I dare a Bethesda employee to answer this.

Post » Wed Aug 04, 2010 1:44 pm

Dear Bethesda employee,

Do you know and realise that the ps3 version of F:NV is prone to more then one freeze every hour of gameplay? Or maybe the hitching occuring every 30 seconds? They are frustrating and give this game the overal feeling of failure. If it was not for the performance issues this game would be godlike even with all the bugs. I bet the majority of people would like to see the performance fixed and only THEN they would want bugfixes and whatnot.

So now for the real question: Are we going to get any performance fixing patches yes or no? If no, I would like to know why.
There's no point in lying, I'd rather hear the painful truth then waiting for a lie that will never happen.

The performance issues have nothing to do with Bethesda, it's all related to a known havok engine memory leak.. Beth/Obsidian can fix things such as graphical bugs , scripting errors ect ect, but performance issues related to havok is not one of those. I'll add that it's highly unlikely we'll be seeing a patch that fixes these issues since the version of havok used in FNV is outdated and no one will want to spend money to fix the old version when the next-gen one is on the way.

Although I'm a huge ps3 fan, I must say that to be fully enjoyed, FNV should be played on PC. First and foremost, Fallout and elder scrolls are pcrpgs.

Actually, no. I'd rather the glitches and scripting errors be fixed first. Frequent saving can easily work around the freezes, and the slowdowns in FPS is quite comparable to lag, which is something I got used to a long time ago. What more annoys me is the scripting errors that prevent me from finishing several quests, as well as the entire game. These are things I cannot work around, and thus are things I would like to see fixed first.

But yes, I would like to see at least some indication from Bethesda that we are being heard; I specifically post about all scripting errors I encounter in as much detail as I can specifically so that they can fix them. It would be nice to know that I'll be able to continue the game soon (the only things I know of that I need fixed to move forward right now are the "Old School Ghoul" error with Ranger Andy, and the "Oh My Papa" glitch after completing "Don't Make a Beggar Out of Me".)

@Omega Scythe

The issues you point out are definitely things we should expect to see fixed in the 1.2 patch, no argument there.

Traditionally, PS3 support has been non-existent. This is less to do with Beth and more to do with the money grubbing attitude of playstation, who want the port but are apparently unwilling to support it. The support both the PC and X-box 360 versions recieve is both timely and competent, the lack with PS3 can only be placed at the door of playstation, so take your issue up with them.

If Bethesda was aware that this engine was being used (which I'm pretty sure they were) - then yes, they are responsible.

Yesterday a friend of mine asked me if I played FNV and was shocked that I did not buying it because of its issues. To be honest with you I simply don't get these people.

As Bethesda said, yes, it's getting certified, so we should get it pretty soon. I'd say this week

If Bethesda was aware that this engine was being used (which I'm pretty sure they were) - then yes, they are responsible.

Ya this^^

And...unless they think they can do plenty well without any future PS3 business it would behoove them to make sure they do whatever it takes to fix this game.

The statement that this game is a PCRPG and is meant to be played on PC only is laughable. I'm quite sure that PC players much prefer playing it on PC but the fact that they made console versions make your statement invalid. This is a RPG and it should be playable on any platform that it was designed for. If it was intended to be a PC only game then it should have been made available on PC only.

Also...if it is Bethesda's belief that the PS3 user's business is unnecessary then I'm seriously doubting their ability to survive in the long run. Consoles are only going to become more and more the mainstay of video games and since the 360 has about reached it's full potential and is now on the downslope of it's life expectancy with no plans for a next gen follow up, it would be foolish to dismiss the PS3 completely as it is only now beginning to see it's full potential.

Any video game manufacturer that plans to survive in the next few years should really be looking at bumping up their console plans because I'm pretty sure that the next gen of consoles will see the PC on it's way to retirement. As consoles are able to do more and more of what a PC does the PC is becoming less and less necessary. And it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see next gen consoles as items that really do everything. Aside from Sony's claim that the PS3 "only does everything", which it doesn't...it does do quite a bit...just think of all it actually does do and ask yourself honestly if you really think that there will be a need for anything else in your home if you own a next gen console. I'm thinking they will perform all the tasks that a PC can now and also provide all the necessary entertainment for our homes too and if that's the case then what will be the need for a PC at all? Yes...I think it would be suicidal for any game maker to lose out on the business of console users at this point in time

Can you tell us where you saw this? This is the first I've heard of it. A link to the statement would be nice.

Also...QA can take some time. I've played other games where patches were on their way as soon as they passed through QA and from the announcement to actual implementation it was weeks to months. In light of this I'm not exactly confident that we will see it this week. Would be nice but I wouldn't be surprised to see it take anywhere up to the first of the year for it to actually arrive for download. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I humbly disagree with this, for a few reasons. First off, PC gaming is still alive and well, it's just that it is no longer the ONLY gamer market out there. Thus, while games marketed towards mainly PC gamers might decrease in frequency, I doubt they will disappear entirely.

