Dead Money Pros and Cons

Post » Sat Aug 14, 2010 9:48 pm

Ok i've been playing Dead Money for the PS3 and i think for the most part its bad. The story is great for it but the constant beeping of the stupid collar is so dumb and repetitve. All the characters are well done and the new perks and lvl cap booster is what really made it not a waste of cash. It would be a really good DLC if not for the collar, i mean really the collar [censored] is terrible i litally made a new character just to get away from that dam thing i want to know what happens to everyone but i just cant stop that dam beeping.

So you say it's mostly bad and then explain that it's actually great and your only problem is the collar. Okay.

Did you know you can shoot most of the speakers and radios to stop the beeping?

One thing you can do is, the minute you hear the beeping, stop, back up, and look around. Then advance cautiously, darting in and out of the radio zone until you find it. The only time I ever died from the bomb collar using this strategy was when I either tried (to see what it looked like), got stuck in terrain due to glitch, or at the very end when there were multiple shielded overlapping speakers.

Exact same method I used. The collar adds a challenge and it isn't annoying at all to me. This isn't a run and gun DLC. It's a take your time, observe, and understand your enemies, allies, and terrain type of DLC.

For me the pros for Dead Money are:
  • Starting the DLC with the challenge of limited gear and working with the gear you find along the way. A good test to see how well your character build works without the gear you would normally depend on
  • Slower pace with emphasis on sneaking, avoiding hazards and survival with limited ways to heal, a pro for those who like that type of game/genre.
  • Top quality companions and voice acting and dialog that would easily make worthy replacements to the vanilla companions if it were allowed
  • +5 to the level cap for those who want to build upon their characters
  • Can use a Sierra Madre Vending machine in the Abandoned Bunker after the DLC quest is over
  • Although I haven't completed the DLC yet, the story thus far is intriguing

And the cons are:
  • Although the exclusive gear from the DLC is not terrible, I wouldn't exactly purchase it just for the gear
  • Unable to visit the DLC area proper once the quest is over, thus killing the replayability within the DLC
  • Unable to port over any of the companions after the quest is over
  • Definitely not a "Run and Gun" type of challenge, a con for those who prefer that playing style

I would've loved the DLC if it didn't have the collar. The collar made little sense to me. The collars are all connected on the same frequency that every single radio and speaker in the Sierra Madre operates on. Really? There also just happen to be a ridiculous amount of speakers in equally ridiculous places and I don't understand why there would even be armored speakers in a place like this. After I died from them twice I had gotten tired of the stupidity of them.

Cool Weapons and Armor

Cons
It's hard
You won't have much weaponry
You can't visit the place after you complete the DLC

i hope Bethesda is in charge of all future Fallout games including NV dlc packs, don't know why Obsidian can't make a fun non frustrating game

If you hear beeping it means you should step back, not keep running forward.

All the DLC'S have there flaws but they are more fallout content and in the long run turns out to be great.

Pros:
1. Interesting story.
2. great dialogue.
3. some new cool items.
4. Good voice acting
5. level cap raise and new perks, some new cool perks were nice and the level cap raise was nice, but not overally nesecary, not a bad thing tho.

Cons:
1. speakers: they just are repetative and annoying I fail to see the point.
2. toxic cloud: pointless and annoying, not hard, just makes it more unesecary traveling and it get annoying.
3. Ghost people, interstesting but they really got repetive, there should have been way more types of enemies.
4. crashes, i experianced many more crashes in DM than in the wasteland on average.

out of 10 i would rate it 7, overall pretty decent, but there were some bad points and it really was nothing spectacular overall, worth the money, but you can live without it.

That's basically what I did. What finally got me fed up was the mess down in the vault. An almost solid blanket of speakers was bad enough but with the holograms :verymad: After getting blown up by the collar or zapped by a hologram a dozen or so times I ceased to care..

Pro
It's Hard
You have few weapons
The Collar
The bullet sponge Ghosties
The Traps
The Companions

Con
It would be nice to go back.

The Collar was pretty funny. Smoke in, look around as long as you dare smoke out and reset the beeper, rinse and repeat. I found almost all of the speakers could be run past to safety. The Traps were fun although a bit thick in some places. ;) The Ghosts are for punching, well I do unarmed, I guess you could hack em up too, I did that till I got the Bear Trap Fist.

