Dead Money: Horrible DLC?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:40 pm

I Liked Dead Money even on the hardest setting and playing hardcoe i found New Vegas to be easy when Dead Money came along it was the hardest part in the whole game
and gave me a good and rewarding challenge. My unarmed and melee build got through this DLC easier than my gun or lazer build.

We're talking about Dead Money, not Old World Blues. :whistling:

Edit: If you want to milk Dead Money for all it's worth OP, break the bank at the casino section of the Sierra Madre, and try to take everything out of the Vault at the end.

I happen to think OWB is the best. (Crucify me now for it not being Honest Hearts)

Ugh, personally OWB is the worst, even worse than Mothership Zeta. While Dead Money is the best.

It can't be challenging as long as you can quicksave&load.

Hm.
How about on console?
With no quicksave/load?
And no autosave with [wait] since constant tickdown of health?

Then it can become somewhat more challenging.
I'd love to see a DID let's play with Dead Money.

Finally made it through - that was a long, overencumbered, walk back to Novac

Now, should I do Lonesome Road before or after I finish then main story arc of the original game? OWB talked about there only being one road left, and Dead Money has also referenced Lonesome Road on more than one occasion.

(No spoilers please, this is my first play-through).

Yeah erm, gonna have to spoil this for you: You can't continue past the final main quest, the game ends, no matter what DLC you have.
So you could do the final quest then reload to a save (which a pop up prior to that quest asks you to make) and do LSR, but I'd do LSR before the main quest.
Oh and remember to do Honest Hearts.

I see, thank you. I will do HH, then LSR and then, finally, finish the game heh.

Then again, if you have PC version you can always get a mod to continue past the main quest's ending.

Challenging or repetitive. Even if you die, you end up in the beginning of the dlc which is the same thing as having a save somewhere. In this case the save is just far away, meaning more repeats per fail. The player will probably play more carefully because he doesn't want to repeat things again but in the end it's gonna be more repetitive than challenging. Like some older games that had no quicksave which you had to finish like this: start game, die, beging from start, overcome the last difficulty treshold, die again to something even harder, start again, repeat until game finished.
So in the end, the actual flawless speedrun takes about 2hours but with the regular rate of fails and repeats it might take days.

At least MZ tried to put on a serious face with the whole alien kidnapping thing, it had some ridiculous parts but OWB was just sickening.

I have tried to adapt, but it's kinda difficult when the air is killing you and unkillable people lurk around every corner. With better weapons and stims I would certainly have taken it slow, but going slow with a companion that engages the unkillable monsters is not an option. And leaving my companions and only using Fast Travel is equally impossible, as the monsters seems to be everywhere.

FO3 and New Vegas has quickly become one of my favourite games for a great many reasons, but this DLC changes many of the core aspects in an effort to set it apart from just another DLC, but in doing so it goes to far and in the wrong direction. The game should not be frustration but challenging and entertaining, and if I am not the only one complaining perhaps there is something to it.

If you like it - fine, I have no problem with that - but respect that others have different opinions and let's stop this right here.

(I play on Very Hard, hardcoe. Currently level 32 I believe.)

Edit: And apparently it's also impossible to shoot the gas tanks they are now carrying.

The gas tanks, yea, I have never been able to shot them either. As far as the "unkillable people"

Spoiler
IF you let Dog eat everyone, it works better. Or just cripple a limb and when they fall cut them up with the Cosmic Knife to finish them off. Simple.

You could have just dropped items in the BOS footlocker and fast travelled to Novac. It'd have been easier.

You could've put the casino loot in the limb of a body and dragged it out of the vault. (Takes a couple tries, but I milked that DLC of everything)

1. Lonesome Road
2. Dead Money
3. Old World Blues
4. Honest Hearts

I hated everything about HH except for Joshua Graham.

Lonesome road will answer a lot of your questions about the courier's past and sums up his story very well, so I think it's the most useful and worthwhile DLC. Oh.. and it adds a lot of very cool weapons and armor into the game.

Dead Money was definitely the hardest, but after a while I got adjusted to the game-style and the rest came easy. I very much enjoyed the 3 teammates and their backstories, (as well as Keyes and Sinclair).

It was hard to take OWB seriously, although it gives a nice little home as well as your own giant scientific graveyard with tons of loot.

Old World Blues is my favourite too. The beginning when your talking to the Think Tanks all at once was hilarious and I loved story in it too.

I might be one of the few people who doesn't hate any of the DLC.

Absolutely not!

Dead Money is beautifully written. The character's stories are all very compelling and tie in will with the base game, each other, and other DLC.
The Sierra Madre and the Villa are eerie. I'm always moving carefully, slowly, anything to avoid a trap or to hopefully spot that secret cache of food. The Ghost People are creepy, and fit well in the whole horror-survival tone. The sounds they make gives me goosebumps :cryvaultboy:.

It's challenging. With the Cloud, collars, traps, and companion's lives (which includes your own) to look out for, it really becomes a struggle to survive and get the task done. The implication of chips, vending machines, and caches means it's important to really take notice of your surroundings. Was that just a room with a stove in it? Or was it the key to surviving the trap lying just outside? Seriously, hardcoe Mode with hard/very hard is a respectable challenge. There's also some puzzling situations you'll find yourself in, where the next move you make requires serious thought (and maybe the reloading of saves).

Seriously, there is barely anything wrong with this DLC (maybe some of the weapons and atmosphere). God forbid if you have to reload a save and do something again. FFS, it's a DLC. I could understand you're anger if the entire base game was like that. But a couple moments of thought and planning will minimize the chances of you losing your head. If the horror-survival, puzzle, ghost town type thing isn't for you, fine. Don't buy it. But it's definitely not a bad DLC. In fact, I have an urge to say it's the best out of the four.

TL;DR: Creepy as hell atmosphere and enemies, good writing, good challenge and puzzle scenarios, good loot. Great DLC, different strokes for different folks.
