Damn you restartitus!

To all of you who share or shared in my dilemma, you know the pains of it. Constantly making things up to your friends about how "A witch used a permanent spell on me that dropped my level back to 1" just to hide the embarrassment you would face for making, yet another new character. Well I'm tired of it. I'm sick of not being able to play the game, because every hour I'm making a new character!

So i ask you, how did you overcome this disease?

I think (nay, hope) I have overcome it thanks to http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=33191 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21409.
They suit the character I wanted to play for a while, and have made RPing easier for me, as I don't have acces to the console  and can't pay myself for making up jobs. I think thinking about the character first helps, and then getting a few mods to make it better and more immersive.

Making a new character every hour? That does sound serious! lol

Why do you do this? Are you dissatisfied with your previous character? Or do you simply get the urge to try something else, like a dffferent race or playstyle?

?

assuming u r meaning how i found that character that suited my playstyle and made me enjoy the game... wasnt hard at all. the character i love most is more or les a mix betweenmy very first character and my 4th (oh and mind u, i never even heard of mods until about a month ago).

but it did require trying out different ideas and some research.

EDIT: what probably made it a lot easier for me was that i was not in search of a 'perfect build'. i used that approach 2x, had pen and paper to track every single skill progress... and saw it was no fun at all, so i just let thing s go. much better and lively, in my experience.

I just finally found what worked for me. I created a character with a decent ability to do anything in the game (1 major from each attribute). Strong racial powers (Resist Magic + Bezerker Rage) and in my opinion the best birth sign, (Atronach).

I had to find a way to be unique, versatile, and be godlike in the end game. It took some doing but I found my character after about 2 years.

I'm gonna go against the tide a little bit here, and suggest that "restartitis" is not a sign of a bad thing at all! The starting process -- the building of a new character, and that character's "birth" into the world -- is the most creative part of the game. It's when we're most free to create.

The problem, as I see it, is that once that new character is "born," it's into the same old world as before. We take that "new" character and do the same "old" things that we did with the last character: Go talk to this person. Go get that item. Go into that dungeon. Kill that guy.

So the "new" character quickly turns into the "old" character.

The problem is that our "new" character doesn't have any new ideas of his/her own. No plan.

What would happen if that new character had a very specific "problem," and a very specific set of destinations, that was more important to the character than what the game throws at you? Now you've got something new to do, which only that particular character can do.

OP, read the last post, specially the last paragraph. it pretty much synthesises what the life of a character truly is.

This is exactly what I was doing, I was making new characters every other day/week, with the intention of having a good roleplaying character. I've had my uber character for sometime now, but I've always wanted to try something different, but I never could, as I still went to the Arena for my money and so on, so forth. I was getting bored so easily.
Mods helped me with this very much.
But since you are on Xbox, just try and make a character thats different... take Acadian's famed character - Buffy - as an example, Buffy only does certain things, depending on how it will affect her morale. I would try shape my character after something like that if I were you, only do certain quests, have an encumberance limit, only touch certain items, it makes the game much more challenging, but far more enjoyable.

Maybe I should stop trying to do missions right off the bat, and instead actually be my character for a while. Kill random people because as an Argonian, the humans killed my family. So i trained in the art of stealth combat to slowly bring the Imperial city, and rest of the human race, down.

I just typed all of that without thinking about it and now, I think you just helped me solve my problem! I'm going to be that guy, the Argonian seeking vengeance for his lost loved ones. What should I name him?

I picture you as a strong, large, handsome Orc in real life. With a chiseled jaw, and wearing a suit too.

Arlian Darvarus sounds good - this site might have some more fitting names perhaps?

2-3 years ago, I restarted about 3 times before I stuck it out for the MQ,and skipped most of the Dungeons and Ruins, but did some Faction quests.

This time, I am tried to play "most" of the game.

-Printed a cheat sheet of recommended skills for character to do any quest in the game
-Followed the Wiki with "recommended quests to do early"
-Postponing MQ (no gates)
-No OOO / make it harder mods, in fact, moved slider to easiest
but
am exploring all dungeons/ruins, skipping nothing, and preferring not to fast travel too much...

Choose not to use Open Cities (too much framerate hit) but the Unique landscapes make exploring the countryside fun!

It's hard work but I'm about 50% through after a couple of weeks of late nights...

It has been decided!

Name: Ram-Zabur
Race: Argonian
Hobby: Murder
Reason: To avenge the lost loved ones taken by the Imperial Army, and to rid the world of Humans.

I figure I can explore the world until I find a nice place to call home, then kill the people that already do that :D. After a while start moving towards the smaller cities (Probably Bruma) and begin choosing targets that suit me.

After a while of that I might work on my spells that would be useful in my attempts at unraveling the minds of the humans, such as:
Fenzy ("Lisa hunny where have you been I've been looking all over for y-LISA WHY ARE YOU STABBING ME?!)
Invisibility (hit and run), Or is chameleon better for stabbing people without getting caught?
Command Humanoid perhaps?
Telekineses (Stealing is fun!)
Although i'm not sure how to go about getting these spells as I've never had to.

Any recommendations on Ram-Zabur's actions, i.e. Who to kill, what to steal, anything else really.

1) chameleon can be achieved for 100% thru magic or item enchantment and is better than invisibility.

2) Who to kill:

in any of these styles:

3) Steal everything u can

I see how it could get boring quickly if that was all I did. Maybe I'll do that for a little fun here and there or just until I get those spells, After a while maybe I'll start trying to take them down from the inside by joining some of the guilds, get better stuff so on. Who knows where it could lead.

If one of my characters were plotting murder, you can be sure that it would be very involved. There would be a good deal of stalking first, and the character would work out a particularly evil way of doing the deed. There would be a complete story (in my mind, anyway) of why the character wanted to do this, and that story might be even more complicated than the character knew. (Such as, maybe, that the character's reason for wanting vengeance was based upon a lie that was told by another person.)

Then there would be the issue of the consequences. Would my character go to prison if apprehended, or would he resist arrest and go on the run?

And then, if he went to prison, and he happened to find himself in a certain cell, on a certain day, when the emperor was attempting to escape an assassination attempt... And if he should happen to discover the truth, that he had killed an innocent person, and that the person whose fault it was was the dunmer in the cell across from him...

Well I don't think it would be quite that in-depth, but i assure you that each and every kill will be planned out Assassins Creed style.
How to not get caught.
Where they might go to be alone.
Maybe make it look like an accident?
Make them attack me first with frenzy.
Maybe I just wanted something they had so they had to go bye bye.

Well I thank you for two reasons Mr. Glaard, First for giving me the idea to make this character. Second because now I want to go make him right now! So i will.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand bored

my major cause of restartitis is usually how my character looks....i'll accept it at the moment because i just want to get on with the game but then like 50 hours in i'll notice some slight feature in his face that really bothers me so i start a new guy :P
