[WIP] Dark Masters Series

Post » Sun May 29, 2016 3:26 pm

Hello,

This is my first post on the forums. I am a long time lurker, I've been around the Morrowind forums since before the game was launched.

I had one released mod for Oblivion, search for 'Spell Tomes Grigors Grimoires' on the Oblivion Nexus.

I was planning on a series of mods for Skyrim but issues with the engine link having to do voice acting caused me to abandon the project. Then I reinvigorated about playing Morrowind again due to Darkelfguy's videos and thought I would instead develop the mods for Morrowind... it is after all, a much superior game.

In the post below I'll post the design notes for my first mod. I'd like to get community feedback on how I can best port this design to work well in Morrowind.

Thanks!

Dark Master Series

###################################################################

====================================================================

== I. Dark Masters 1 - Feast of a Thousand Souls

====================================================================

--------------------------------------------------------------------

-- A. What is the Dark Masters series?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Dark Masters is a series of small mods each featuring a spellcasting Master that the player can become an apprentice to. They each cover a type of magic or element of lore that I think was missing from the vanilla game. Each Master will be a servant of at least one Daedra Prince. They do not operate cults, they work and study alone but are in need of someone to help in their magical research.

These mods will add new characters, quests, real Elder Scrolls books, spells, abilities and items to add to your gameplay experience. While they won't contain strict lore as I am creating brand new characters my goal is to make them as lore friendly as possible. Please let me know if you notice any discrepencies or issues.

They are my way of giving back to The Engineering Guild community and all the great quest mods that I have gotten to play.

This one has only one major character and no new locations or assets. This is specifically done to make my life easier as I am under the impression that Skyrim is buggier and harder to mod than previous Elder Scrolls games.

This thread will be where I store my research.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

-- B. Background

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The Dark Master here is a Molag Bal worshipping Redguard Master Vampire Necromancer named K'avar living in the abandoned Dwemer tower of Reachwind Eyrie.

K'avar specializes in draining (restoration) and soul trapping (conjuration), not reanimation or undead. He is a different type of necromancer from the classic image of one, that doesn't really interest me. I wanted to explore souls and soul trapping with this mod. The perfact Daedra Lord for that in my opinion is Molag Bal.

Molag Bals domains of interest are spiritual enslavement and domination. Molag Bal's main goal is to trap souls into his domain, Coldharbor. This will tie into K'avar's goals which the player will learn about throughout the course of the quest.

Notes:

- K'avar is modeled after Ad Avis from QFG2/4.

- Whispering, hissing voice. Snarls a lot when wants them to leave..

- Fled Redguard lands after Thalmor battles in Great War... say 400-500 years old Vampire Master (but note: not a vampire lord!!)

- Expert conjuration and master restoration training available.

- Sells absorb style hurting/heal restoration spells and soul trap... that's his speciality

- Sells soul gems and potions of blood, skulls, bones, human heart, human flesh

- Views character as meat, lots of fetch quests. insults them all the time.

- also wants to block out sun, but doesn't have lord harkon's power. aware of that scheme and letting it run its course

Blackmail, extortion, and bribery are as much the weapons of the Witches of Molag Bal as magic is. The Invocation of Molag Bal is held on the 20th of Evening Star, except in stormy weather. This ceremony is seldom missed, but Molag Bal often appears to his cultists in mortal guise on other dates. When my grandmother died in an attempt to poison the heir of Firewatch, I reexamined my faith in the cult.

-- F. Vampirism...Daggerfall Style! Reintroducing the Anthotis Clan

There is very little 'official' source material on the Anthotis vampires and I don't have Daggerfall installed on this computer anymore.

The following information is from somewhere on the internet, my notes didn't say where:

-- H. About Molag Bal

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Molag Bal is the Daedric Prince whose sphere is the domination and enslavement of mortals. His only desire is to harvest the souls of mortals and to bring mortals' souls within his sway by spreading seeds of strife and discord in the mortal realms. As mentioned above, this is not inherently evil, although its effects are generally negative. His realm is called "Coldharbour," a twisted dark version of Tamriel.

Molag Bal is said to be the father (along with Vivec, whom he seduced[22]) of a population of mutant degenerates living in the region of Morrowind bearing his name, who may have been the first eventual vampires[22], a corruption of Vivec's ties to the Heart of Lorkhan transmitted to mortals[8]. However, some other cultures disagree with that theory, claiming the creation of vampires to be in Skyrim.