It was almost difficult. Well done.

Pros:
New Quest
New Story
New Companion
New Enemy
New Item
New Recipes
New Locations
New Game Mechanics

Con:
Can't go back unless you are on PC.

Pros:
New weapons
Very useful vending machines
Free money every three days after completion
Fairly challenging/resources are somewhat limited
Level cap increased by 5
A few new perks are added

Cons:
Can't return afterwards so items you can bring back with you are pretty limited and if you miss something you'll have to either get over it or delete and redo the entire DLC
You will learn to HATE radios
Unfortunately companions met within can't return with you which svcks because they're fully functional companions within the DLC

I cant believe people are moaning so much about the Collars. I didnt find them a problem. Change your behaviour to play the game and stop expecting the game to adhere to your behaviour. Thats just Laziness. Adapt and Learn.

Pro's
Very atmospheric, I felt the constant urge to strive forward to get out asap but was also drawn to the place enough to investigate it completely.
The Collar, Radios and Speakers. A new kind of enemy, a new challenge. Running into an area to escape Ghost people because of my low health and lack of provisions, only to suddenly hear beeping on my collar - Excellent stuff.
Hardsore mode was particularly fun to cope with especially at lvl 21.
Realising that every provision I pick up has a use instead of it being vendor trash.

Con's
Spoiler
My biggest complaint is the Gap from exiting the vault area via the lift/elevator and suddenly appearing at the Fountain. It left a gap for me and I felt a lack of closure with the Christine character. After my Dialogue choices I was meant to go look for her, and she new this. Roleplaying my character I would have not have left the sierra Madre until I found some evidence of what happened to her. And I did spend a good hour looking.....then very sadly went to the wiki to find you cant find her. Christines Ending monologue does not justify this gap in anyway. Even a note at the top of the elevator or at the fountain would have been more plausible and would have let me LET GO.

More references and dialogue from companions after I returned to the Mohave. I felt like I had a story to tell, talk about.

Mostly pros for me, I really like this DLC. Though there's some minor cons...

Pros
Spoiler
* Very challenging. I liked being stripped of my equipment, which not only forced me to scavenge, but also forced me to learn how to create ammo/weapons and use recipes. In the vanilla game, I never bothered to learn any of these things. The collar was a very nice idea too, having to back up at every beep and eliminate the source when possible. The collar also kept me going, I'm not the vengeful type, but I was very interested in having a chat with Elijah.
* I enjoyed all of Fallout 3's DLC, but none of them (except Broken Steel) feel like an actual addition to the story of the vanilla game. To me Dead Money does just that, as it provides lots of interesting information on some characters we've only heard about, and gives Veronica some more dialogue. Gotta love Felicia Day!
* The backstory of the Sierra Madre, and the backstory of all companions (especially Christine).
* The eerie atmosphere, especially in some of the sections of the Sierra Madre, where holograms would play Vera's recorded plead message to Sinclair to be released from the Sierra Madre.
* It has its own ending(s).
* Unique gear.

Cons
Spoiler
* My biggest con is already perfectly described by Kaldhore:

* Also didn't like just reappearing in the BOS bunker without seeing just how you got to the Sierra Madre in the first place. In Fallout 3 DLC you travelled by train tunnel or boat, I would have preferred to see something like that.
* Not being able to return after leaving.

Not so; you can use the half buried trash can by the main gate as a supply dump. When you are ready to leave, take everything and go to the gate. It's only a few steps. The bunker you appear in has plenty of storage or you can use the hollowed out rock just outside. You only have to move overencumbered for a few minutes, if that.

once your are finished with the DLC, you can revisit all locations without having to worry about an explosive collar ;)

Pros: Everything but cons.
Cons: Imba vending machines. Forget G.E.C.K. Those things will bring the world to life.

Speaker-collar thing was perfect. I had to stop and look around for the first time in both games (3 and NV). No more mindless gunning.

I cant believe people are moaning about people moaning about the collar. The point is we did not like this change to the style of the game. Its not that i wasn't able to complete the dlc it just was not fun because its the opposite of what i like about the game. Its way to restrictive and canned for my tastes.
