Daggerfall: Veteran Tips for Beginners #2

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:28 am

Well I have had three restarts. My last 4 quests have failed because of game design/bug problems and I have got to level 5. Don't you think I have given the game enough of a chance?!

You have to cheat or be a powerful mage character to play this game. That's not what I call an RPG. I have come to discover that the spell cost, the spell points given and what spell points do for you are totally out of whack. To be 3/4 of the way to 100% INT and not be able to use a simple OPEN spell because it requires 133 is toally ridiculous by an other Elder Scrolls game or any other real RPG, like the Might and Magic and Wizardry series.

Only through my frustration and 30 hours of wasted gaming have I discovered this game is the game that should have been called something else, to get across that you can have all the character creation in the world (and this game has) and it's worth nothing. When a Warrior AND Thief AND Monk character still need 100+ spell points it makes a joke of the whole creation system! Bethesda must have known these dungeons were going to take 2 hours to search and must have realised for any character created without the ability to use Recall was going to have another hour's walk out ((if lucky!)! As I say, this is why every other RPG makes recall a cheap spell both in gold and spell point price! These two 'overlooks' is just too much for me, and I am sure many others that will create their favourite Morrowind/Oblivion character, which won't be a mage , they'll see 60 INT to start and think that's decent and then they'll play the game and be totally frustrated and just uninstall it. They won't post anywhere, they won't say what I am saying, they'll just move on.

Daggerfall dungeons are a bit too much now, but at the time dungeon crawling huge dungeons was the experience everyone wanted and Daggerfall 3D dungeons with complete free movement, climbing, levitation, huge and complex interior rooms, underground rivers, traps and elevators, the great music and sound effects, the light effects, all this was a blast.

If it's too frustrating for you to dungeon crawl activate the cheats and use the [ and ] keys that will teleport between hot locations that may contain the item you are looking for. Use the mini yellow map to know when you are at a location that is close to the exit.

You don't need an OPEN spell for anything, if you are playing a thief or a warrior. If you find a magically locked door in a dungeon ignore it. There are no magically locked doors in quests you do for the thieves guild.

If you have a character that doesnt uses magic you are supposed to walk back to the exit, thats about it. It doesn't takes hours to do if you are keeping track of where you are going.

forget that! My character does not really use magic but can still pull off a recall, but need full mana.

It's not as bad as you think. Every time you reach an intersection for the first time, click on the dungeon piece in the map, then click down at the bottom of the screen to type a note. If you approached an intersection from the north, just type that the exit is to the north. I do that at every intersection I hit, and no matter how much exploring I do I can get back to the entrance in minutes.

Heh. I was aware of the ability to place notes on town maps, having removed the word "Residence" a few times, but never did I consider putting the feature to use within a dungeon.

Thanks for everyone's advice thus far. It has aided me greatly.

I used to use this feature quite regularly in my "primary" towns, so that I can keep track of the store qualities. An overlooked but handy feature!

You could probably use it in teleport dungeons to keep up with which portal takes you where: a very difficult memory problem, otherwise.

I just write down notes with real pencil and paper. Must be some heritage from playing RPGs that didn't have automap features.

Mr. Fresh:

Sorry I missed your question earlier.

No, it's never happened to me that discovered locations don't show up on the world map. BUT... location spellings are notoriously tricky, and it has (very) often happened that I haven't been able to "find" a location because I'm misspelling it.

Try this: open up your world map (W), click on your country location, and then, at the bottom of the screen, deactivate the town, farm, and temple filters. You should see a map of the country in green with a sprinkling of red and orange dots. The red dots are crypts: those small, two room dungeons that you can use as a base if you're a vampire, or as a means of training if you're low level. The orange dots are either dungeons you've been to (completed quests), dungeons you need to go to (active quests), or dungeons that have otherwise been marked because you've found a map. I've you've not been adventuring too long, and haven't used the "reveal all" map cheat, then you ought to be able to find the location manually.

Thanks for answering! I'll try that approach.

In the town of Cromidge in the country of Anticlere there is a warlock in one of the houses. North east end of town. I was robbing houses when I found him.

