DaggerXL - the continuation II

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:30 pm

The previous thread was locked due to reaching 200+ posts, which you can see http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1017314

As I mentioned in the second to last post, a new http://daggerxl.wordpress.com has been put up which talks about the delays and stuff I've been working on for DaggerXL.
As usual, any comments are welcome. :)

If you're unfamiliar with the project you can read the http://daggerxl.wordpress.com/about, http://daggerxl.wordpress.com, visit the http://daggerxl.50.forumer.com and try out the http://daggerxl.wordpress.com/downloads You can also see screenshots, watch gameplay movies and look at the project roadmap on the blog.

So, DaggerXL is to make it easier for people to mod, right? I have a question if so: How hard would it be to add extra races? I started with Morrowind(although I hated the combat) and I was wondering, under DaggerXL, how hard would it be to add in my favorite race, the orcs, as a playable race?

It should be possible to add new races at some point. Fully moddability will come down the road though, I want to get the core game finished first. Though simpler things will be moddable earlier, such as textures.

I hope you realize that what you are doing now can change the course of what Daggerfall is. To all of us old and new, who love Daggerfall for what it truely is, we are satisfied with the game the way it is right now, but if you were to finish your amazing project, and actually pull this off. Daggerfall could be such a beautiful game, more so than morrowind. With higher resolution and better textures over the whole world and all the dungeons, hell I'd never stop playing.

Thankyou so much for all your hard work, it's much appreciated. :foodndrink:

all i have to say is this: FINISH IT.

dont do like the others have done and just disappear and then suddenly show up after some year or two and tell us that you tired of it/is going on a 8 year long around the world trip/"grown up" and dont like computers anymore/bought a PS3 instead or whatever.

and dont go the Tamriel Rebuilt way either and mod on it for 30+ years.

i am having hopes for this one, and i hope i wont be let down (again). :goodjob:

I agree, I joined them forever ago to learn more about modding and eventually help them finish it. But I haven't even finished modding my own game yet so... I can partially be blamed for not getting off my *ss and doing more to help. :sadvaultboy:

But who knows what will happen to me in the mean time - I could die!

HahhahahaAHAHAahaah!!!

Ayways, Yeah! My support goes out to you luciusDXL, if I wasn't already a lazy member of TR I'd love to help DaggerXL out. :)

EDIT:*

I thought I should also leave some feedback on your progress.
Umm, I really like that about every month you crunch out a massive update. This is an incredible rate of progress, good job. To your most recent improvements, I really like that you managed to smooth out the textures, I'd rather them look a little fuzzy than be really pixelated. Congrats on getting the map done too, I think you did a wonderful job with the terrain. I haven't used your demo yet but the screenshots look wonderful. :goodjob:

I haven't checked in over here in a while, sorry guys. I've been busy getting ready for the holidays and with work so not much done with DaggerXL this month. However once the holidays are over then work will continue as it did before. Fortunately I've already "grown up" so that wouldn't be a very good excuse for me... I don't plan on letting the project die, though there may be delays when the dreaded "real life" thing gets in the way. :(

*puts tinsel on the thread* Happy holidays! Delays happen - heck, I've been working on a mod for over two years (never mind that I've scrapped everything at least twice to make way for improvements), so I know how it can be when other things take up your time - don't feel guilty or anything about it. :) There are some days when I can't bring myself to work on my project, 'cause I'd rather play a video game or hang out with my dogs or watch television. I'm glad you won't let the project die; I am really thrilled for it. :D I shall whet my appetite with the Daggerfall Chronicles, which should be coming in the mail soon...

I haven't downloaded DaggerXL yet, but I've been following development for a while now. I'll download when the game when it gets closer to completion but in the meanwhile I'll continue to check in on the project every few weeks. It looks like you've been doing a great job so far. I can't wait to play this masterpiece!

Improve? I wish the combat was like that in all the Elder Scrolls games. It's the most realistic and fun way to fight. It's not an issue of 'improving' - it's already great.

I'm curious to know what kind of combat system you'd like.
The system in MW was HORRIBLE. Click click click click click click ^ 7

It's either click click click, or keystroke keystroke keystroke (or button-mash button-mash button-mash if you use a gamepad). Either way, you're going to be using your finger. I'm not sure how an automatic/continuous attack would work, but I suppose it could be possible (like in Titan Quest).

I like the gesture-based combat in Daggerfall. The only frustrating part is it interferes with mouselook, which would be a bigger issue in a more modern engine. The bow combat in Daggerfall isn't too great. Oblivion did a great job of that part.

Morrowind's combat is annoying because not only do you just click on things, but that doesn't even determine your accuracy. Oblivion did a better job of that, especially with one of those advanced combat mods that adds more options (backstab kills, shield bashing, power attacks to dismember, etc).

The gestures in Daggerfall give a lot of control over what attack you use. For people who don't like gestures I could see using different modifier buttons, but I suspect it would only work on a gamepad setup with a lot of accessible buttons. On a keyboard it would be hard because you have so much going on with your other hand to control movement.

The latest DarkXL build has been released, when some real life issues subside in a day or two I'll get to work on the DaggerXL build full steam. There's not too much left to do before release.

A small update on Lucius' status.

Things have been a little bit slow lately but the project will move along quickly here shortly. Check the http://daggerxl.50.forumer.com/index.php?noportal=1 for more information. StoneFrog, DigitalMonk and I have continued our work on the DaggerXL Texture Project. We are still limited in what we can do but there has already been vast improvements, please check out the DaggerXL Texture Project thread in the DaggerXL Mods section to see some new screenshots.
