What we know is that there is a story implying that there is/are/were spirits known as Leaper Demons who ran about saving bits of the Mundus from the devouring jaws of Alduin at the end of each cycle of existence, so that hopefully they could store enough away eventually that Alduin would not be able to finish his meal and the cycle would be broken. They had a king - the Leaper Demon King - and a bargain with someone known as the Greedy Man, who helped (instigated) their endeavors. The story goes that Alduin eventually caught on to their scheme and cursed the Leaper Demon King out of his true self, renamed him Dagon, and doomed him to destroy all the bits of the world that he had stored away.
Thus comes Mehrunes Dagon, Daedra of destruction and natural disasters. Or so we think; there are holes.

Incidentally, peeps, what do you think the significance is in that Dagon begged Alduin 100,008 times not to curse him? Why that number? It just struck me, 'cause it was 1008 *years* in the dragon break, ya? Maybe I'm just seeing things here, but the similarity strikes me as curious.
