Daggerfall on Windows 98SE

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 10:04 am

Hello,

I've installed Daggerfall from the TES website on my Windows 98SE retro PC (AMD K6-IIIE+ 550MHz, 256MiB, FX5200) but when I start the DAGGER.EXE a DOS window pops up and tells me I have to insert the correct disk. I also burnt the CD files to a physical CD but it's the same. I only found a solution for this issue on DOSbox but I somehow don't want to use an emulator when I have a PC that can(/should?) run daggerfall out of the box (no pun intended). Can anyone help me?

greetings and merry christmas from germany

I have no idea but there are folks around here who know all about this stuff because they gamed with those rigs back then. Be patient, one of them will show up eventually.

550 MHz .... 256 MB of RAM .... Yikes! :cold:

I've got a Dell laptop with a Mobile Pentium II, 300 MHz. Can't help much with the OP's problem though, because this thing is running Linux.

Although it seems to me that the game is looking for a CD, since the original CD version didn't install everything to the hard disk. I think there's a way of specifying a path to the Arena2 directory, which is where that stuff is installed. I'd suggest a google search on starting Daggerfall without CD.

Do you have z.cfg updated with the correct path to Dagerfall folder on your HD?

Well, I've got a lot of old computer gear here. There are more than a dozen old computers. I think the oldest we still have is a 1984 Laser 128 (an Apple II clone that my wife, a retired schoolteacher, had in her classroom.) I sold most of the really early stuff, like the old https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_PET

I also have an Atari 2600 game console from the late 70s.

That doe seem sort of special to have the ability to run an older game on the rig it was designed for originally. :user:

I did the same thing with my old 486 which runs DOS 6.22 and Win3.11. My burned CD works fine, though. Not sure what your issue could be. Did you install the game from your burned CD? I did have to set up a separate autoexec menu option entirely with unqiue config.sys settings for it to work, though. But that's DOS.

Usually DAGGER.EXE doesn't work with me neither. Running "fall z.cfg" command in command prompt in Daggerfall's directory does the trick. This requires that paths are correctly defined in z.cfg file.