It should be noted, however, that Molag Bal helps the player cure his vampirism (if it has been contracted) in Morrowind. In exchange, the hero must track down Molag Bal's daughter and kill her.[1] There is also another Molag Bal mission, at a shrine on an island east off the coast of Vvardenfell. The player must kill his lazy servant Menta Na in his lair east of Kogoruhn in the Ashlands region. If the hero completes this task, he/she is awarded the unique Mace of Molag Bal. The mace may also be acquired in Oblivion and Skyrim — in Oblivion, after a quest requiring the player to let a man named Melus kill them with a cursed mace,[2]and in Skyrim, after a quest requiring the player to slay a priest of Boethiah at his shrine in an abandoned house for desecrating it.

In a book from the Oblivion "Vile Lair" plugin, one of the other vampire creation myths is given. Molag Bal, in a rage against Arkay, the god of life and death, set out to disrupt the cycle. He ravaged a Nedic virgin named Lamae Beolfag in Skyrim, and her screams became the winds.[8] He pricked his finger and left a drop of his corrupting blood on the center of her forehead. She awoke as the mother of vampires as she was burning on a funeral pyre. She slaughtered the funeral procession, and her "unholy" progeny spread to every corner of Tamriel, much to the despair of Arkay, incapacitated by the creation of Nirn.

In Morrowind, Molag Bal is known as one of the "Four Pillars of the House of Troubles,"[1] known in Morrowind as the "Bad Daedra." Molag Bal has a shrine in Skyrim in the Abandoned House in Markarth. As a reward for freeing a priest and beating him into submission twice and then slaughtering him at Molag's altar, the player obtains the Mace of Molag Bal. During this quest, Molag Bal states that Boethiah is his rival.

Journal of the Dread Lord K'avar: Volume 1

Entry 1

About the Redguard Boldon of the Mages Guild

3E 227

Reborn!

The weak apprentice mage Boldon of the Gilane Mages Guild is no more.

It has been three weeks since my transformation into a vampire of Clan Anthotis. Praise Molag Bal for this mighty gift!

I have always had an aptitude for the dark arts, but now my powers and insights have increased dramatically. And best of all...I have an eternity to practice my craft.

I shall henceforth be known as the Dread Lord K'avar.

This journal shall chronicle my rise to power.

Entry 2

About Anthotis Clan and fighting the rival Thrafey Clan.

3E 315

I have become accustomed to the dark corridors of Volenfell, where I am staying along with many of my fellow Anthotis vampires.

The souls of the Rourken Dwemer still haunt these ruins, I can sometimes hear them whisper.

Almost a hundred years have passed since I became a Nightwalker, and rose through the ranks fighting our eternal enemies the Thrafey.

I have become bored with the life of the vampire. I have become bored with the dark arts. What else is there to learn? How else can I ascend past the rank of Master Vampire?

I hope soon for some action, some excitement from this dreary life.

Entry 3

The Great War

4E 171

Curse the Thalmor!

What the Thrafay have been unable to do throughout the long ages, the Thalmor accomplished in less than a year... we noble Anthotis vampires have been forced to flee lest the Thalmor destroy us.

How many Master Vampire's were slain? Am I the last of the great Anthotis?

I have been driven from the Alik'r Desert. They call this the Great War, I call it a calamity of the highest magnitude.

I must find a new home, far away from the influence of the Thalmor.

Entry 4

Coming to Vardenfell to learn of the Vampire Lords

4E 190

In hindsight the coming of the Thalmor was Molag Bal's greatest blessing to me, for in the land of the Dark Elves I have discovered a new reason for my existance.

Becoming a Vampire Lord!

While travelling throughout the desolate wastes of Vardenfell I came across an old text that talked of the first vampires, and how they possessed powers almost undreamed of compared to those of us who became nightwalkers through a disease. Blood Magic and Night Powers will be mine!

It is possible to gain the favour of my Lord Molag Bal through the darkest of deeds. Then through a debasing ritual the Prince of Soul-Slaves will grant his infernal power upon me.

After enthralling a Mothpriest I have learned that the World-Eater Alduin will soon be back. His return shall come with a cataclysmic shedding of blood, the perfect atmosphere for my ascension.

Entry 5

K'avar has come to the frozen desert of the north.

4E 192

I have come at last to Skyrim.

Time is fast approaching when the World-Eater shall return.

I have also learned of the meddling of the Thalmor here and their goal of inciting a Civil War. I hope my old enemies succeed, it shall make my task much easier.

I approached the local Order of the Worm in Solitude for information about how to craft my own Black Soul gems. They were most helpful. Mannimarco's minions remember the help I have given them against the Mages Guild in times past.

