Daggerfall: Veteran Tips for Beginners #2

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:57 pm

There is one room when I enter my health drains whenever I am moving and I hear a constant moaning sound. Could that have something to do with what I am looking for?

IT'S A TRAP!!

...no, seriously, it's a trap. And no you cannot disarm it.

I thought it was an invisible enemy because the last time I didn't load daggerfall up from dosbox every quest target was invisible!

I don't think it is an invisible enemy because the health drain perfectly coordinates with my movement, so I guess it is a trap.

What about the orcs and the girl? Is this a buggy quest, or am I just not looking in the right place?

To see if the quest is indeed bugged, save your game then press [ or ]. That will teleport you through the several locations in the dungeon where the girl might be.
When you teleport, have a step backward, because you always get teleported on the quest object/NPC and you can't see it.

If you see that the girl is indeed in the dungeon, try to resist the urge completing the quest the cheater's way and reload your save game. ;)

If she is not there, check your journal to see if your quest is still active or make sure you are in the right dungeon.

Otherwise, the girl is most likely invisible due to an evil bug. But failing a quest in Daggerfall doesn't change much. You'll still have an infinite number of quests to perform (But you'll always have the thought that you left an harmless girl to be eaten by orcs)

Thanks for your help, but I finally found her today. Never found any orcs though.

But make sure that z.cfg has "CHEATMODE 1" (no quotes) at the end of the file, otherwise this won't work

She was well hidden then! :)
Glad to see you worked it out.

Another lying quest-giver. They are always lying. Next thing you know, he'll ask you to save his little cousin from other orcs, then his other daughter from the Dark Brotherhood, then he'll ask you to meet his "master" for a duel. I love making up stories about my questgivers' backgrounds with the types of quests they give me. :)

For some reason, I've never needed to add this line in my config file. The cheats work wheter the line is there or not.
(Maybe it's because of the latest version?)

Since there's always questions about trying to find the quest target of a stealing/assassination/other quest in a house or shop, here's a recap:

  • If in a house, check for a ladder. You should be able to click on it to go to the attic, and 99.9% of the time the person is in the attic.
  • If in a house with no attic... just look around! There's only one floor, they gotta be there somewhere.
  • There are occasional bugs where there are two places of the same name, even a tavern or residence. Ask people around town!
  • In a shop, the quest objective will be upstairs. 99.9% of the time this means the second floor, usually in one of the closets of the room on the second floor.
  • The same style tavern always has it's quest objective in the same spot if it's a person you're looking for. Get used to these spots.
  • Also for taverns, quest goals that are objects/items will always be in one of the bedrooms.
  • You will be facing the dungeon when you fast travel there. Sometimes the mound is really hard to see, but just go straight.

Can I get help please?I took a Mage Quest that turned out to be to kill some escaped Imps. The problem is, I have been told I have to 'track them down first'and have been given no location. this makes me think they are somewhere in the town i am in, but nobody has 'imps' in their conversation tree! I tried 'any news' but all they tell me about is an evil Mage I killed, and the fact that on that same quest to find that girl that was mentioned above, I didn't find her, and so am reminded how the quest giver beleives he will 'never see her again'! Talk about digging at my heart strings!

Anyway, can any veteran tell me how to find escaped imps that I have to 'track down' myself? Thanks!

I did that quest like this... I asked around town for "Any News" and eventually someone told me "Have you heard? Imps have nested at so and so dungeon". They won't tell you that the imps you are looking for have went there, they merely say that there are imps at a certain place.

Once you get to the dungeon, you have to find a place where you can rest, it can be anywhere as long as its in the dungeon. Rest and the imps will come to you, fairly easy.

Imps you have to kill are usually in the castle of the town.

It's not the first time that after going up in rank or fulfilling a quest, the questgiver tells me "I have marked a location for you on the map", as a sort of extra goody.

The thing is, I have no extra location on my map (at least I can't know which one it is), and sometimes the barter window opens yet he hasn't got any maps on him I could take (like when the fighter's guild gives you a reward and you take the money - that's the window I'm talking about).

I have no idea how to find out which location they're talking about. So much for a present!

I just got the Daggerfall installed and everything with DOSBox, and I play the game. I push the button S to start a new game and I try clicking on a region and nothing happens so I push all the buttons I can and then esc and it sends me back. So I press L and it goes to load game and its stuck. Anyone?

when got the dosbox window up press CTRL+F10 to set the mouse.

Make a spell to Create Item. If you cast it repeatedly, at first you only get clothes (which you can sell). However, as you level up, you will get weapons and armor. I eventually made a full set of Daedric armor and a long sword.

Just loiter, there are only three thieves. A representative of the mage will contact you when they're done in the other room.

I'm doing a quest for the Fighters Guild where I am to kill a were-something in a dungeon. So far I have killed two or three werewolves but I don't get any messages about the lycantropic danger threat being removed, or something like that as I understand should come. I also tried to return to the quest giver after having killed the first werewolf but I couldn't get him to talk to me at all so I figured the quest wasn't done yet. How many do I have to kill?

You're always out to kill an unusual werewolf, or giant, or orc. Keep killing till you get a message about it. The leader of the giants usually has a tattoo that proves who he is, the orc is usually dressed better, and so on. Just keep killing.

Continuing on this, I found two maps in a dungeon, and I wrote down the names since I was sure that I'll never have another copy of the names. In fact I was write, the game did not store the names anywhere.

-The Gaerham Cemetery
-Coven on the Bluff

For the second one, the dot on the map is BLACK?! Why?

Can someone also tell me what to do with the name (or rather, lack of) given to me in the post I quoted.

Thank you.

I get maps all the time from guilds, and never know what to do with them. It doesn't even add it to your inventory so you get to read the name once, and then it's never spoken of again. :banghead:

It may be black because it's the newest location added to your list. Use the filters at the bottom to knock off types you don't need to see, then you can just mouse over what's left and view the names. It isn't too important if you go to these bonus locations they give you or not, so don't let it be a hang up, but if you generally early on look at the different dungeons you can visit right from the start you can be familiar enough to know which is the new sounding one. Also often times they hand you the map and you have to look at it in your inventory to get the location.

Here's a tip that might be obvious, but I dunno if it's been posted yet:

If you "use" an article of clothing, it will change appearance, so you can customize your character even further using this. :goodjob:
