Dead Money Rocks- A Short Rant by a True Fan

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 3:23 am

I read the early XBOX reviews and I was deadly -haha- pessimistic when I fired it up.

To my great, beautiful gaming surprise, Dead Money is nothing short of masterful and right up there with The Pitt and a step below Point Lookout.

A solid story, great and interesting characters to interact with and a creepy, claustrophobic, self contained world. I *loved* micro managing everything in hardcoe mode and praying I had just enough pork n' beans -not to mention bullets- to down the last few ghost people. The back story is incredibly well done, intense and heartbreaking.

My 10 euros were very well spent, I was highly entertained. Obsidian, my hat's off to you, as long as you keep making them this good, I'll keep buying them :)

But next time, please, less "speakers". By the time I got to the vault, boy, they were getting OLD!

Spamsaving does no good for a game.

I like a game makes me spamsaving, it simply means there is a lot of crap for me to figure out.

I mean, I was so into it that I didn't try all the options in the 1st run.

Exactly!

The speakers served to increase tension, it really helped immerse me in the nightmare. I felt like I was never safe, constantly on edge. A true survival horror experience with a heartbreaking twist.

Absolutely masterful and on par with the best writing in New Vegas. If this DLC is ignored it'll be a crying shame!

Is there a lot of free-roaming in Dead Money, or is it mostly linear?

Mostly linear. In this case it's not a bad thing though, given how the DLC is set up. And there are a lot of nooks and crannies to explore. I, for instance, missed almost all of the weapons mods and the snowglobe.

quick question; can you still leave the casino after opening it? I want to explore mainly because I'm afraid I missed some skillbooks, lol (no spoilers please!)

You are free to explore the Villa and Casino after you are done with the Vault (unless you choose the cocky option).

I hated it but thats my opinion and i don't know how you can even compare it to the Pitt.

Easy,

1st, you are rob of all your equipment for the whole DLC, so only your character can influence the performance you have in the DLC.

2nd, a lot more lethal environment; while the the Pitt is suppose to be bad enough for people to lost skin and prevent reproduction, on the Arena provide slim chance of death.

3rd, no ammo press.

4th, exploration is more rewarding through out the DLC; while collecting ingot would provide you some gear, but you are pretty much set with 20~30 of them.

5th, the quest bring the players to every corner of the map in Dead Money; while in the Pitt there are plenty of places there are purely "cosmetic".

6th, characters. While Asur and Welter(?) are pretty good characters (they are more or less like CL and NCR), they just ain't flush out like characters in Dead Money, I mean even Sinclair have fair share amount of breath and depth.

7th, enemies. Throg VS Ghost people, 'nough said.

8th, spoilers. Although this one is a double edge blade, we should see.

9th, story. Cheers to Chris Avellone.

You can leave the casino itself and explore the resort, but you can't go back to the whole area once you go back to the Mojave Wasteland.

I agree, I just finished it in 5hr 57m and enjoyed every second of it, for 10 bucks that's not a bad deal.

Dog is probably IMO the second best written character in the game, right after Yes Man, although actually I think they might be pretty equally well written. The "Find God(letters backwards) in the simplest of beasts" graffiti infront of the jail is just poetic.

I loved playing it in v.hard/hardcoe, I was rarely at over 50% HP and was constantly looking for food and ammo, it's like all the fun of restarting the game without all the hassle of repeating content or actually restarting your character.

I'm really hoping someone makes a decent mod to make Dog a Mojave companion.

I enjoyed Dead Money, all the companions were great in their own way, particually Dog. Christine was intriguing with being mute, Domino had a bit of charm about him, but was probably the weakest of the 3 characters. Elijah was ok in his role, but in the end I was underwhelmed as he never really felt COMPLETELY psychopathic. A lot of the game I was below 25% health and I enjoyed struggling for survival plenty of times and although frustrating, figuring ways to pass some speaker areas was fun.

Overall I enjoyed it, it's just of a shame you can't revisit afterwards.

I loved it. I think it was the best DLC in a Fallout game, just because of the amazing writing and how the design works. Though I liked the style of Point Lookout, Dead Money ended up being more enjoyable. Plus, it was much less linear than I expected.

Dead money was amazing story was good really started 2 excell gala event onwards better than i thought but it had little annoyances like spaming radios they got very annoying and when you first talk to christene the text will say she rolls her eyes and shakes her head but she just stands still and the ending was good but some what predictable especially father ellijah.

I bought and played it for 11+ hours because when I first played Ghost People scared the hell out of me, especially since I was drunk and it was 1:00 in the morning.

The Ghost People are scary as hell. Altough, I'm such a gigantic wussy even the swampfolk scared me sometimes.

Just finished Dead Money about an hour ago, btw. The best Fallout DLC so far. :celebration:

So, I just finished Dead Money in about 6.5 hours. I should probably say that I'm not big on mazes and jumping puzzles, nor do I like timed events, and I found those aspects of DM highly annoying. I found the story hard to believe, and the entire thing seems even further removed from the PA setting than NV is.

That said, I thought that the location was well done and interesting. There is a good deal of area to explore, and there are reasons to explore. it was a bit of a challenge, even without the annoying tricks. Melee characters should rejoice. Interesting new weapons, with the energy weapon being my favorite. Although the main story arc was a bit over the top, I did enjoy the sub-stories presented by notes and terminal entries.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and I consider it to be worth the price. i would hope, though, that the next DLC is more open, more sandbox, and less linear.

I'll give it 8/10.

How? It actually made you extremely happy to have little things like Stims, and there are environmental hazards and the whole area seems pretty damn hopeless.

My opinion is "Wow!". I think this is the best DLC i've ever bought. Location visually was excellent, the environmental hazards combined with the ghost people made for some very interesting fights, especially with health being drained constantly, the new guns, though few, are a nice new additions i'll put in good use in (IWS + AWOP modded ;)) Mojave. And throwable mines, i've wanted those since Fallout 3 :celebration: And the characters, dialogue and storyline, marvelous. Excellent job, you can consider rest of NV DLCs sold too.