One thousand black souls gems are needed, I can hardly make that many in time.

I have brought on an apprentice named Therdon to help me. He is a Redguard like myself whom I have gifted with the blood. Clan Anthotis shall rise again!

Entry 6

Plans in motion.

4E 200

Alduin is set to return soon. There should be enough blood being spilt soon to make my dream possible.

Therdon is no more. He was killed by Vigilants of Stendarr. Curse the fool for not being more alert and not bringing me back the black soul gems I desperately need!

I now need to find another lackey. What ill timing!

I cannot be foiled in my ascent. O Lord Molag Bal, your servant beseeches you to send him aid.

Journal of the Dread Lord K'avar: Volume 2

Entry 1

The final chapter.

4E 201

Praise Molag Bal!

I have finally found a servant. They like many before them seek my knowledge and power. That in the end shall be their undoing.

Having them stand before me sickens me; seeing their dull, unintelligent eyes makes me want to rip their pathetic throats out of their insignificant bodies. Therdon, why did you have to get yourself killed, I hope Molag Bal is feasting upon your soul now.

But I need them for now... and for later!

I have set my new 'apprentice' on a series of menial tasks that are far below my station.

While they are gathering the materials I need I can finalize my preparations for the blood war sacrifice... Skyrim is primed and this civil war the Thalmor have instigated has made this the perfect time.

Molag Bal will finally grant me the power of becoming a Vampire Lord after I entrap the souls of everyone in Skyrim and bequeath them to my Lord!

I shall name my ascension the Feast of the Thousand Souls and Molag Bal will reward me more than any of his other servants.

Then I shall destroy the hated Thrafay, I shall destroy Harkon and his foolish Volkihar, and I shall feast eternal in rivers of blood!

Entry 2

Patience is not a virtue.

4E 201

The moons are getting closer and closer in alignment, the time is almost nigh!

I can hardly wait, my research and arcane mastery have brought me to this point.

I shall be found worthy!

Entry 3

Return from the Soul Cairn.

4E 201

My lackey has returned with the soul husks, it took them forever.

Incompetent hardly describes them. Their ineptitude may be a problem but I have no choice but to use them for now, I cannot afford the time to seek a new servant.

Once again I curse Therdon, I shall have to get my servant to crush the Vigilants lest they stop me.

Entry 4

An old enemy.

4E 201

The most troublesome Vigilants of Stendarr are dead at the hands of my new servant.

I'm surprised how easily they were dispatched, perhaps my servant is not as pathetic as I first made them out to be.

I shall have to be watchful of them in the future.

Entry 5

The enemy of my enemy is not my friend.

4E 201

I sent my servant to kill some Dawnguard members that were getting too close to my base of operations in Reachwind Eyrie.

It is terribly ironic that the order that I helped re-establish to be my proxies against Lord Harkon would in time become a threat to me.

I hope my servant does not in time grow to become as big of a threat to my power.

I shall have to continue watching, I can afford no more setbacks.

Entry 6

The unexpected journey... for my servant.

4E 201

I have located the Stave of Soul Bursts!

It is a powerful artifact that I have long coveted.

My servant is growing in power too rapidly. I shall send them to kill the Lich that possesses it and return it to me.

If they do not return, I will not mourn them.

If they do, I will use their soul to fuel my upcoming ascension.

Entry 7

The Feast of the Thousand Souls

4E 201

The time is nigh.

Tomorrow I shall kill my servant and take entrap their soul, which shall be the fuel for my first ritual, the aptly named 'Feast of the Thousand Souls'.

Upon completion I shall be the last remaining sentient being in Skyrim.

Then after I present the souls to my Lord Molag Bal I shall request that he grant me the highest honor of becoming a Vampire Lord.

It ends!

His notes - mostly speculation on lore and/or false lore, some designed specifically to kill the apprentice

Note 1 - right.

A Breakthrough in Destruction Magic

Author: The Dread Lord K'avar

I do not consider myself a battlemage but I have lived long and am adept at destruction magic.

I discovered recently a powerful mixture of magic. When you are unsure of your oppoinents always twin frost and lightning.

Why?

Firstly, very few creatures have protection against both elements.

Secondly, lightning also destroys a targets magicka while frost damages stamina so the mixture is good against both mages and warriors.

In close quarters combat I usually use sparks with frost.

When I have more room to manuever I like using chain lightning with ice spikes.

Once the target is drained of magicka and stamina and weakened by the damage I can go in for the kill and use my Soul Siphon spell to entrap their soul.

