Dark sun glitch

It's not a Vista problem. I use Windows Vista Business (64 bit) and a MSI GeForce 9600GT video card. I'm using the nVidia Forceware 175.16 drivers. No problem with anything, except that damn fog from time to time. B)

It only seems to happen with Radeons Hett. I think the first example I saw was with a 1600 and I'm getting it with a 4870.

I've got this as well. Radeon HD 4870/ Vista 64 SP1 Home Premium.

Given some graphics cards are fine, I'm assuming it's a driver issue.

I'm going to complain to ATi. If other people with the problem do likewise we might be able to convince them there's enough people still playing Morrowind to make it worthwhile them addressing this. http://support.ati.com/ics/survey/survey.asp?deptID=894&surveyID=486&type=web

EDIT: Just installed it on my HTPC (onboard HD3200) for a test. Same problem there and that was a clean install - no updates, mods, ini changes, nada.

Good idea. We should keep nagging ATi. If everyone here submitted a thing to them, they will hopefully do it.

Yeah. Best if we all complain to ATi as suggested. I can live without the sun, but the nightsky, ah...

Hmm the file's clean... site? Dunno but no problem.

The file fixed the "black" sun. Does it change the sun's color or something? I have a feeling it looks different now (Just installed MW, no mods or anything yet, been awhile since i last played (a lot of mods) so it might be just my memory.

Oh and one question, should the textures folder (except _land_default.tga, what's that anyway?) be empty if fresh install? (Vista, non-default install location)

Yes, the graphics folders should be empty, except for that map file, until you use mods that add stuff to them. The original graphics are all in a BSA file, which the computer reads from if it doesn't find the texture in the textures folder.

Just made another little workaround.
Sun looks more realistic now.

Here's a link to the 7z archive, that should be extracted to "Data files" folder. Overwrite old files, if promted.

Actually, it's less realistic, unless the player's eyes are really cameras instead of eyes.

Tried multiple "sun glare" retexture mods out there, and none of them seem to actually clear this problem up, though the "sun glare" provided in SWG's new Skies v2 mod makes it a little less annoying in my opinion (does not seem to block out as much of the sky, or really make things darker when looking near the sun now...though the sun itself is still black).

Probably will keep looking into this, but I am not sure that there will ever really be an honest resolution. Perhaps I might need to make some INI tweaks along with it...

I'm another victim of the impending black hole of doom. Again on Vista with a Radeon (3870). It was fine to http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3302/morrowind20090207043328io4.jpg and then went http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/5331/35016567sr6.jpg. I'm going to give the fix Aviloff kindly posted a try. I really don't fancy dual booting with XP just for one game.

Edit: That looks http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/6998/morrowind20090207204256se8.jpg.

I also have this problem. I'm pretty positive that the later versions of ATI's Catalyst drivers along with one or more of Microsoft's updates to DirectX are to blame for the issue. Running a Radeon HD 4870 here at the moment and I've tested both Catalysts 8.10 and 8.12 and neither will return the sun glare anymore. The sun glare DID work just fine using Catalyst 8.10 in october however so that's why I'm not 100% sure that the Catalysts are the only thing to blame here. To me it seems as if Morrowind is properly finding the correct glare texture but only the alpha channel is rendered while the colour map is not, or is rendered completely in black. The reason the replacement sun textures work is because the new glare texture (Tx_sun_flash_grey_05.dds) doesn't contain an alpha channel and the glare texture is instead added to the sun disc texture which seems to render just fine.

I had no such problems ever with version 7.x Catalysts on my old system using an ATI Radeon X1800XT card.

I've submitted a bug report to ATI as well and suggest that others who have the same issue do the same.

Cheers, UQF

Hmm, well if that one worked out for ya, I might give that most recent one a shot here...really want to clear this up!

Did this a few days ago myself...still working on a manual workaround though...about to try this other glare that seems to work for folks.

And it does in fact work, seemingly due to no alpha channel on it as stated above - woot!

Wait a second, so alpha channel in the texture is what caused the Sun to turn black? Or was it the lack of the alpha channel?

Seems it is Alpha Channel in the texture, though that really doesn't make sense to me since I know the card supports that. But, the second I got a texture not using it, I suddenly got my sun back

Could you (or anyone else) reupload this one? I don't like the newer one that much.

Well that just makes no sense.

And to make it worse we can't remove the alpha channel and upload the file somewhere for others because of legal issues. :-/

It probably has more to do with DirectX 8.1 legacy support in later DirectX versions. I know my Morrowind sun looked just fine before (with the very same driver version I am using now) but screwed up later on, possibly after some Microsoft update to the DirectX API or when I installed a new game which updated my DirectX. It might very well be that Microsoft updated some component of DirectX which in turn screwed up Bethesda's method of implementing their sun textures in MW.

Also, AFAIK both the original gamesas glare and sun texture contain full 8-bit transparency and earlier DirectX versions have always been finicky about overlayed textures with 8-bit alpha transparencies. I might be incorrect but for the gamesas devs to get those two textures to show up correctly might have required some amount of rendering engine tweaking and something somewhere along the line probably untweaked their tweak.

Cheers, UQF

Bump. Can anyone please re upload this? I'm about to upgrade my computer and I'm probably gonna get a Radeon 4770.
Which most likely means I'll get a visit from the unfriendly neighborhood black hole.

nvm, i think i found it on a russian forum. (can't be sure until i upgrade though, but i think it's the right file)

Bump-de-bump, can I have that texture? Just in case I ever encounter this problem (curse you, Windows!).
