Daggers should primarily stab, not slash.

Post » Sat Mar 12, 2011 12:14 pm

Did it annoying anyone else in Oblivion how daggers were basically used as tiny swords? Your main attack was just quick little slashes, and the sneak attack was even just a strong slash. Daggers are primarily used as stabbing weapons, as they are fast and produce less torque on the wrist when stabbing than with a sword, so your full strength can be put into the motion repeatadly. For immersions sake and to make assassin type characters feel more believable, daggers would need their own fighting style and animations, ie. quickly getting in close and stabbing, then evading an attack and stabbing again, the only slashing a dagger would be used for is striking at shallow arteries like the jugular or under the arm.

I really hate this misconception that you need a long weapon to slash people with. No, what you need is a blade terminating in a point, just like you do for stabbing.

You can slash somebody with the tip of a pencil if you want to. But, the depth of the cut is limited by the length of the cutting edge, and the fact that there were no stabbing attacks with the dagger in Oblivion was a definite over sight.

I'm pretty sure daggers will be used as stabbing weapons in Skyrim. In the gameplay trailer, you can clearly see an assassin taking down his mark in a tavern with a dagger and the motion seems to be a stabbing one, rather than a slashing one.

I think he was just quickly moving to slit his throat. I hope there are more assassination techniques that become available with skill. A stab to the base of the skull, severing the spine is much more efficient than slitting the throat.

I'm pretty sure that was one of the finishing moves they're adding in Skyrim, and not a regular animation.

I'd just like to point out that daggers can be and always have been used as slashing weapons, and not just to go all Stabbity McStabface. There are several perfectly valid reasons to slash instead of stab with a dagger or short blade, including but not limited to requiring less accuracy, for parrying attacks, and for causing nice, wide, painful gashes to the rich-in-nerve-ending outer layers of the skin.

Yes, but there was no stabbing in Oblivion, except for the backwards power attack, which wouldnt even work because dagger had such short reach. Causing minor cuts would simply piss off hardened warriors.

I doubt it tbh, if they were to add a stabbing motion spears would be open to be in game... yeah spears again.
Sorry I could not make this point without an example such as that forbidden topic.

So I honestly think for gameplay, swipes, slashes and swings are what we'll get.

In my opinion they should just make small weapons a completly different skill altogether, like in Morrowind, with higher crit multipliers.

Wish they'd add in some of those neck-slitting moves talked about in a book from Morrowind (which I of course forget the name of). Y'know, the "violinist" and such?

I have no concerns about this. Stabbing it looked like in the trailer.

I expect on the whole, daggers will still use the same animations as swords. However I would expect a different range of finishing moves, many of which would involve stabbing.

It would be a nice feature. Also a nice feature if swords actually "sliced", like swords instead of "hacking", like axes.

Minor point : is it just me, or does the Elven Dagger in OB look like it was designed to be primarily a slashing weapon?

Yes and the short sword, before I modded the game I liked them for a Khajiit nomad build that only used single edged blades.

Are you facepalming me for not knowing, or Oblivion for making a game where only "masters" know how to stab with a stabbing implement?
