Dana's TOP 10 Mods - A Keening Website List

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 5:04 am

EDIT: THE LIST HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND POSTED ON THE KEENING WEBSITE:
http://www.automatichamster.com/keening/topten.shtml
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In light of my impending release of Keening Part One, I'm compiling some lists for the Keening website in hopes to help players improve their experience. There are many lists out there that are helpful, and I also want to list them here. My contribution will be to keep my list short and simple, with graphics presented for each entry so that I have something that isn't overwhelming to offer when people ask what mods they should get after buying Morrowind.
-------------------------------------------------------
MOD LISTS
-------------------------------------------------------

Morrowind Sound and Graphics Overhaul by Kingpix
http://morrowindoverhaul.rpgitalia.net/
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8987
This is a massive mod/ utility compilation with an auto-installer. Even if you do not install this, MSGO offers a pdf with links to all the mods that it uses. Mods on this list that are included in this compilation will be tagged with ""

BTB's Morrowind Mod List

Morrowind Modding Guide by Knots
http://www.somethingfornobody.com/2011/morrowind-modding-guide/

-------------------------------------------------------
The following list is what I would recommend to a new player that wants to quickly and easily update Morrowind. I will have other lists of top bug fixes & utilities, retextures, atmospheric mods, quests, tweaks, fast travel, city expansions, stores, and retextures. I'm not planning on making weapons or armor retexture lists, as that is not my area of knowledge.

I'm interested in hearing about known bugs or problems with these mods, expansions, or alternates that do similar things. I am interested in providing links to the creator's websites as well. I might like to add notes about ease of installation and un-installation.
-------------------------------------------------------
TOP TEN MODS - Must-haves for new players
-------------------------------------------------------

1. MGE / Morrowind Graphics Extender
http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/
Not so much a mod, but a tool. Basic Functions allow for widescreen, higher resolution, and anti-aliasing, among other functions. A good tool for the average player.

MGE XE
http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=41102
A version of MGE designed for high-end computers, this tool is very good at handling advanced Distant Land, Water Reflections, and Shaders. This is the tool that is used to get all those amazing screen shots you have probably seen.

2. Better Heads by Gorg and Arathrax, compiled by Motoki
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=2735
Without the use of celebrity heads, this classic compilation adds new playable heads while replacing all of the default NPC faces. Not perfect, but it gets you a good start.
- note: some female redguard faces have drawn criticism

Alternate: Changing Faces NPC Replacer by Leeloo
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.detail&id=661
- note: this collection includes some repeating celebrity heads, but nevertheless includes some very good work.

3. Better Bodies by Psychodog Studios
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=213
[As listed on Keening Downloads Page] COV and CGA Require Better Bodies. Most people who mod their games already use this, as it brings character bodies up to date by replacing the default segmented bodies with a seamless, more anatomically correct model. You can choose between either nvde bodies or bodies with permanent underwear. This is considered to be one of the most essential mods by the modding community.

4. Morrowind Visual Pack Combined 3.0 by Ayse, Lord Gabryael, Qarl, Raptre, & Zuldazug
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2915
http://elderscrolls.filefront.com/file/Morrowind_Visual_Pack_Combined;56241
Alternate: Connary's Texture BSA at BTB's List: http://btb2.free.fr/morrowind.html

5. Vurt's Trees
Bitter Coast Trees II
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9044
Ashlands Overhaul
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8200
Ascadian Isles Mod [Fantastic New Mushrooms]
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8190
Grazeland Trees II
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8993
Leafy West Gash II
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9037
Solstheim Trees II
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8490
Mournhold Trees
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8812
Alternate: Ascadian Isles Tree Replacer II [Lore-Shaped Mushrooms]
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9025

6. Female Armor:
The Divine Domina by Jeremy McGuiin [5 entries]
http://jeremy.moddersrealm.com/index.html

Domina Madness by Canadian Ice [4 entries]
http://canadianice.moddersrealm.com/armor.html
Essential mods that convert armor so that it has a female version, while adding a few new sets of armor. Adding 9 new .esp files may seem excessive, but I have merged them into one file for my personal use.

7. Better Clothes by Psychodog Studios
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8737
More Better Clothes by Plangke
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8931
Better Clothes for Tribunal by Keazen
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6736
Better Clothes Textures by Darknut
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7401
This set of mods converts the default clothing to the Better Bodies mesh and adds some detail to the textures while staying true to their original appearances.

8. Graphic Herbalism by [Paul] ManaUser
http://webpages.charter.net/manauser/morrowind/#gherb
This mod changes the process of harvesting ingredents to a simple click which visually removes the plant after it is picked, rather than the default method of having to open plants as containers.

9. Take My Place by abot
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8175
Absolutely essential AI improvement that gives an option to exchange places with an NPC that is blocking your way. The alternative would be trying deserately to jump over them or waiting for them to move, which can be frustrating.

