Dark Elf Voice?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:08 am

I thought the Dunmer were much cooler sounding in Morrowind and was pretty disappointed when I heard how uh, "happy" they ended up sounding in Oblivion.
And you know what I never understood? Does anyone remember watching this early Oblivion gameplay Demo with Todd's commentary?

Notice how around 0:50 the Dark elf has the proper voice! What was with that? Why didn't they use this in Oblivion? It seemed like the Dunmer were supposed to have their real voices in Oblivion, but didn't for whatever reason.

I rather Dunmer have completely different voices than the previous TES games .

This is actually one of my biggest complaints about Oblivion. I don't have a lot of complaints about it, BUT I LOVED THE DUNMER VOICE IN MORROWIND. I was so confused when I met my first Dark Elf in Cyrodiil. What the hell happened to him?

I never saw that video before. Why didn't they use him to voice the Dunmer!

The voice actor totally did the voice of Haskill in the Shivering Isles too, so it's not like he didn't want to work with them. Maybe it was just a situational thing where he wasn't available for the full project. I don't know. It bothers me.

I'd really like to see the original Dunmer voice make a return, it was so cool. If not, well, I'll live with it.

I chalked it up to native Dunmer speaking differently than outlanders. That's what Morrowind always said.

I totally know what you mean. Dark elves are supposed to be badass! My theory to account for this major discrepancy was that the Dunmer in Cyrodiil weren't constantly inhaling the ash storms of Vvardenfell, so they didn't all sound like angry smokers. But of course this was just my own rationalization.

Did it? Can you provide a source or anything, I don't remember reading that, but I might have just forgotten.

Also a few Dunmer in the game that claim to be native to Morrowind don't speak like the Dunmer in Morrowind, so that's kind of shaky.

That's a pretty good excuse. I never even had one myself, I always just thought "well, they talk differently now" and left it at that.

They did say something like this, but if my memory is correct they specifically use the term "accent" of an outlander, which I don't think is the same as tone of voice.

It was as good as an excuse as I could think up of. But it doesn't make sense, since it has no effect on all the other races, and also since all the Dunmer in Solstheim and Mournhold sound all raspy.

Well, I really loved the original Dunmer voice, it was way more fitting. Seeing as we'll be getting a larger voice cast in Skyrim I hope we get to hear some Dunmer sound like they should.

I voted for the last option, only because I don't think there will be a single voice actor per race per gender. Dark Elf males could have several voice actors. It's also understandable that the original Dark Elf voice actor couldn't do it. Can you recite thousands of lines in that voice? Your throat would bleed :P

I hated the Dark elf voices in Oblivion. I hope they bring back the Morrowind ones, it made the dark elves more mysterious and awesome.

I think the Dunmer in Cyrodiil sound different because local duner are supposed to be more "iimperialized".

I doubt it was at the "last moment". The voice work in that video was probably done earlier in production, specifically for the preview (note how the Imperial has his original Morrowind voice too, not his Oblivion one), and the real voice work was done later.

Yeah, elves in Oblivion has such gay voices. I heard they actually lost the files due to a HD crash or something like that and had to use the same ones for all elves.

Well, first off, I really hope every race/six has it's own voice actor. That's just required honestly.
Second off, I really also hope that Dark Elves have an appropriate skin color/raspy voice.

that video is a bad example. get some sound files of morrowind dumner phrases (specificaly- we're watching you- scum, nwah, muthsera, hello, outlander, juib's dialogue and a few others)

also- it would be interesting if females sounded like thay had some gravel added to their voices (although not at a low pitch like the males) - perhaps you can add this to the poll?

Yeah, the Morrowind voices were better. I bet they will return them to those voices in Skyrim especially since they are having so many voice actors this time around. Not just one for all the elves. By the way, the female Dunmer in Morrowind did not have raspy voices so the Vvardenfell environment must have nothing to do with it.

it has nothing to do with vardenfell - azura got angry and cursed them all with raspy voices, ash like skin and red eyes

honestly it could be nice to have a choice at begining between 2 or 3 voices per character/race/six.

The old Dunmer voice from Morrowind was totally badowl. The concept video makes it sound a bit rubbish, but overall it would have been superior to that lad-de-dah voice that ALL the elves ended up sharing.

I hope the diversity for all the races has increased. Like, this time, all the races have a different voice set.

The raspy voices really annoy me, but if that is how the Dunmer are supposed to sound then so be it.

I want several new voices.
Morrowind's Dunmer voice was terrible and only bearable because of the small amount of voice acting.
