Deacon won't die, very frustrating

Post » Sun Jan 10, 2016 7:33 pm

I've seen where this has been fixed through PC, but can't figure out a way through XBOX ONE. Deacon, a previous companion, won't die in the second stage of the quest to take out the railroad (Already killed Desdemona). He's at one of my settlements, and every time I go to kill him it's as if he's not really there. He shoots at me, and some of my fellow minutemen shoot back, but you can't lock on to him in VATS or use grenades, missiles, weapons, etc.

I've tried doing other missions and coming back, resetting the game and console, and have sent a note to Bethesda, but no one has reached out and I'm now stuck where I'm in the game. Please help, thanks greatly ahead of time.

If you don't have an earlier save, you might want to start a new game. Lots of ways to bug Bethesda games, because they aren't linear and something can go wrong easily when things get out of order in some way.

Is he killable if you're enemies with the railroad?

Sorry for the late reply to those answering. Yes, we are enemies and I'm on one of the final quests to get rid of the railroad (Killed Desdemona already). I'll try the Atom power armor trick, though it appears I'm going to have to wait for a patch. It's too late in the game to go back and switch routes!

Wow, that's bad.

I plan on doing an institute run and I certainly don't want to be bugged by an immortal character.

Try having him following you before you kill the railroad.

I had an odd experience with Deacon. I had already made the RR hostile, but hadn't yet gotten the quest to destroy them. My character was hanging out at the airport with her current companion and Deacon had been left at Red Rocket. I noticed the last time I visited Red Rocket that Deacon was gone, so I figured that the quest had put him back at RR HQ for plot purposes. Anyway, while at the Airport, suddenly the surrounding BoS members starting going crazy and shooting at something. I went to go see what it was and there was Deacon running at me bright red and hostile. I shot him and he died on the spot. His body is still lying at the Airport days later.

When I did get the actual quest to destroy the RR, the quest never updated about killing Deacon even after killing all the others. For whatever reason though, I was still able to complete the quest since the game must have realized he was dead even though it didn't register in the journal.

This is partly true, but also partly misses the somewhat obvious bug Bethesda shouldn't have introduced - non-linear or not.

You can go to the RR, grab Deacon (he is the first quest, after all, for them) and then continue with him until you both become pals, and he becomes a companion.

You can then go off and do the the other main questlines, some of which (being vague to avoid spoilers) require that you kill the head of the RR. Deacon included.

Companions can't be killed.

The questline is now bugged.
