Dai Katana

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 5:23 am

Guys,

Where can my character get an unenchanted dai-katana in game if he does not do the Main Quest? And he's not stealing it either. At least I don't want him to. We'll see.

Dunno the only place I can think of is the Sky Haven Temple and that's about it. Maybe in some ruin near Bruma or something? I don't know.

I can only think of Cloud Ruler Temple for an unenchanted one. I believe Jensine in the IC market district sells an enchanted one?
Also check in Castle Bruma. It may be labelled as 'stealing', but with all of her Akaviri artifacts there may well be a Dai-Katana there.

There are some in the Temple of the Ancestor Moths. If you are not doing the associated TG quest, there may be some concerns. I'll let you read about it here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Temple_of_the_Ancestor_Moths_%28place%29#Zone_1:_Ancestor_Moth_Crypt

Spoiler
Well if he does not do the TG quest he will have nothing to worry about!

I'm gona quickly test what happens, Berret is on his way to the Temple without starting the TG or MQ.

Update on how it went....

Spoiler
, well I'm on the ps3, Berret made his way to the temple, well Crypt, since I broke all the picks trying to open the door, i went to the little home and killed the guys and got the keys, if your character is low level make sure to bump the difficulty all the way to the left, and just storm in and kill the guys(they will attack you anyway) until you get someone with the katana, the guy that had one in my game was in the first floor of the crypt! The TG quest did not start at all.

Thanks all for your replies, and thanks KP for testing! Holy cow, the temple looks a little daunting for a level 5 character. It's been so long since a thief character came here. The only thing is... he just got out of jail, and he's no murderer. Will have to back burner this for a while and see if the character comes to a decision.

You can get the Dai-Katana at Temple of the Moths without stealing or murder, or changing any of your stats. Baa just did it.

Spoiler

First she made a Game Save. Next she selected two of her best
fighter companions, which turned out to not be needed. Went to Temple of the
Moths and left the two companions in the Chapel for use later if necessary. Note
none of the doors are red, but all are locked. Baa entered the Ancestor Moth
Crypt and ran into a monk. He didn’t seem to mind Baa being there, so she
attempted to pickpocket him, but didn’t take anything. He raised the alarm but
nothing happened. Baa unlocked the next door (Moth Halls) and found more monks.
They didn’t seem to mind her being there either. She tried to pickpocket a monk,
not taking anything again. Nothing happened. She found several more monks
farther on and after several tries, they attacked Baa. There were four and Baa
killed them all. I think only one was armed. The other three were using their
fist. One had a Dai-Katana, which Baa picked up and left. Baa checked her stats
and there was no change on anything - no murders, no bounty, no trespass, no
theft. She retrieved the two companions and fast traveled to Skingrad and talked
to a guard, then to the IC and talked to several more guards - nothing unusual
happened.

Can't figure out how to post a spoiler
Type your spoiler, highlight it, click the 'Special BB Code' button, select Spoiler from the BBCode drop-down box and then click 'OK'. It will look something like this:

Can't figure out how to post a spoiler, so I will just say,

Well, looking in the Construction Set, it appears there is no way to get one without stealing it or doing the MQ or TG quests. Only Order of Talos & Blind Moth priests and Blades have them. The only places that carry unenchanted ones are Cloud Ruler Temple and the Akaviri collection in Bruma.

We are venturing north to the area where we have heard this temple to be located. Got waylaid by some goblins in the middle of what appears to be a war of sorts, and had to detour, quickly I might add, as three melee attackers appears to be more than we can handle. In Ha got away by jumping in the river, a bit embarrassed that he didn't face it head-on, but he's alive.

Thanks again all, for your help.

Did you have to do a TG quest to get it or murder one of the priests for it? And what does 150-24-11-96 stand for?

The numbers are the item’s value, weight, damage and repair as shown in the pic of Baa’s inventory. None of my characters have ever been in the TG. Read the Spoiler in my previous post #8 on this thread to see how it was done. I think that may answer all your questions. If your sneek skill is high enough, you probably could just pickpocket it. Doing it the way Baa did may mess up the TG quest line - don’t know about that.

Pickpocketing is funny. You can only pickpocket items that are loose or 'unequipped' in a target's inventory. If your target has an item 'equipped' it will not show up when you go to pickpocket them.

Of course an NPC will 'unequip' a broken weapon (and usually drop it) so some very clever disintegrate weapon work could maybe work and allow you to get such a blade without killing its owner.

As cool as a Dai Katana looks, it's a shame that it only has the reach of a one handed weapon rather than a claymore. No idea why the devs did that but the two handed Dai Katana has the same speed and reach as a long sword.

I'm wondering if maybe that's one of the few things they've done right. (Edit: I didn't say that quite how I meant it. I mean with regard to weapon reach.) A dai-katana is really a "normal" sword with just a handle long enough to be used two-handed. I can't think of a reason, other than blade length, that would make a two handed sword have a longer reach than a one-handed one.

Further Edit: I did a little digging, and I wonder if Bethesda was thinking of a Nodachi with their "dai-katana." It was a long Japanese sword, longer than a claymore, worn on the back, and used on horseback. If so, they should have let us use it while mounted! ;)

yeah, nodachi, it have been a long time not hearing that word. lols 500 koku to make nodachi troop in Shogun Total War.

There are various types of katana, nodachi is one of it, but i like dotanuki better. It is broader and bigger than a normal katana. usually only shogun executioners using it. it i said that dotanuki can cut of/break other katanas.

Nodachi is oversized, compared to normal sized of Japanese people.

There was a Morrowind mod that changed the name of 'Dai-katana' to 'Nodachi.' I've never thought about it before but I'm guessing that must have been why they did it. I bet there's an Oblivion mod somewhere that does the same thing.
