data\dagger.col not found :(

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:23 am

Hi! I am really sorry if this question has been asked before but I did a fair amount of looking around this forum and haven't seen anything addressing this problem, so I figured that I would start my own topic...I am sure that many of the veterans at this site are probably rolling their eyes right now at seeing a new "I need help with installing Daggerfall with DOSbox" thread.

Anyway, getting to the point, I was using the guide at http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General%3aPlaying_DOS_Installments_under_DOSBox site. I am following the directions for Daggerfall (free release) and, to the best of my knowledge, I followed the directions exactly but when I get to this point:

c:\dfcd\install

I get this error:

DOS: File not found: data\dagger.col

yet when I looked in my data folder that file WAS there. :brokencomputer:

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

If you downloaded from Bethesda's website, find another place to download it (Google will help here). Their server spits out corrupt downloads like nobody's business.

Thanks! I had downloaded the game from here. But I downloaded the game from fileplanet.com and I still get the same error... I guess I'll try again from another site. Perhaps it is me? I am a bit technologically challenged :/ Thank you very much for the help tho. :)

I got mine from FilePlanet and it works great. Not really sure about the problem to be honest. Did you extract the files to the correct place and add the required lines to your DOSbox configuration?

Hmmm....I think so... I guess I'll just remove everything and then start from scratch. Its good to know that yours worked at least. Perhaps it IS me. I definitely wouldn't rule it out...

I'm no computer expert but what you did seems right. Do you have any other games like Arena maybe as freeware? Did you have a previous version of DOSBOx? I know I had .72 at first (For Arena) and then got .73 to play Daggerfall. How about you start with Arena first and use the official guide and see if you can get that running. Wait, did your computer originaly have a documents file and "Local Disk (C:)" and is the documernts/DOS folder under "Local Disk (C:)" in the my computer section? If it is I would start fresh if you haven't already by deleting everything. If you have, try using Arena first and see if you can get that to work. Also, some computers just can't run Daggerfall. I use an XP to run it but other computers just can't run it for some reason so it could be that too.

For grins (assuming that you haven't tried this yet), try (changing directory) "CD" to the directory where the install.bat is located before running "install." As in, instead of typing "DFCD\install", type "CD\Documents" , "CD\DOS" , and then "CD\DFCD" , then "install" and see what happens.. (alternately, and much shorter, "CD\Documents\DOS\DFCD" )

Hi everyone! I was able to get it to work! I followed your advice Dagerdude, and I figured out that there there was a corrupt download in "my computer" I uninstalled everything and then started from scratch and using Taemos' guide, I was able to get it to work! YAY! :celebration: Thank you very much everyone! :hugs:

However I do have one *slight* problem. Taemos, your directions were great and I followed them exactly but the sound does not work on the game at all...what did I do wrong?

Anyway, I can't wait to start playing! Thank you all! :D

Great to see that you got it working!! Tell us how you like it and feel free do ask questions when you need too! Did you follow the UESP wiki guide for the sound or no? If you did maybe your computer needs different settings for the sound.

Oh I love Daggerfall just fine! Such good memories from my childhood are rushing back to me :)

But, yeah, I did do the correct sound setup (at least according to the guide) yet it still doesn't work (that is the sound effects, monster sounds and such) and neither are movies, but hey, I shouldn't complain as I am able to play!

What would be great for Daggerfall's 20 or 25th anniversary would be to have bethesda re-release it on cd, reconfigure it so that it would work on today's computers without DOSbox (I'm not sure how exactly) and in the cd box include the original guides and all that. I'm not sure how many people would buy it but I know that I would ;) Just a thought...

This would be 2016 and 2021, respectively. I'd hope DaggerXL would be done by then. ;)

When you're setting up your sound card, make sure your IRQ and DMA settings match what is in your "dosbox.conf" file. The defaults are IRQ=7 and DMA=1. The port should be 220.

For MIDI, your port should be 330.
