immunity to Magic" at the chargen phase will also make you immune to disease, paralysis, and poison. You can then select critical weakness to these three effects and bury your difficulty dagger, allowing to select a wide range of advantages at little cost. But note that this is a major exploit of an unintended glitch in the game's programming.

Don't forget the quest item may stay in the same room and the creatures may change to be harder! This depending on your character and attack/defence ability! Once I have really really searched a dungeon, I don't feel bad using my 'Spell of Treasure Finding' (it's a cheat, but given the notorious dungeons in Daggerfall I don't think it's a real cheat in the big scheme of things!), which is square open bracket [ (make sure you set cheat mode by entering 'CheatMode 1' at the end of the Z.cfg file in your Dagger file).

In game, just save, then hit [ , then move (as you could be standing on top of the treasure), then kill any monster/get any treasure in the room, then check your map. If you are in an unsearched area - go and search it. If nothing there, save, then hit [ again. Bear in mind you may end up in a room with three monsters, or under water, so you have to be prepared for anything - hence the save before use of this 'spell'.

For me cheating would be just hitting [ over and over, in quick succession to get to the room with the quest item. By using it in the way I describe above, I see it, seriously, as a spell within my arsenal! Bearing in mind I don't have recall so at the point you're at, I have a long walk out!

yay, that helped me much! the quest location was not a very fair one, behind a secret wall, which curiously was only able to open from inside the room by a torch...
but now, I cannot go back to the entrance because the game crashes with an error telling me, it has insufficient texture memory when I pass a certain position...

What's the best method for getting through those weird hallway windows? It always takes me awhile of crouching and climbing.

MrMuh:

Sorry to hear about your crashing program.

There are a couple of dungeons that have been wrongly designed and that therefore lack connections between the various module blocks (either that, or I simply never figured out how to get from A to B myself). But these are very, very rare. On the other hand, it is not at all unusual that you will have to click on a torch, lever, etc., in one part of the dungeon in order to oppen a secret door, hatch, etc. in another part. Finding the levers and figuring out what they do can be devilishly difficult.

Shades:

Damn good question. I do what you do, or simply view them as "see through walls" and try to find another way to get to the area behind them. I'm not sure what the story is with those structures: they're so difficult to get through that it seems hard to believe the game designers intended you make it through.

Another tip for beginners: you come to a pit with chains hanging above it. These are pretty common. You don't know how to get down without killing yourself. Try clicking on the chains. Sometimes they'll cast a levitation spell on your character.

Crouch-climb is the best (only?) way I've found through those windows. Or launching yourself into the void, that works, too :)

I don't know if this has been brought up yet, but:

You can USE most clothing in your inventory to cycle through its styles. For instance, a cloak can be worn many different ways, as can some robes and shirts. Gives you a bit more customization in your looks!

Can anyone tell me what creature is killing me? I hear no creature noise and I have never seen it, because twice it has got me when going through a door, because nothing was in front of me, it must have been behind me both times. The only clue I can give you is it sounds like I am being shot by a machine gun, in the sound of tap dancing, as in "rat a tat tat rat a tat tat". can anyone tell me what's killing me?

Prop a lich, they are pretty quiet.

I don't know any monsters that can kill in one hit besides liches, ancient vampires, and daedra lords.

I think the scorpions make a ticking noise like that, and they hit like a stack of bricks.

Shades, it not Scorpions as I know their sound. And I don't think it's a Lich as they fire lightning spells and such and have a groan noise. I don't think the "rat a tat tat, rat a tat tat, rat a tat tat" is the creature, I think it's the spell. As that's what Iam hearing as I die, not hearing then and then hearing a spell, but rather hearing that rat a tat as I go down.

Does the screen look like you bounce several times as you die? If that sound is a spell, it could be an Ancient Vampire at close range. When they reach melee distance from you they spend all their spell points on shock spells as fast as they can. That kills most people.
