Dark Brotherhood questline is awesomely sick.

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:45 am

Just got done with the entire questline; it was awesome. Although quests in the very beginning were bland, as soon as the initiation phase was over and events rolled into the main story, momentum quickly built up and it did not let go until the end. Dialogue with the NPCs is refreshing; it isn't the same bland rewash and so my interaction with each dark brotherhood member felt unique. Great characters, good action and a few twists make this line a worthy one. Everyone should try it, even if your character is 'good'. Iono, make up an excuse for your character when you finish if you must keep the role playing congruent, something like 'I was seduced by the dark side, now my character is on a journey to find redemption'.

What did you guys think.

I seriously thought I was playing a whole separate game when I did this questline. I usually will jump around different story lines to keep from completing them too soon (for me). This one I pretty much played through once I started. It was fantastic.

I cleared the Dark Brotherhood questline in Oblivion, and, well, by finding redemption; I turned on them and wiped them out ;)
Looking forward to the DB quests in Skyrim, but for the time being they are sending bounty hunters after me.

It was, in the end, a sad copy-paste event as in oblivion. Why, oh WHY did the sanctuary and all cool assassins have to die.. again? :(

bwuh? the dark brotherhood was a campy parody of an assassin's guild. it relied on the same basic "twist" of the DB in oblivion, as well as jumping to that tired drama point of assassinating the president. these "characters" of yours were only fun because they are as psychotically-minded as the average gamer when playing a sandbox game, not because they were actual good characters.

the whole plot revolves around circumstance and entirely unexplained events and motivations. i GUESS it was more fun than the companions... cant say much else in favor of it.

Agreed, that was the only problem I had. Other then that the questline was amazing far better then the theives guild. Although is was disappointed I didn't get any super special armor for completeing it.

I consider it pretty [censored]e. One, you have absolutely no control over the questline and after deciding to join the Brotherhood you can't turn on them: they're essential (ie. immortal).

Spoiler
Why? Oh, that's right: plot device.

Two, it doesn't make a speck of sense.

Spoiler
The journal states "there's no going back now" after killing your chosen victim. Uh, what? How does killing a whiny Nord murderer/[censored]ing Nord mom/[censored]ing Khajiit crimelord make it impossible to go to the Imperials and rat out the Brotherhood? For the love of M'Atra, you spend the game killing people and by the time you meet Astrid you've racked a couple hundred kills, including relatively innocent people, so I don't see how a single throat slashed is going to prevent you from notifying eg. General Tullius that the Brotherhood is operating in the area. Or even siding with the Emperor, who even OFFERS you to turn on your employers. It's really sloppy design.

Three, there's absolutely no context or reasonable rationale given for the questline.

I just killed in the Dawnstar sanctuary and so far I think that sending you to the imperial guy was a lame choice for the progression of their questline. Seems like an easy option for the Guilds storyline to be written easily.

Cicero, he was the only thing I really liked about the the Brotherhood this time around. All of the members were phonies, save for the one Shadow scale guy whom I was quite fond of by the way. From the moment Cicero showed up, I knew he was the man. Everything that poser of a leader said pissed me off, she really was annoying. Cicero and I are the greatest of friends, the Brotherhood didn't get "good" until the end really.

Though I REALLY want that crimson colored Redguard headband thing.

I did find the whole unexplained thing frustrating. But other parts of the questline makes up for this.

I primarily like that some darkbrother hood characters are much more developed compared to other npcs. Cicero had 5 books about him. All the characters had way more lines of dialogue and on the whole more unique, I particularly liked the werewolf and found what he said + his explaination quite funny.

these "characters" of yours were only fun because they are as psychotically-minded as the average gamer when playing a sandbox game

This is just unfounded and more due to your own conception of how others react. By saying this, you are classifying me as the average gamer which is an unfounded assumption. Furthermore, it might not even be true that the average gamer think this way. Please be more responsible when staking claims.

I might have joined them but they pissed me off;

1). They sent assasains after me for unknown reasons when I was a lower level.

2)
Spoiler
They abducted me when I was sleeping. That really pissed me off. It was also annoying that Lydia just let them (she is always in my bedroom....she never leaves)

3) I didn't like the ultimatum they give you when you meet the Brotherhood for the first time....so I killed them all.

In the game world I am kind to bunnies and kill everything else that annoys me.

It was fun, possibly the greatest of the guild questlines. (I haven't finished Thieves Guild and College of Winterhold, and I expect awesomeness from those too)
It was a bit short, and I'd prefer more casual assassination jobs. A remake of "Whodunit", "The Lone Wanderer" and "Accidents Happen" would make me fall in love.
Everything seemed to either be about the storyline, or just small jobs given by Nazir. (Why did I have to kill Narfi, he was way awesome)
