Dark Brotherhood Operations in game: Consolidated Thread

Post » Fri Mar 14, 2014 6:06 am

Hello fellow members.

Please find this post as a consolidation of the thread linked below, of member ideas over how they feel the Dark Brotherhood should operate in the world of the Elderscrolls.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1493408-how-do-you-want-the-dark-brotherhood-to-operate-in-game/ Thread.

Joining:

  • Invited to join by an NPC, if you can find them, and also similarly to the making of player werewolves and vampires, being invited by player members.

Poisons:

  • Poison use and the ability to make poisons, either as an independent skill, or added to the alchemy tree.

Disguises:

  • The character slot already exists in game on your character sheet/profile, to wear costumes. This would be a skill, where you can produce costumes, not dissimilar to crafting, which would have varying degrees of success for the player to hide their identity whilst in disguise. This would allow them to pass almost unnoticed by guards, and the authorities, both before, during and after a contract has been taken and performed.

Contracts:

  • This would be a focus on the player to take out, quest related and DB ranking system orientated contracts. Named NPC’s and random basic NPC’s for the purpose of being a part of the guild. This would be the bread and butter of the assassin when raising through the ranks in the guild and enjoyment at being and assassin the PvE world.

This particular section I copied and pasted, because I believed the member had a well thought out idea. Credit to -Avalon-

  • I would want a double-system for them: NPC rules and PC rules
  • To start, a player (or NPC) places a bounty on an entity (player or NPC), then either an NPC or PC agrees to the terms and hunts them down, then collects. (The basics)
  • PC's can accept bounties on either PC's in PVP areas, or NPC's in 'friendly' areas.
  • NPC's can accept bounties on PC's in 'friendly' areas, or NPC's in PVP areas.
  • This way if you really want a player hunted down, you place the bounty with the Brotherhood, and if the player is running around doing PVE content, then a brotherhood NPC may show up here and there to try and assassinate them (could be at any time, but MUST be outside of the PVP areas)... if the PC steps into Cyrodil, then the NPC's will stop hunting them, but now any player member of the brotherhood can stalk and kill them.
  • Also, an NPC could post a bounty on an NPC in a friendly area for PC's to hunt and kill (perhaps alerting guards by doing so if they are not stealthy about it), or conversely, a PC could post a bounty on an NPC in PVP areas to get Brotherhood support on taking down a potential problem NPC (perhaps a guard at a crucial point in defense of a keep?)
  • But, also, the Brotherhood may "receive" a request to hunt down a specific player who has achieved a great deal in the game? If you are of the Aldmeri Dominion, and you have killed MANY daggerfalls and ebonhearts, (more than anyone else in the AD!!) then perhaps a bounty is placed on your head for every week you maintain your top ranking? Or maybe there is ALWAYS a bounty on the current emperor?
  • I just see it as a chance to get a more 'full' effect of the brotherhood... NPC's AND PC's hunting you! (but restrict them to specifics so you are not fearing having 20 guys jump you while you are crafting lol)... but could get interesting if you and your guild are doing a 'raid' or whatever, and a couple NPC's join the fight that are not normally a part of that 'raid' lol... and they ONLY want the guys they are after lol...

This section Credit to FernRain:

  • Add in some poison,
  • Use the environment (remember this Oblivion players ),
  • Frame people,
  • Help someone fake their death (another Oblivion quest),
  • Interact with your targets first sometimes, get to know them a bit,
  • Group targets and tenet-breakers,
  • Rescue members that got caught out,
  • Use of disguises (think the Dark Brotherhood gourmet quest from Skyrim),
  • Learn a target's routine to more safely finish the contract,
  • Use professions (e.g., cooking - use a deadly ingredient, armorsmith - make a piece that will have an adverse effect when worn by the target).

Also there is a feeling that for high ranking members of the DB, there is a daily quest to assassinate the current emperor, during PvP as we as other players. This would firstly bolster the guilds status as a threat to be feared in the game and bolster the ranking system allowing members to gain accolades and rewards for terminating the emperor, which would result in temporary loss of the emperor powers that a player would get from being the emperor. Another show of force to be feared from the DB guild members.

The ability for members to help build new sanctuary hideouts.

A DB guild orientated armour look and weapon set. This would include, guild ranking system reward items, specific to the DB and usable only by its members. For example only, a mount like Shadowmere, or Ancient DB Assassins armour.

Also one of the few times in the game where any member of any alliance may interact with each other as neutral players. Brothers and Sisters of the DB would not attack each other, while in a hideout.

I would be overwhelmingly delighted if the DB makes an appearance in game, certainly for the PvE part of the game. I would feel it could add yet another level of dynamics to the game play for PvE'ers, specially if your out adventuring and a random NPC DB assassin decides, that someone on your travels that you have annoyed in part of a quest line, decides to perform the black sacrament and take a contract out on a player.

If any more ideas, please post below.

I totally disagree on poisons being exculsive to the brotherhood. No crafting should be exclusive to a guild. I hate these guys... so I won't be able to make poisons? Nonsense. If they add poison, hopefully, it will just be a new part of the alchemy skill available to everyone.

I don't know about bounties either. Getting attacked randomly by NPCs is fun at first, but it quickly becomes annoying.

This is a bad idea. Some players could not complete Brotherhood quests because they did not invest points in crafting?

If you re-read, the post does say, to the alchemy tree.

And this has been brought up before about poisons. Zos are thinking of introducing poisons at a later date. if poisons are to be introduced as addition to alchemy as a whole, it should be in the game from launch, otherwise we are missing out on a rich opportunity to level a skill and use the fruits of that skill from lvl 1.

I can see it being added as a result of both or either, the thieves guild and dark brotherhood.

I'm sorry but if it is even included into this thread about the dark brotherhood, it is suggesting it will be a dark brotherhood ability. If it is included in alchemy for everyone, it has nothing to do with this thread.

A lot of things will not be present at launch and we will be missing the opportunity to do them from level 1. So what? It's like any MMO, not everything is there at launch.

No i am not suggesting that it should be DB skill only not once have those words been typed.

They have also been typed into the Thieves guild thread as well. do you still have the same opinion.

These were suggestions that have been put forward by other members from the original post. Its a shame you only picked up on the poison.

Yes I have the same opinion. You make a thread about how the Dark Brotherhood should be and you include poison in it, you are suggesting, consciously or not, that the poison would be something from the Dark Brotherhood.

Maybe it could be a bonus instead (like the 'extra' bonus you could get in the single player ES games).

Do devs even read these forums? I doubt they're gonna draw from us on this. It's nice to dream though.

Most of the ideas are far beyond something any dev would even think to implement in an mmo.
I think that DB should be small simple add-on. Heavily penalising so 95% prople in the game would not want to be in DB because of negative side of DB membership.
It's small orgsnisation and it's an evil one. What I would hate the most is seeing 50%+ of players in Cyrodiil on Shadowmere or something like that, like every nightblade wearing DB gear. It should stay on the margin of society imo. I'm a big fan of DB I only played Oblivion and Syrim till I have finished DB storyline, the rest didn't appeal to me too much. DB being every man's and his dog guild in ESO would ruin the whole DB idea for me.

I would make it like vampirism, vampires have great penalty to fire resistance... Heavily walled by negative side of this choice. Being a vampire will be rare, so should be DB.

There should be contracts on other players as well. Some nice hunting through Cyrodiil to find your target.
