Daggerfall world size?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:37 pm

I used to play daggerfall back in 95 and just recently played it again and forgot how much I loved the game. I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any other games with such a huge world like daggerfall I loved it cause you literally had 100's of cities, dungeons and graveyards in most of the kingdoms. It also can take you 5-10 min just to get from one side of the city to the other in the major cities. some of the dungeons were so big they could be their own game at times. I really missed all this and wondering why there's not other games (at least that I know about) that have such a huge world to play around in with?

Dwarf Fortress can also have gigantic worlds, completely randomly generated every time you play. And at some point in the future it'll have huge randomly generated cities as well...

That's impressive to say the least. Do you physically travel between Kingdoms or do you teleport to them?

You fast travel.

You can walk between towns but the chances of finding anything is very small.

but where DF shines is in its dungeons, not its pretty world.. OB shines in its pretty world but its dungeons lack. I dont think there is single dungeon I havent got lost in. Its a dungeon crawler's paradise.

You can walk between towns within a Kingdom right? You just can't walk from one Kingdom to another?

You can walk from one Kingdom to another, you can walk wherever you want. It would just take a really long time to walk everywhere manually.

Also, walking between kingdoms tends to cause minor glitches, particularly when you happen across a town. Still, something you should witness at some point in your DF career. Do it somewhere mountainous :D

I remember way back when I first played daggerfall and I knew about the vampires and I knew which type of vampire I wanted to be, so I ran around looking for dungeons and such in their known "territory" looking for vampires/dungeons with vampires. Haha.

Didn't turn out too well.

Actually, Frontier: Elite II has a larger world than Daggerfall. Much, much larger. It contains hundreds of solar systems with real distances between each planet and solar system. If you don't use the "Speed Time" button and fly at the same speed as a 1969 shuttle to get to the Moon from Earth, it'll take you roughly the same time as the shuttle.

Thankfully, in addition to the Speed Time function, you can also fast travel. And it's not all. Every planet can be visited once you get past the cloud level. (You don't just dock in a city, you can fly around parts of the planet)
It's very impressive for a 1993 game.

Doesn't X3: Terran Conflict use a similar system? If so, you might want to look into giving it a shot. It has a huge galaxy map with highly open-ended gameplay.

Nope.
But it has been released as a Shareware and is free to be downloaded.

You'll need DosBox to run it if you don't have a Windows 98 or previous OS computer.

Yes I have it. :)
I recently bought it since it, indeed, looks a lot similar to Frontier. One evening, I'll spend it all trying to learn X3. It's so massive I don't know where to start. I don't know if I want to be a trader or make a "fighter" character, etc. :P

While I personally do not own the game myself, a good friend of mine has it, and ultimately, your view of the game correlates with his. I wish my computer had the specs to be able to play it, as it sounds quite intriguing; almost like an "elder scrolls in space" type of game (speaking purely from the "open-ended" standpoint, of course). You might even say I'm slightly jealous. ;)

If you're looking for ideas, my friend got into the mining industry, and used the profits to slowly build his own fleet.

Indeed. I thought Bethesda themselves once stated that they had a couple of their employees try to go across the whole Daggerfall gameplay landmass, manually. Took them literally two actual weeks to make it from one end to the other.

Propaganda. It only takes about 25 hours.

Is there a lot of stuff to see and do along the way?

There's nothing to see. The landscape is randomly generated and changes only if you change region/climate.

It's all about bumpy hills and plains in most regions. In the mountains, the terrain goes up and down a lot. (and it's dangerous to jump in these areas, as you can take quite a fall)
But there's really nothing to see when you wander outside. It's the same patterns over and over again.
Plus, the world is so huge that the chances you run into a wilderness dungeon or witch coven are very, very, very, very, (Very?) rare.

Hah, let me put it this way: There are about 15,000+ locations in the game. The largest ones fill up a whole map pixel. The game map is 500x1000 pixels. So that means that the game world is 97% wilderness (much of that is ocean, but hey).

So no. Not really :)