10. Animation Compilation by Artaios (w/Dirnae)
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9020
This mod replaces the awkward default player animations. The newer version of this mod removes the First-person animations, as some people did not like their shield blocking their vision.

6. Female Armor:

why do people love this so much? it's pretty average to be honest, ever suit of armor become retextured belladonna armor. I'm all for gender-specific armor, but i like variety too.

When I play a female character, I want her to have a female body, not a man's body. Granted, yes, same mesh over and over, but I don't know of an alternative. If you know of a mod that accomplishes this with more variety, let me know about it so I can try it and list it! :D

Also, if you know of alternate texture packs than connary or visual pack combined, I'd like to know about those, too, especially if they use an esp or bsa so that they can be easily uninstalled.

I play female characters almost exclusively, so like Superkitten I like my female characters that wear armor to actually look female in them. Also, there really isn't much in the way of an alternative. Plangkye's version went unfinished.

Plus I put on Darknut's DD-specific retextures and the BB update to eliminate clipping, and it's not bad at all.

Thanks for the backup! Video games notoriously forget the girl players. It was nice that Bethesda released a couple of new female armors as a free download [LaFem Armor] after Morrowind came out, but they obviously forgot it.

I can probably find the darknut mod you're talking about, but do you have a link to the BB update? I don't have either of these, and they sound like they could be included as part of my list under that category.

I do my part by making mods with lots of pretty dresses and strong female NPCs in them.

The way most male players apparently play TES games I guess that's still going by the flow of male players, if you know what I mean. :P

The "improved new sixy figure" also includes a waist smaller than the character's head. I've always felt the new domina meshes look silly.

I don't.... actually know what you mean, lol. You have to spell things out for me, I mostly hang around with girls and gay guys IRL.

All I know is that when I play, I go around collecting NPCs and picking out outfits for them and arranging every little object in my player house, and my brother gets frustrated and wonders why I don't just go play Sims. And I do play Sims... just figured if I was gonna arrange all that stuff in player house, I might as well just learn to mod...

OMG you too?? haha, awesome! *hugs*

Morrowind is like Sims with swords. As a player in Oblivion, I was so sad that I couldn't fill a bookcase with books and relics without having them bounce and fly all over the place. I played Skyrim and pushed that cart all over Riverwood, watching it roll and tumble just by bumping into it, for at least ten minutes. Much fun was had. Physics makes me laugh so hard that I cry. Hence, my return to Morrowind to mod and play.

Oh, and Silverfox - I'm also working on a top retexture list (excludes landscape, creatures, weapons, and armor) and I'm going to feature your better gems on it.

If people load up Morrowind to check out Keening, I want to give them a chance to see it the way I see it when I build it. This all came out of my shocking wakeup call when I installed the Keening package into a fresh vanilla install. I can't change all of Morrowind with my mod, but I can at least help give people the tools to do so. Mod Lists were what helped get me into modding, so hopefully I can give back this way.

Oh yeah The Sims was like getting too much for me and I ONLY played the game for making houses nice and messing with the sims lol. But modding has been my passion since I played Dungeon Siege, my first love.

Interesting... I have dungeon siege 2 on the shelf behind me. I haven't played it - I "rescue" games from my brother when he is done, as he's gone 100% digital. My earliest games were created on a Commodore 64, then Amiga, but I haven't done anything until now... now, with Morrowind. Missed the whole game-making process!

I'm just glad that the modding community is still alive and well and growing again - that I didn't miss the boat... I may actually be getting in just at the right time. :D But in a way, it feels like coming home.

Getting back to an earlier topic, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=9229 presents a solild alternative to Divine Domina that isn't as repetitive mesh-wise. Disadvantages include that it's well, partial! DD has it's place, though, on my less powerful machine's Morrowind install (a certain "unique" Pentium III proc on that guy... so yeah its slow)

Thanks for the list! That looks like an excellent project - I hope it gets finished at some point. I'm going to check to see what happens if that gets installed after all the domina mods are installed. It seems to replace 3 armors that are in Domina #2, 2 from Domina #2, and 1 from Canadian Ice. If it is a plug-in, then one can hopefully have it load after the domina plug-ins as an option.

I really wish they would release the 9 domina mods as one single plug-in. I have them combined into one plug-in for personal use - Considering how there is a limit on the number of mods one can have installed, combined plug-ins are often vital. I would love to release this combined plug-in (it would still require the files from all nine downloads), but I'm going to see if permissions are available or even required for a combined esp that still requires the original files.

I just tried it out - the plugin loads in after the domina mods, and it looks great. So, one could use the domina mods AND Plangkye's mods together, getting the best of both worlds. The difference in body shape is subtle between the two, but Plangkye's work is worth having. I'm adding it to my own mod load and to the #6 entry on my list along with the domina mods.

From what I've seen on this forum male players of TES community who play female characters in skimpy outfits seem to be in majority. :P

TES69 does a lot of things I don't think anyone else does. At least I really freakin hope so.
