Dairy Queen - What's with less flavors?

Post » Wed Feb 03, 2016 4:33 pm

So... I don't know if anybody else noticed this or not but what's with Dairy Queen removing their flavors as time progresses? I remember back in the day when I was a young lad, Dairy Queen (at least here in Ohio) had a rather big list of flavors that can be asked for, even including Superman flavor. Ya know? Blue Moon, Raspberry, and a lot of other flavors. DQ was the place I had most of these flavors of milkshakes and fulfilled my huge list (For the record, I've tried over 60+ flavors of milkshakes)

But over the years, DQ has been removing these flavors from list and stripping them down slowly to a very small amount. Just today, I was going to order a Mint (like I do, due to lack of Blue Moon for the past couple of years) and they said that they don't have Mint anymore... Wth? Just last year, I had a Mint shake from DQ in November! That was like 3 months ago... DQ also never has done "holiday special" bullcrap too, like other places would do, because ice cream is suppose to be their specialty. I've finally decided to just put DQ on my dislike list because this is stupid... At this rate, they'll remove the banana flavor in 2017...

Anyways, has anybody else noticed this or not? Plus, what the heck, does anybody here enjoy DQ or prefer other ice cream specialty places?

If flavours don't sell, I imagine they get removed from the menu.

But if you live in a city, there's likely a local burger joint that has milkshakes in more variety and they probably taste way better than what DQ offers.

I know in my city there's a cool place that has crazy flavours, and you can even combo them.

You want a licorice & banana milkshake? Or how about maple & graqe!? :P

Never noticed. I only get two shakes from them (or anything like them). Chocolate Malt and Banana. Those aren't going anywhere so if they 86'd a bunch of slow sellers it would go right past me.

I haven't been to DQ in years.. if I want a milkshake, I usually grab one from a locally owned place about a 20 minute walk from here..

as weird as that sounds, i'd probably try it :P

Hmm, Dairy Queen was the place my parents took me too all the time when I was a kid when we went out for a special dessert, and I don't ever recall any of those milkshake flavors. And having been going to the same DQ as then, their board looks fairly identical to what I recall as a kid. There are even a few flavors you can order that aren't on the menu. Maybe it's just your area?

Wow, DQ left my city years ago. Surprised they are still in business.

As long as they keep the Oreo flavored Blizzard, I'm content.

Well this makes me glad I don't have a sweet tooth. I literally only ever eat ice cream if my throat is hurting due to some type of sickness. Anyways... I think there's probably just a recurring trend with businesses in general- food businesses being no exception, where they stop producing certain products if they think they don't make enough money due to not having enough popularity. I think I remember there was something at Tacobell they used to make that my mother liked a lot, but then they just stopped producing that specific thing.

So if you go to a store, or a restaurant or fast food place, it's always possible your favorite thing could possibly go out of sale, possibly due to you having unusual tastes compared to most customers, or for all I know maybe even a possible issue with resource scarcity, those two things would be my guesses.

This. Sorry to hear the OP though having their favorites go away.

This is when you need to rely on the local ice cream joint. For us, we have Brusters. A privately owned 4 or 5 store chain that makes all their own flavors, menu changes daily, roughly 20-30 selections. All the usuals but also A LOT of custom flavors.

They didn't have any near me until fairly recently. The menu for ice cream did seem a bit more... sparce to me, though, but I thought I was mistaken. I went there this last December 15th.

My favorite blizzard as a kid was the pop rocks one.

less flavors? mostly due to the health department. back in the 70's-90's it was fine to have old stale candy, syrups, nuts to throw into a milkshake. nowadays that won't fly with social media and stricter codes.

anyways with most dairy queens, the main menu is the same as it's been for decades, but depending on region can have extra fluff added to the menu for variety.

It depends on the location I think. When I was a kid, the dq by my house only had like 3 flavours, while one across the city had like 3x as many flavours.

That, and I think dq isn't doing as good as they used to, financially. they're at the stage of kfc, pizza hut and a&w. Used to be some of my favourite places to go, and now they're all gone downhill, food is sub par, service seems to be sub par. While McDonald's consistently gets better over time and keeps updating in comparison.

I think the problem is lots of these fast food places are trying to keep the status quo, and slowing killing themselves while doing it.

5 to 10 years ago I'd never imagined I'd like McDonald's more than I do a&w, which used to be my favourite. Same with dq, I think the only thing keeping them alive is the blizzard, and McDonald's mcflurry is almost as good at this point.

I only go to dq for milkshakes, chicken strips (which are still the best for fast food) and the occasional blizzard.

But I've also started to develop lactose intolerance over the years because of all the dairy I used to have, when I have a blizzard I'm on the toilet not long afterwards haha.

Try Sonics for their flavor stuff.

My brother usually gets a banana split shake

There is a local ice cream joint we go to too. It's just more expensive. Plus, there's my situation issue. Since I don't drive (due to phobia), I'm usually stuck with going along with my sister or someone else, and the thing is... Most of the time, they want a specific blizzard from DQ rather than a milkshake or ice cream. So go there and I have to get a milkshake there or get none at all. (I honestly don't care for ice cream much at all. But I love milkshakes to death, as the saying goes). Usually at DQ, I get mint now-a-days... And well, explained what happened there. Ha-ha.

But yes, there is a nice joint. It even allow mixtures (mixing Blue Moon and Strawberry gotta be my favorite so far).

I think Arby's has a mint shake right now.... :ermm: (I love mint, but I don't do icecream/shakes in winter. It's already cold enough.)

re:DQ.... I think I've been to one, once. When I was a kid, it was all Carvel & Friendlies. Or Jersey Freeze, the local place. Didn't even have a DQ.

You're not the first person I've heard in recent months to say this about McDonalds and I actually find it surprising. I really stopped eating their food for close to a decade with the maybe rare occasion, once a year in a pinch situation (either time, location, money, or a combination).

I actually stopped at a McDonalds twice in the past 3 months, the same one. The reason being is that my credit union is pretty far away from me (because I have moved a couple times) and now it takes me 20 minutes to get there from my work, so I go on my lunch. In the same shopping center is a McDonalds. I was pleasantly surprised with the food. It wasn't as greasy as it used to be, but the quality of the meat at least seemed to be the same save for this fact.

I never tried their McFlurry. Mainly because I saw what the machine innards ooks like when it gets cleaned every night, and it's pretty damn disgusting. Then again, this was early 2000's before the stricter food laws and the exposing of McDonalds from various outlets (and one eye opening documentary). Just wish the workers there were treated better.

I find it funny many saying they never seen a dairy queen, though looking at the us map, it's a little plausible in a few regions:

I guess as I been mostly in the northern Midwest area, that's the reason I see them in almost every town above 3000 people haha.

I miss dairy in general.

Had my gallbladder out. Dairy outside a few exceptions (usually fresh whipped cream and a few hard aged cheeses) has me in the throne with the most painful gas ever.