I came across an Orc ( I am level 3) who threw spells and where my Dwarven Claymore and Silver Mace material had no effect. What the hell type of Orc was it and would elven had done it or higher still (not possible for level 3 player to obtain),or will it only be killed by spells?

Orc Shamen do that, but I think you can kill them with anything.

Are you SURE it was a orc? lol I think any metal damages them. It is possible to find fairly high level critters at low level in daggerfall, the game is pure evil like that. I was finding ancient vampires at level 2. Luckly the dungeon had plenty of places where I could lose them.

Well, as far as I am aware, there are no green creatures that look remotely like an Orc in Daggerfall? Is there a defensive spell he could had thrown to defend against all melee weapons? Because I think I know when an Orc is attacking, and I know when the message goes up 'that weapon is not effective'! And I know whn I die! :)

hello,
I have some quick questions:
can I put my gold (safely) in a cart or do I have to deposit in a bank?
and in general, where can I store my stuff except of the cart? the homes are a bit too expensive for low level chars... I have read something about ships being safe, but they are also not much less expensive than the houses...

Well, considering I am level 3, I was surprised to find out via the web, that the creature I couldn't hit with elven, silver or dwarven melee and couldn't attack with spells because i was being immediately silenced was a Lesser Deadric monster!!! I am leaving and re-entering the dungeon to hope for a different creature! I am looking for a scroll and have searched the rest of the dungeon, even using the [ cheat. I have run away from the monster and looked in the room, and cannot see any loot (I only have about 4 seconds before I am dead, mind you!),which leads me to believe the scroll must be on this unkillable (for a level 4 character) monster!

Oddly enough, nothing crazy like that has happened to me with my current character. It happened all the time when I had a previous character. My current character seems to get very appropriate monsters for a given level. The things that hurt the most are mages/nightblades with nasty shock spells.

Gold can't be put in the cart unless you have it as letters of credit. Best to put it in a bank. Ships are more practical than houses. You can use them anywhere (well, not in dungeons of course). The little ship is only 100k. It's not too hard to grab that much gold if you dedicate a little time to it. Raiding some crypts, taking everything, and selling it to a "rusty relics" quality pawn shop got me about 50k in a couple of hours when I was low level. Robbing stores at night got me about 100k in 20 minutes or so.

Yes, you can safely put your gold in your wagon. It is treated as part of your inventory, like a big weightless (to you) bag...! I don't understand why you don't want to put the money in a bank You can get a letter of credit which weighs a whole lot less and is acceptable by all merchants, who will just give you a letter of credit back to you, to a lesser value, when you buy something.

As to storing stuff when low level - No no NO!!! You sell everything to get cash, to buy training in the guilds and buy better weapons and armour to protect yourself, so you are alive to be a higher level character that has the money to buy the house or ship that will store stuff!!

hm, who is right? I wanted to put gold in the cart when I crawl through dungeons, so I can take more other stuff in the inventory when going the next turn through it. I think it is better to just leave it in inventory till the next visit in town.

I need some storage because I am a collector, I can't sell magical things or unique stuff, so I need some place for it... a little ship should be fine, I realised one dungeon brings approximately 15k cash, but I should also try the crypts when there is so much stuff.

The one with the letters of credit. Ya cannot drop gold into the cart. Then it would be too easy. When ya "drop" the gold, its gone forever. Better just exchange the gold for letter of credit, though be aware that ya need like a few gold (100 - 300 range) in order to use it on Inns and Ship Rides (those two do not like to get letter of credit).

If you buy a boat you can drop your collected stuff there, but these are expensive.

Be careful collecting too many items. I don't know what the cutoff is as I've never reached it, but I've heard the game begins to bug out once you have too many items either on your person or in storage, and (I believe) will start to randomly delete items.

Boats the most cost effective and efficient storage units, as you can teleport to your ship from anywhere outdoors. Houses require you to actually travel to it's location.

When I started asking about item limits one of the guys here said they essentially fixed the issue with the last patch.

I found storing things at a low level had very little effect on how much money I made. I just sold duplicates and kept enough stuff to make sets of armour, weapons, and magic things. Some things weren't really worth collecting, like ingredients. Clothes too, except for some of the Egyption-looking things that are worth 100 gp. The rest are just cool to have to play with the paper doll thing.