What shall I call my magical discovery? The Coldharbor combo in honor of my Lord Molag Bal's realm? Or K'avar's Killer? I shall have to revisit the naming later on.

Note 2 - wrong

Ritual to Become a Lich

Author: The Dread Lord K'avar

I have discovered how to become a lich, one of the benefits of my long friendship with Mannimarco and his Order of the Black Worm.

Too bad I am already a Master Vampire in the service of Molag Bal or I would make use of this dark knowledge.

The material requirements are rare and expensive: 4 filled grand soul gems and one unfilled black soul gem, 25 soul gem fragments, 2 amethyst gems, 2 rare emeralds and 1 flawless diamond. It would take lots of time and money just to gather these ingredients.

Next you must have slain ten pure black souls. Killing splits the soul These must not be bandits or murderers, they must be regular folk. Try an isolated village.

The final step is the most dangerous. You must climb to the top of a large mountain or cliff. Then cast your most powerful shielding spell, it should be stronger than the beginner's Oakflesh spell. Prepare a ward in your left hand and a soul trap spell in your right. Leap off the cliff to your certain demise below. As you are falling hold your warding spell, the combination of it and the shielding spell should protect your body. Right before you are falling cast the soul trap spell. The timing must be perfect, if you cast it too early nothing will happen and if you cast it too late you will be dead. A perfectly timed spell will capture your soul as it leaves your body, making the black soul gem the vessel and container of your soul. If you survive, you will have become a lich... welcome to the ranks of the everliving.

Beware What You Wish For

Author: The Dread Lord K'avar

I have learned that even the best laid plans can go awry.

Lord Harkon and his Clan Volkihar rule supreme in Skyrim and other vampires such as myself must keep hidden or be destroyed.

I have not yet achieved Vampire Lord status so I must refrain from showing non-Anthotis nightwalkers how truly inferior they are.

I was able to manipulate a fellow Redguard named Isran, a Vigilant of Stendarr. Our shared racial ties made my honeyed words easier. He was upset with his fellow fools and wanted revenge against vampires. It was easy to get him to see the benefit of building up a force of hunters specializing in hunting vampires.

He had early success due to my hidden help. From their I left them alone, hoping the new order of vampire hunters would cause Harkon and his cronies non-stop trouble.

And it looked like they were succeeding, Harkon was forced to get his minions to be more aggressive, revealing their existance and nature more to the general populace.

But last week I found a member of the Dawnguard not four miles from my lair at Reachwind Eyrie. How did they get so close to my lair? Did that fool Therdon allow himself to be followed before he was killed?

I must now do something to turn these relentles vampire hunters of my trail.

I have created my own nightmare!

A New Friendship?

Author: The Dread Lord K'avar

While travelling the wastes around Morthal I came across a fellow Master Vampire named Morval.

While he is from the untrustworthy Cyrodiili Clan of vampires, he at least was more accomodating than Harkon would ever been.

He offered friendship to me and any of my Clan I send his way, I shall have to take him up on his offer next time I am in that area.

Speculation on the Ability of Vampire Lords

Author: The Dread Lord K'avar of Clan Anthotis

Since my discovery of the existence of the noble Vampire Lord, I have sought to learn all I can of their abilities and powers.

Chief and foremost the scholars agree is the ability to change into a more powerful form, a bestial mixture of humanoid and bat.

Also most scholars I have talked to agree that Vampire Lords can fly due to their powerful wings. With the inexplicable loss of levitation magic centuries ago, this is a mighty ability I covet.

As well, Vampire Lords lose their weakness to fire! What an glorious mockery of Arkay.

Vampire Lords instinctively know the secrets of Blood Magic, the powerful ability to launch balls of eldritch power that drain the blood of enemies that are not within the range of the standard Vampire Drain ability.

Even other Master Vampires are unclear as to the other abilities of Blood Magic. Some say that this includes the ability to summon powerful dark creatures such as Gargoyles and Blood Atronochs. Others suggest Blood Magic can paralyze or crush enemies into dust. Still others insist it involves boiling the blood of your enemies. None doubt the power though.

Combining Soul Gems for Increased Power

Author: The Dread Lord K'avar

Start by heating them with a flame spell.

When hot enough use the nightmist enchantment taught to all high ranking Anthotis members.

After that they can be merged using dual telekinesis spells. Tongs or other blacksmith tools are not a good idea due to the heat.

Let the merged gem cool for 48 hours before attempting to use it, I learned that lesson the hard way.

Molag Bal is the father of vampires, our unholy patron. We were birthed here in Skyrim although my Clan the Anthotis resided in the Alik'r Desert primarily before we were driven out.
