Daggerfall on Xbox Live Arcade, good idea?

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 7:09 pm

I've only got to play Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall a couple times in my youth, never really got to play it very long, but from what I played I swear my body temp rose a couple degrees from the awesomeness of the game, and how vast it really is what with random dungeon generators and the massive distance of the land you can travel along with a near infinite number of weapons. I want to play it again, sadly using something like DOS Box or some other emulator has never worked for me and the game is not functional even though I have the disc.

So, wouldn't it be fricken sweet if Bethesda could somehow bring the game to Live Arcade for download, and then we could all get to play it for it's nearly infinite hours of fun?
I think so, along with many of my friends, because they also can't play the game anymore because they no longer own a running computer from the time the game was IN.
Let me know what you all think. B)

With a little tweaking to the controls, I think it could work.

this is like the 1337th thread about daggerfall or any other game which ain't for a particular console (I also seen a thread about a "revamped" Morrowind with a better combat system and better graphics, but that's not the point). Thing is, Beth lost the source code for Daggerfall, so it's impossible to easily modify it. I have a 1 year old pc with Windows 7 and it can Daggerfall and Arena just fine, so I don't see your point.

It would be much easier for Beth to do nothing. Just dowload the game for the same pc that your posting on.

I would love to play Daggerfall on the console. Aside from it being a hassle to type in paragraphs of code every time I want to start the game (the reason I stopped playing), it would be nice to play it on a controller as well.

My point, is that not everyone that plays Elder Scrolls has a computer to run Daggerfall, and that it would be a worthwhile buy on Live Arcade if it were to be processed and in working order.

You are currently running the game yes? Then my point doesn't apply to you at all since you can play it, therefor you wouldn't be interested in buying the game for download to play on a console when it already runs on your computer. So from your standpoint, I don't see your point in ever adding a comment other than it would be difficult to modify it. It still would make them thousands of sales, and if they could work it out, make a viable re-release of a classic and entertaining game.

Daggerfall was made in 1996. The computer you used to post this thread could run it.

Also, the game is free. Bethesda released Daggerfall and Arena for free on the Elder Scrolls website a few years ago.

And if that computer belongs to the library? Or work? Or a friend? Some people who post in these forums post on computers they do not own. One of my best friends in the Oblivion General forum doesn't own a computer. Yes, you heard right: there are people on planet earth who do not own a computer! Astounding. Truly astounding.

I think this would be a wonderful idea, if it could be made to work. I've never tried to run Daggerfall myself (I have no interest in it, frankly) but from what I've heard it's a royal pain in the neck to get it running on many modern PCs, and even then it may not run smoothly. I don't see a downside to the idea.

Great idea, shame it would never happen.

Your condescending tone is not appreciated. I'm well aware that plenty of people don't own a computer.

I think it's a bad idea. It would take quite a lot of work for it to run on a pc. And to be honest, I doubt all that many people would actually buy it. A few thousand maybe. All that work for so little gain.
It's actually rather simple to get running as long as you follow insttructions very carefully.
And if you don't happen to own a computer, well, obviously you wont be playing Daggerfall. Such is life.

Daggerfall is re-released for free on PCs. While I would certainly buy it if it were available on XBLA, I think they have done enough to get a very old, very buggy and very endearing game to the masses.

I'd love to see it on arcade, even though it would be a huge download haha. It's just too hard to run DOSbox on my x64 PC.
