So is dead Money any good?

Post » Fri Dec 25, 2009 3:05 am

I saw the review on GT of Dead Money and well it didn't get that great of a rating, like a 6.7 out of 10. But its best to hear from fellow gamers how it fares. I got $10 laying around my house and I'm thinking of investing in Dead Money, or is it not worth the buy?

Great writing.
Challenging gameplay.
Gives around 5 to 9 hours for each playthrough.

Yeah I'd say it's pretty good.

I haven't seen any good reviews, but I can't imagine what they wanted from the expansion.
I think it's great and I really wish there were more long dungeons in a similar vein.

Yeah, I liked it. It was nice and challenging (especially on hardcoe mode, oof-da!), and had quite the interesting story.

It's good. Good story and well laid out. I imagine the low score came from someone who was not careful enough and got trapped a lot. There are many. Lotsa fun.

Personally I think that Dead Money was well worth getting, although I can also see why some may not like it especially if they prefer a gun and run style of gameplay.

It was great, but unfortunately i had a gamebreaking glitch that wouldn't allow me to leave after completing it so i guess there is always a downside.

Jumping onto this thread, instead of making a new one (not necroing, it's still somewhat fresh!), and I'd like to know what you guys think. What are the good and the bad of this DLC? Is it worth the $10? Heard it's big on the story, but if you were to compare it, how big is the story? To note, I play on the PC.

Depends.

Kids who want to kill stuff and blow things up will tell you it is terrible.
Those who look for an interesting story and enjoy unorthodox gameplay will tell you it is the best thing ever.

I fit in between. I like it so far, although you may want to turn off hardcoe to start with, since staying alive within the Cloud is difficult. I tried using my Rebreather, but no dice.

Godly writing. I'm a writer so that's the main reason I play fallout. That's why I enjoyed it. However it is challenging.

Pluses:

  • Big, almost too big
  • Tricky... run and gun will be NOT FUN
  • Great story with a lot of depth... you are rewarded for being thorough and exploring
  • Some interesting new weapons and armor and crafting recipes
  • Requires some challenging new combat tactics depending on your build (snipers are out of luck... no scoped guns in DLC as far as I can tell)

Minuses:
  • Drab... dark, colorless ... even a little bit of color would be refreshing (hard to complain though as it is very thematically consistent with the great story)
  • Forces you to adapt your game play style depending on your character build (snipers get nerfed basically by weapon options and availability of ammo)... this could be plus also!
  • Big bug: You cannot shoot explosives in ghost people's hands or in the air (in or out of VATS)... this forces lamer tactics on GUN builds...my sniper is throwing spears at heads (no points in melee) rather than blowing up explosives in enemy's hands
  • Need to play on hardcoe mode to really make it hard... although my first few battles with ghost people I got worked
  • One new monster type, but ZERO variety. Only variation is the weapons they use (3 variations)

Definitely worth the money. I can't wait to get my new automatic weapon that shoots 308 rounds into the Mojave! DPS = 250+

Worth $10, maybe. But it is very child like and very two dimensional. It is NOT a puzzle ... the narrator tells you what you need to do. Very arcadish ... the collars are silly ... seems like an after thought because they screwed the pooch the first time they built the DLC and scabbed the collars on as an cheap and dirty fix. Since Obscendian built this and not Bethesda the orginal game designers had no input, ergo no Fallout feel to the DLC. I'd like the cheat code to end the dlc when I start it, or one to disable the silly collars.

Well the color is really vital to the atmosphere that the story tries to set up. It feels like you're in a place you aren't supposed to be in and that you don't want to be in.
I went in with a lvl 16 character with my only weapon skill being guns at 70 on hardcoe and I did fine. One of the locations sets you up pretty well with guns and ammo as long as you watch your shots and don't run n gun.
You could never shoot in the air but that second point is valid. I didn't like how I couldn't target what the one of the characters told me to aim for.
Why is #4 and "minus"?
I agree with five. Although I did find myself panicking and using cover whenever one of the ghosts took out a gas bomb which was a nice change of pace.

You realize that FO3 was not the first game and that it had no "fallout feel." And the people who made the original fallouts work at obsidian right?

No good.

The background story is poor. The interaction with NPCs is poor.

The limitations of the collar start of amusing, quickly become challenging and then rapidly become really annoying. Really annoying.

Also the subquests are too samey and the environment lacks any depth. Everything looks so much the same that it is both difficult to navigate and a stretch to really care.
The holograms are really annoying. They add nothing to the gameplay or the world and they fly in the face of in-game mechanics.
The automatic rifle is a good gun but that is pretty much it for new kit. the extra 5 levels and new perks are pretty good though. Shame on you though Bethesda, shame - £7.99 for 1 new gun and 5 extra levels? Shame.

Seriously I gave up caring about half way through. Christine is kind of interesting, but only if you have had Veronica in any game, but otherwise I can see the "in-jokes" would fall a bit flat. God/Dog is predictable and the Ghoul guy is so 2-D that I can't even remember his name, let alone why I wasted 9 hours of my life on the DLC he was key to.

Personally I feel cheated out of the cash I paid for this DLC - Dead money is right on the fuc*ing mark I can tell you. If you buy this you will find the net sum is that you will have wasted $10 of your hard earned and about 7 hours of your life for teh net result of 5 levels of skills, 2 extra perks and a reasonable gun (that is bettered by using an anti-material rifle for sniping and a gatling laser for up-close-and-personal anyways).

In short - if you want 5 levels and 2 extra perks then buy this DLC but don't bother playing through it. If you aren't bothered about 5 levels and 2 extra perks then save your cash.

I'm just going to quietly shake my head at the rest of your post, but i want to address your claims about gear.

The battle rifle is useless at anything but close range, it doesn't even have a front sight post and breaks if you dare fire it. But did you forget about the holorifle that outperforms the antimaterial rifle? The light armor that protects you better than almost every non-powered armor in the game? The assassin suit? The knife that sets enemies on fire? The vending machine?

And for the millionth time it was made by Obsidian!

Great writing.
Challenging gameplay. - If you mean frustrating at times yes exactly.

Yeah I'd say it's pretty good.

It can get a bit hectic at points finding something. Everything feels like a maze and beeping collars, ghost people, traps, and Red mist don't help either. If your into thrillers this is for you. Writing is wonderful(This is all I can say, because if I get into it I might spoil it for you). And if your in Survival Mode prepare for an aggrevating playthrough. Only thing I hate about the DLC is the pure feeling that I'm being rushed to find things and I feel I don't get time to explore until the very end when I really want to leave.

Rewards are great though, but they are gamebreaking in a way.

PS PeterF its called the Automatic Rifle(The BAR like light machine gun your talking about right?), the Battle Rifle would have been the M1 garand type weapon but I think they cut it during developement. This Machine was supposed to the unique variant while the regular ones were to be called battle rifles.
