Is Dagoth Ur really evil?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:31 am

Forgive me if this topic has been done to death, i'm sure it has.May be fun.

Now as i understand it, Dagoth wanted to cast down the Tribunal and kick all the outlanders from Morrowind, correct yes?
I honestly don't think this is evil, at all.

Do you think him evil?

Sorry if the poll isn't done correctly.

Evil is a point of view, and people whom others perceive as being evil rarely if ever see themselves in that light.

Voryn Dagoth Ur saw himself as a hero of the Dunmer and their ancient culture, and wanted to drive out what he saw as the dangerous and evil Imperial forces, and to spread his divine "gift", Corprus, to his chosen people. In that light, his goodness or evilness is ambiguous, and depends greatly on one's own point of view and religious or political allegiences.

Corprus is where you turn into a Zombie like brute with superhuman strength right?Where you go practically mindless?

Wouldn't want to unwrap that at christmas.

I'm gonna go and get a bit further in bloody palace, won't be too long i'm sure.20 minutes at most.

No..if you reject his invitation, it does that to you.

If you accept yourself as a friend and member of House Dagoth, you progress through levels to Ascended Sleeper, and become an immensely powerful but deformed sorceror.

Like I said, it depends. He was bad for the Empire and for House Hlaluu and Dres's new progressive culture in Morrowind.

Is Dagoth Ur evil? Another question that will have a similar answer. Is God Real?

He was misunderstood. Just like other genious people of that time.

And he was betrayed too, that plus the fact that he resided close to the heart of Lorkhan for a rather long time could drive anyone out of their mind.

You mean Akatosh? He did sorta appear and kick Mehrunes Dagon's behind. But he's only considered God in the Nine Divines church, and only the most powerful one out of eight or nine at that.

If you refer to the Abrahamic god YWEH/Jehovah, well, he doesn't appear at all in Elder Scrolls mythology, and this board isn't really for real world religious discussion.

Nah it's alright. Sometimes threads go for days without replies. We all have different schedules and live in different timezones. For instance, in fifteen minutes I'm going to work for eight hours, and won't be posting at all for another ten or so.

I was making a comparison in that statement. The game question of Dagoth Ur-good/evil is like the real world question of is god real. Both are dependent on people's views and opinions, and will never be fully answered to evryone's satisfaction.

I can only say that from his own point of view, he was a servant of the greater Good, but for the Empire and many others, he was considered Evil.

The Ashlanders named him Sharmat, or Devil, so that should give you an idea.

I won't call him really evil, i'd just say his brain isn't working properly anymore.

I consider him an anti-hero. He pretty much wanted exactly what Nerevar wanted(no to outlanders) minus the deformities.

he is evil. He was a betrayer, sent out the blight. Plus I'm with and for the empire so that means something too.

He's evil, IMO.

You can think the moon's made of cheese, that doesn't make it cheese.

Similarly, you can think yourself the Hero, but when you go turning people into twisted beasts that are identical (amongst a class, that is, all Ash ghouls look alike) and rob them of their free will, their individuality, and leave only enough that they look as though they're individuals, that Dagoth Gares and Dagoth Odros are separated by things other than their strength and "rank" in the Sixth House.

They're not, really. None of Ur's minions had wills of their own, he controlled them all like puppets, hell, he may have been a puppet himself. There's no telling what establishing a connection like his to the Heart of a God who's "dead" but not really dead will do to you.

He's evil, yes. Misguided attempts at good easily become evil.

His goals are somewhat good (free his people an such), but his methods for achieving them are far down on the dark side - sneaking into people's dreams to warp their mind, spread corprus to warp heir bodies, make an encore of the dwemer's sin; planning an orgy of bloodeshed to remove all that doesn't fint unde his boot, none of this can be called good by any stretch of imagination.

Goodness isn't only in your goals, but also in the path you're using to reach them.

Good and evil are relative, yeah yeah.

He's a tragic figure, yeah yeah.

He was twisting and perverting people's minds and bodies against their will, mass-genocide. He was bent on creating a continent of hive-minded drones.

He was evil.

"Evil is simply the absense of good just as darkness is simply the absense of light."

So with that, what GOOD did he want to do? If there is nothing good then he was evil.

All he wanted to do was to create a beautiful world full of happy dreaming and music, what's wrong with that...

Speaking on behalf of ash ghouls everywhere, Lord Dagoth is a liberating hero. He may have worked against the will of our former selves - we were wrong as you are wrong - but his work is for the good of all. Just as unliving things fear the sun, so do you soft-fleshed shadows fear the searing glory of Dagoth Ur.

Evil in his objective... not really IMO.

Good in his objective... not really IMO.

More or less deranged or insane, he has a goal to recreate a Pseudo-Nerevar-esque hierarchy in Morrowind, but his mind has been so dilluted any good he hoped to achieve has long since faded from his mind.

I am more sympathetic for Voryn then most are however.

This is true, but evil can also be a perversion of good.

Dagoth Ur wanted to reclaim Morrowind for the Dunmer. There is at least an arguable good in that, not an absence of good. The insane way he went about it veered from good into something evil, so far as good and evil can be said to exist in the alien sensibility of Morrowind.
