Daleks?

Any chance of using the bronzed look of the current show?

It's certainly possible but right now I'm going with perfecting a dalek saucer commander look. I figure if I'm going to go for the bronzed modern 'rebel dalek' look I should really make the full modern dalek shape. The modern dalek has different lights/shoulders/skirts, a modified dome/scope/sensors/gun and whilst I agree it's pretty sharp looking I'm going to go for this for now and maybe branch out.

(More or less) finished the texturing. http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/7624/dalekxr0.jpg Textured, accuracy improved... I love my dalek. The mesh around the 'shoulders' is hard to make out in this render because it's very fine detail that's hard to make out until closer up. That'll give the AF a challenge I guess.

I had no idea. That or I simply didnt notice.
So we're doing this texture? http://www.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/extra/dalek/daleks/movie6.php

Glad that you did not do the modified arm.

An 'updated' version of that that was closer to the TV series one used in the B&W series early on. They were short on props so they roped it in and I rather liked the result. (Hence the different slats and eye.) I need to work on the plastic effect a little but I'm sure once I'm sure once it's tweaked a little and under that bloom filter it'll start to add up. You've probably noticed already I'm making major quality/accuracy tweaks every time I look at it.

As you can see there's not a single part that hasn't been replaced at least once and this will be an ongoing drive for quality for the time being. This what I meant when I said you really can't get away with a sloppy Dalek model, and yes, I am slightly obsessive but this project has proved very rewarding thus far and I'm enjoying where it's going.

Next on my list is the plunger and detailing the dome lights having modified the dome, textures and gun. It's too thin and looks slightly papery the way I see it.

Another face to join the party, I've been working on this 'special weapons dalek', a dalek model that appeared exclusively for five minutes in an episode in season 26 for a few hours. Note that if this is included in a mod, it will likely be dead. My plans for the 'if' this moves to a mod phase only allow for 1 living dalek, (any more would be nightmarishly stupidly hard to kill) let alone a dalek this powerful. Got to add the gun and a few bolts yet but it was surprisingly easy to work on.

Also, here's a little update on the main dalek.

Daleks are more complicated than people are giving them credit for. Their mid-section can rotate around as can their heads. Making them behave realistically would be quite a challenge as they don't behave anything like anything currently in the game.

It would be great if done right though; imagine sneaking up on a Dalek only to be detected at the last moment. Its head and mid-section immediately spin around to face you, "EXTERMINATE!" and you're dead.

As you can see here that's entirely possible with this model if it can actually be rigged to work as such. I suspect there's a way but don't quote me on that.

(Also, enjoy some closeups on some detailing that doesn't entirely show through the renders, some red dalek fixes and the more or less now completed 'Special Weapons Dalek', which will be a very interesting texturing job.)

I was thinking that if it comes down to of maybe giving it a crash site... or *the* crash site and making a quest similar to S27's Dalek where you can help it only to have it go... well... dalek on you and the wastes. An enemy almost immune to bullets and totally unphased by energy weapons, killable only by exceptionally lucky sustained fire on the eyepiece or huge use of explosives would certainly be a memorable encounter. Sure, the 'bullet melting' ability of a dalek is a post Mccoy addition but even in their last old school outing they were basically totally unphased by human firearms.

Another story line that might be quite intresting to persue would be to have the darleks chained up/inactive/imprisoned in a locked, sealed cell in the citadel. the idea being of course that the united states government found and imprisoned them in the pentagon before the 'great war' and they've simply layen their rusting for a while.

Obviosly the brotherhoodof steel can't know about them, perhaps the player would have to stumble onto them, kind of like an easter egg?

And the reaosns for them eing imprisoned? it seems before the war technology was MUCH more advanced than the technology on earth during dotor who, perhaps before alot of knowledge was lost in the great war we had weapons capable of incapacitating even a darlek?

One of the amazing things about all this is the FO3 World could easily be an alternatedimensional version of earth, much like the one Rose fled to in doctor who, only, well different of course.

I'm inclined to disagree really, it's a good idea but it'd put it too close to the Dalek episode and would require me to actually make an entire base. You do raise a good point though, the technology plays a part in my current idea as is. I was thinking of the following:

A dalek ship crashes to earth either from being caught up in a nuclear blast, because it was shot down by another alien force or because of an equipment failure. Something along those lines. The dalek saucer is buried in the wastes in DC. The daleks onboard are a grunt or two, a special weapons dalek and a dalek commander, the red dalek. Of course, the SWD is a 'freak' dalek, according to canon it's mad and unpredictable so it may even have caused the crash, and killed one of its companions seriously damaging the other. The player character finds them in the wreck of the ship that punctured a hole through to the subway system where the red dalek tricks PC in to assisting it regain functionality through obtaining technology/power cells/etc. Once freed the dalek of course... goes dalek and starts to destroy everything. Now it's something that it'd be nigh-on impossible to stop on your own so you enlist the help of a technology specialist/scientist, admitting your foolishness. Now where the technology comes in is chosing, once sufficiently armed, to be assisted by a faction in your destruction of the daleks, (Renegade BOS for example) and risk giving them massively advanced technology that could make them unstoppable, or to go it alone. Sort of a classic Fallout end-of-game consequences style choice.

My ideas are more specific and detailed than this but if I do make that mod I'm determined not to give too much away.

Of course, taking down the dalek is the *really* fun part, because as has been discussed only an entire army firing at the eyepiece or a very sizable explosive charge can take one out and that's if you can even get close.

Anyway, after some massive revisions with the help of some true dalek specialists I've managed to refine the design immensely: http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/5001/dalekdk4.jpg

This sounds like great fun. I remember ages back a mod idea to get them into Morrowind, but they seem so much more at home in Fallout.

Only one thing I'd suggest. If the PC has to enlist the help of a 'technology specialist' why not make it...well...the Brotherhood of Steel's 'scientific advisor', if you get what I mean...

I admit that even if my own work does make Fallout 3 it'll likely never grace Oblivion. One reason is that it just doesn't fit on any level, another that I really just didn't care for Oblivion much. Morrowind was interesting and Fallout 2 had always captivated my attention and gaming hours but Oblivion... I never liked, it seemed like a messy tech demo and I don't play it anymore.

If someone with a good track record in modding and justification/story for it I'd likely consent but honestly I can't see anyone persuading me. That said let's focus on the dalek and FO3 right now.

Eh, it seems out of place in Oblivion. Oblivion is purely fantasy; so having a Sci-fi element would be jarring to me. However they seem perfect for Fallout, which takes place in the "real world" (alternate universes aside) and has a strong Sic-fi theme, and even though they are creations of 60's Scifi, or maybe because of it, their look would fit right in as technologically advanced Aliens.
