I'm unsure what to do. Mage guild gave me a quest to "acquire" a valuable item from a merchant that supposedly stole it. So how do I approach this? I waited til after closing time, then use open spell to gain entry, then tried to find this Jade. Items for sale don't have it. Items in private possession don't have them, but guards keep popping up when I rummage, how do they know I'm there?

How do I find this Jade? I've looked in all of the rooms, there's even guards (not the normal one, but guards hired by the merchant). But no Jade

Have you tried threatening the guy?

Having thread after thread, with different sets of tips in them, seems counterproductive. Maybe someone should set up a sticky summarizing the vet tips in one message. (I'd do it myself, but I'm feeling lazy right now. :P )

I think for now the threads will suffice, since people are just asking the basic questions, which can also be found on some FAQ on other sites.

When the threads reach 10, I think someone might create a FAQ list with enough Q&A's.

Just what I think :)

I've been wondering, what's the max level you usually get to in DF?

From the quest description, it sounds like I was supposed to be able to find it laying around somewhere. I also have a note that I need to drop in the house. So it sounds more like a covert theft than a straight out threatening then handing the guy a note and say "have a nice day"

I've been having trouble with the Thieves' Guild. I've gotten the starting quest but it seems that my Lockpicking skill isn't good enough to get in. Should I just keep grinding away at it? Or are there alternatives?

Also does your skill only go up when you succeed? Like if I try to pick a whole bunch of locks but fail, will that improve my rating there at all?

When you are in werewolf form, don't check the boddies or else you'll corrupt their inventories (get a "this body has no treasure" message after shape-shifting back).

If you play a stealthy character, be extra vigilant when checking large open areas for your quest target(on assassination/kill missions), as your sneaking may well mean the target remains hidden in some dark corner unaware of your presence while you pass right by.

Believe me nothing is more aggravating than the experience I just had spending 5hrs working through a dungeon thoroughly exploring every nook and cranny, spending 6days in there and gaining 4 levels in the process, only to eventually give up on any hope of finding my target (I thought he must be behind that underwater door guarded by 5 dreughs) and slog back to the beginning feeling defeated. Then in the room that contained the entrance/exit I walst through without sneaking, as I presume everything was dead, and who should come charging out of some dark corner at me but the DB traitor...

Or are there alternatives?

You can either bash the door in with your weapon, which is illegal and will draw the city guards, or you can use an open spell to unlock it.

Also does your skill only go up when you succeed? Like if I try to pick a whole bunch of locks but fail, will that improve my rating there at all?

Your skill goes up with every attempt, succeed or fail, but you only get one attempt on each door.

The max I've gone to was around 20. It took a very long time and never went further than that since I started a new character.
With cheats, I think you can get around level 30.

Your skill goes up with every attempt, succeed or fail, but you only get one attempt on each door.

This is why I always save my game before picking a door's lock. Because I don't want to wait a day for another try.
It's also always recommended to save the game before trying to bash a house/shop door as well. Sometimes you can catch a nasty bug that makes the said door unusable, wheter for looking at it or trying to bash it.
It often happened to me to bash a door for a minute, only to realize that it could not be used anymore. (And I had to run fast to evade the incoming guards)

I just got the Daggerfall installed and everything with DOSBox, and I play the game. I push the button S to start a new game and I try clicking on a region and nothing happens so I push all the buttons I can and then esc and it sends me back. So I press L and it goes to load game and its stuck. Anyone?

Restart the game, that's a bug I believe because it happened to me a few times. Just quit and restart.

You can't be an imperial, so clicking that region does nothing.

Okay, so it's a random seed? If I save and reload, it won't always be the same result?

It's indeed a random bug. Sometimes the door is unusable after 5 hits, sometimes it's after 10 or 15.
I really hate this bug, especially when I need to meet a contact who decided to lock his residence.

There's an unofficial patch over at uesp.net that fixes the "my contact's door is locked" bug. Before I had that patch installed, I would typically start by attempting to pick the door, and then just start bashing with my best weapon. I generally manage to get in before the guards are both alerted and manage to reach me, or I hear them coming, ride off, fast travel in place to reset the town, and try again.

Can one of you veterans tell me how to play the game when I have a big sheet of paper over the monitor saying 'REMEMBER TO SAVE YOU IDIOT!', so I can remember to save the flipping game before I die!!! :)

Get yourself an alarm clock that goes off every 5 minutes.
You should remember to save this way. :)

..So, i got a quest from a Mage's Guild to hunt down a crazed Wizard in Theodyrick Laboratory.
I fast-traveled there and see nothing but endless plains.

I got already quite a few similiar quests "go there and find that"
But always when i arrve, there's nothing.
Absolutelly nothing
Am i actually supposed to search through the wildernes for a specific dungeon?
Or are those quests bugged?

That only happens once in a long while, usually there is a mound here or there with a door in it that is just hard to see. The ones that get me are the missions that send you to whats supposed to be a dungeon, but it's just a farmstead.

Yeah, just travel forward... STRAIGHT forward, and keep your eye out for a little mound. One side of the mound will have a door in it.

Ah yes, you were right, after fast-traveling a few times to the same location i indeed found a snow mound with a door :celebration:
Thank you.

I had an assassination mission to a farmstead but I could not find the target. Ended up reloading and taking a different quest.

I have been sent to Wicksly's Guard to rescue some girl from a group of orcs. Well, I've been working on Wickly's Guard for like 3 days now and I have finally cleared out the entire dungeon of monsters, but I have yet to find any orcs or the girl. What am I missing?

There is one room when I enter my health drains whenever I am moving and I hear a constant moaning sound. Could that have something to do with what I am looking for?

Are you playing using DOSBOX?

Sounds like an invisible quest enemy to me.