As for your comment that PCs will be replaced by consoles, you're both right and wrong. Most technologies of today are heading towards convergence, with features being co-opted by devices all across the spectrum. What is probably (eventually) going to happen is a joining of these different technologies, where we will have one computer device with multiple interfaces around our home, and one mobile device, for each of us. This, however, will probably not happen for some time. In the meantime, I don't believe PCs or consoles going anywhere any time soon.

Thanks for the answers people. I would just like to say to those who do not have these issues they are either lucky or not far in the game. Either way I'm still playing it.
I still like to get answer from a Bethesda Employee.

As hilarious as you may find it. It's a fact, not an opinion. The game was designed from the ground up for pc, xbox and ps3 got a ported version. Furthermore fallout, even in the interplay days, was always intended as pc games. It's common knowledge that the engine is made with pc as it's primary focus, this has always been so with all of beth's games.

Hell, the console version even hold clues to this and is completely unashamed about it. Just check the challenge called ''Just point and click'' which I believe has to do with killing enemies with big two handed weapons. Thats a direct reference to the PC mechanics. Note that they didn't change the name to ''Just hit R2,then toggle the anologue stick till you highlight the right body part, press R1and then press X'' for the console versions...

Also, before trying to contradict someone, a little research on the matter would make it easier. I'm not trying to start an argument, just saying that it's good to know what your talking about before attempting rebuttal.

Finally about your ''PCs are about to die'' statement. The same can also be said for console. The future of gaming lies in streaming, eliminating all need for meeting hardware requirements. All games will be streamed to you via external machines that run the game locally from a remote location. Games will no longer be bought from CDs, you will be buying rights to software access. So in short, consoles will soon be stripped of all gaming hardware and will function more like a modem then anything else.

I am not making this up btw, a prototypical service is already available and is called Onlive, but don't take my word for it, just google it.

I believe he was taking issue with your (seeming) insinuation that this game should be played on PC -only.

It was released on XBOX and PS3 - and it should be playable on XBOX and PS3.

If it WASN'T playable - it damn shouldn't have been released on those platforms.

And that is the bottom line.

It is ''playable'' as per se, but only as good as the platform you are playing it on will allow. I've finished the game on PS3 and so have many others, this alone proves that it IS playable.

The problems in FNV were predictable, seeing as fallout 3 goty had the same ones and as a consumer it's your responsibility to research an make sure what you are buying.

Just like with video game emulators, it can run games designed for consoles, but often, not without problems and if you can't handle that, then it's your responsibility to go out and buy the console on which that specific game was meant to be played. So in short, if you can't handle the problems on ps3, go buy the pc version.

Cobblers. If that's the case, why do no other Havok using games - of which there are quite a few - have these issues? They don't. Blaming bugginess on Havok is just ridiculous. The game's bugginess is Bethesda/Obsidian's fault.

It is not playable by many many people. The fact that two can play it, if two cannot - doesn't make the excuse that all is well. It simply doesn't. And if you'd like a better insight into the magnitude of this issue - I direct you to the WIKI entry at the "Reception" section.

I'm going to laugh (again) HILARIOUSLY at this comment. So, it's the consumer's fault, for buying a game, that was advertised to work on the platform it was designed for, but really had no hope of working because the engine used was faulty?

That is just soooooooo wrong.

Thank- you.

Buy the pc version??!?!!! You know nothing about me, or my personal circumstance. To suggest to me, that I should "go buy the PC version" after spending 60 dollars and hours and hours of time on the PS3 version - is just too funny, and I'd lol across this page if I didn't think it would be deleted. To suggest to me, "go buy the pc version" - when you know nothing of my ability to play a game like this on my computer - is ludicrous.

Thank YOU.

Actually prior to the 3.27 firmware release the "fat" PS3's could have Linux installed on them basically transforming them into a PC and Sony wanting to prevent any type of hacking (thanks to some dikenose that spread the word around the interweb that he hacked a PS3 using Linux) got rid of that feature in 3.27 if you wanted to continue to be able to play online, or use the PSN store etc. future consoles will most likely never have the capabilities that a PC does since console companies don't want to worry about their platforms being hacked.

Anyways to the topic at hand, replying to the frame rate issues supposedly due to a memory leak in the HAVOK engine, why was Oblivion so much smoother and had less freezing or slowdown issues?

Edit:
@ Wretch11

Are you for serious!? You must be taking too many Mentats, Buffout, Jet, Psycho, Beer, Vodka, Whiskey or something because you are soooo far off base. I have a PC perfectly capable of play FO:NV, however I prefer playing games on console (except for when it comes to RTS and the like) The game was released on PC AND 360/PS3. It should work on all three platforms the way it is designed to work, which honestly it was probably designed to work in the shoddy way that it does, a company should not be able to get away with any of this. No other company ever releases games that are in this dire need of revamping, most companies will push back release 1, 2, 3, or even more times to get proper polish on their games.

I love this game
Love it to pieces.
I want it to be better.
Soo much.
If the glitches were fixed, it would be my favorite game of all time, hands-down.
As for now, without ED-E, unable to do Arcades' Quests, unable to recruit Rex, constant freezes, glitches, and so on and so forth.
I see why this game isn't as critically acclaimed as F3.
I'm disappointed.
