Dark sun glitch : III

So, the sun has turned black. Being out in daylight everything seems normal until the sun itself comes into view. It's as if the texture has gone missing, but I don't know. The rays around it are also dark, and it's not half as cool as it is annoying, just so you know!

I'm not using any mods whatsoever (Morrowind and Bloodmoon files only). It may have started since I got my Radeon HD 4800 series, not sure about that though. Googling, I found some other mentions of this problem, but no solution. Any ideas would be very appreciated!

Can you check to see that you have the latest drivers for your video card?

Are you running MGE by any chance?

It may be a Vista issue, I've always seen that OS associated with the problem. Maybe it is a combination of Vista and certain video cards or drivers(the ones mentioned in the link are also Radeons).

It may be helpful to post a directx diagnostic. click start, run, then type in dxdiag and click ok. Tell it to save the file, then open the file and copy the contents.

I've got the same problem running Vista with a Radeon. I've tried several different drivers, although I couldn't go too old because of my card. Nothing helped, so I eliminated the sun by making all the Glare View lines in the morrowind.ini (there are 10 with both expansions) equal 0.

Yes, that's what it looks like. I downloaded the latest drivers when the problem first occured, it's still there. I'm not running MGE by the way.

Seems someone finally did respond on the other thread, and it seems my suspicions were correct:

Ok, it has NOTHING to do with video drivers or sound drivers or any of the mods or setup files. The problem is Windows Vista, because I installed Windows XP on the same machine and the sun reverted back to normal. Once I went back to Windows Vista on the same computer with the same drivers and hardware the sun was black again. Once again, it has NOTHING to do with video cards or drivers or setups or mod files. The problem is that Morrowind is not fully compatible with Windows Vista, period. You can probably fix the problem somehow, but the main point is that Morrowind was not made to be run in Vista. The best thing to do is to run all older games on Windows XP, and newer ones on Vista. You could set up a dual boot configuration, or you can just use an older computer that already has XP on it. Thats what I do. Hope this helped.

It could well be the Vista drivers. It only seems to be a problem with Radeons.

And BTW, the problem is back on my system, so messing with the ini was only temporary. I'm getting the black hole again, even though the sun is supposedly not there.

That's odd, changing Glare View should hide it for good, right? It's worked fine for me so far, though I didn't realize the moons would be gone as well.

Well, I think I am going to try and install a virtual XP machine on my Vista PC. MS offers some free software, though you need to have an XP disc to install an OS onto the Virtual Machine you make. We'll see how that goes...not sure if it will lead to conflicts with any mods at all though

I also found out the MS straight out states that they consider Morrowind to be incompatible with Vista...wooo

Do you have a link to that? It's really a load of crap. Other than the black hole sun (which is Radeon related), my game is running very well on Vista 64.

I'm planning to add too many mods to enhance the realism of the game to allow that to happen -_-

I'm going to need to install VM Additions so I can access shared folders from the host Vista OS on the guest XP OS (as I already have all the mods I want to use downloaded on the physical machine), and once I get that done, I need to install MW and see how that goes. Unfortunately, I am running a RP session today at my place, so I probably won't get to that sometime later on in the week or next weekend, but I'll keep you posted.

Well, having looked into this a little further it is seeming to become less and less of an option at all. The emulated hardware the VPC uses is just not up to par with what is needed to run Morrowind well. May look into some other options here, though I am thinking the best bet at this point would be to have dual OS setup on the PC, and simply boot into XP for Morrowind...don't really -WANT- to do this, but I also don't really -WANT- a black hole for a sun that darkens the area...

Back to the drawing board...I hate you Vista :brokencomputer:

It's not a Vista problem. I use Windows Vista Business (64 bit) and a MSI GeForce 9600GT video card. I'm using the nVidia Forceware 175.16 drivers. No problem with anything, except that damn fog from time to time. B)
