Dead money: why does it get so much hate?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:56 pm

I've done Dead money some days ago, and i personally enjoyed it alot. The whole feel of the place, and the lack gear at the beggining, the idea of the bomb collars, all of that imo added for a nice change of pace, and immersion, and for the first time in the game, actually made me count the ammo i was carrying, and the characters were nice, especially dog/god (and at the end, acess to that sweet holorifle +, and Free chips for future purchases of weapon kits).

But i usually see alot of people bash on this Addon story on many forums, when there's a comparison between addons, it's usually Dead money that gets the lowest praise, and most of the time they say it's not a good DLC.

So i've gone curious and decided to ask, what exactly makes this DLC sub-par to you? Wich aspects of it did you deslike and wich ones you liked?

Also since we're on the topic of addons, i'd like to ask, is there any substancial reward when doing honest hearts? I've yet to do it, only did the intro to see what it looked like, currently doing Old world blues, the rewards on this one are actually a little too helpful... if not over the top.

It's all discussed back and forth right here.

Cause some people don't like the new gameplay mechanics that forces them to adapt.

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I think it basically comes down to RPG players vs FPS players/Bethesda [censored].

Yup. People don't like to think about what they're doing. Dead Money cannot be rushed through. Running and gunning will get you killed. The only thing that really annoys me is no fast travel. I aim to find all Dean's stashes this time too.

It's tedious to some people. And I think because people get mad that all their stuff is taken away.

Can't answer that one, since as far as I'm concerned, Dead Money is the best of the New Vegas DLCs. It's completely different than the "crawl thru new dungeons and kill lots of new monsters and collect lots of uberloot" experience that too many people these days consider standard fare for a DLC. My only complaint about it is the free chips for the vending machine after you finish it, which is essentially an "I WIN!" button as you'll have access to unlimited stimpaks, ammo, doctor's bags, weapon repair kits, etc. for the rest of the game (and yes, I know you don't have to use them, but still). The Holorifle alone is enough reason to buy the DLC.

Also since we're on the topic of addons, i'd like to ask, is there any substancial reward when doing honest hearts? I've yet to do it, only did the intro to see what it looked like, currently doing Old world blues, the rewards on this one are actually a little too helpful... if not over the top.

Honest Hearts gives you the most spectacular scenery you'll find in a Fallout game, plus some great new weapons for Guns and Melee characters. It also contains the best in-game story in all of New Vegas (the Survivalist). Having said that, I found some of the main characters to be somewhat underdeveloped, but it was still overall a very solid DLC, better than all of the Fallout 3 ones except for Point Lookout and The Pitt.

Out of all of them, Old World Blues is my least favorite. It's just tedious with the non-stop, spawn-right-on-top-of-you mobs of bullet sponges, the trying too hard to go for teh lulz, the repetitive trips through the high school and office simulations, etc. It does give you some very nice weapons, though.

That's pretty much the case from what I've gathered too. If was made just another minisandbox to run around freely and worrilessly instead of how it was made, I guess the "haters" would've liked it better (I, though, know I wouldn't have).

I have no idea why people hate on Dead Money. I loved the challenge provided, considering it was the first challenge I felt in the game.

Ever tried taking on the Radscorpion Gulch at lvl 1-3?
I ran out of there laughing like a maniac out of fear because of a dozen scorpions chasing me.
It was awesome. :)

People don't like having to actually get a strategy. It used to be where you could just run in, kill something with the awesome gun you got on the last DLC, and then leave with awesome loot. Now that you have to actually think and not just run around people are mad because they got complacent. They don't have 1000 Stimpaks and an Anti-Materiel rifle with explosive rounds. Then there are the ghost people which are actually really cool to me, but because everyone shoots at the torso and they don't chop anything off. There is a reason they have a cosmic knife almost from the beginning. They were warned it would be hard and THEY WERE TOLD THEY WOULD NOT KEEP THEIR STUFF BEFORE THE DLC, but they did it any way and said it was the game's fault they couldn't adjust to a different style of game. It is my second favorite DLC ( LR is numbero uno) because it has an awesome story and tried something different which I personally loved.

Primm Pass at level 3 had the same results... except I wasn't running for very long.

"Oh, cool, a shortcut to Novac! I'll just walk through-- O [censored]! O [censored]! O sh--"
[gets killed by deathclaw]

The second playthrough was when I learned that shortcuts are not worth it. :D

As for why people don't like Dead Money?
Either A.) they're bad at it or B.) they simply don't like the kind of challenge that it offers.

They didn't like Dead Money because they didn't take Dean Domino's advice about taking it slow. I'm in the process of replaying Dead Money, and when I got to DD I asked him for tips on how to survive. It's like an instruction manual the devs put in to make sure you understood that Dead Money was a different kind of experience. Dean even says not go running blindly into areas.

I did run down there once at that range, but the radscorps followed me to Good Springs and slaughtered everyone.

Primm Pass was a doozy, luckily some Legion assassins came by at the perfect time and distracted the Deathclaw long enough for me to kill it.

Search for Let's Play vids of it, you'll see why.

There's plenty of idiots who hear beeping and their reaction is to stand IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM and spin around going "UUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" until their head explodes. Then they call Dead Money "stupid trial-and-error bull****."
Part of it I think is the attitude. If you play Dead Money and make an attempt to NEVER die, it's the most thrilling experience ever. If you TREAT IT like trial-and-error, don't fear death and just run every direction until you finally get it right, yeah it's gonna be boring.

Dead Money challenges your mind. I mean, if you solve a rubix cube by putting thought into it, it'll definitely be more fun than solving it by spinning it randomly.
Sadly it seems that the majority of the population hates using their minds...

Out of all of the pro comments, I have to agree with Loneknife the most.

It is always more of a mind challenge than a FPS.

If there's one thing that's been warming my heart lately on these forums, it's that for the past few months, Dead Money has been seeing a lot more love than ever before. Is it because the haters have finally shut up, or because many are really beginning to see its intrinsic value? I really hope it's the latter.

Makes me hope that in the future, not only will New Vegas be more fondly remembered than most other Bethesda-esque RPGs of this generation, but that among its DLCs, DM will be considered a well thought-out and brilliantly designed expansion that everything else should aspire to.

I loved it since I booted it up. So I'm neither I guess.

So did I, but for a time, people like us were a minority. Or at least that's how it seemed.

This reminds me of the DM ign review. Specifically the guy said that one part was near impossible, referring to the hologram part at the vault, and that one mistake equalled death or something. In truth of course, it isn't that hard, just take your time and scan your surroundings.

I'll admit, solving that hologram maze in the Madre was tricky at first. With some patience it can be done rather easily.

I enjoyed DM, it forced me to think and play in a style different to what I was normally comfortable with which made it a good challenge.

My main gripe with it is that you can't re-visit it once you're done, unlike the other DLC areas. I can't see any justification for that. I'd have liked to have been able to go back and complete my exploration after a break from it....

It would get far less "bashing" if less 12yr olds bought it expecting a run n' gun playthrough.
DM (imo) focuses more on adapting to a new situation and story. If you head into it expecting to skip all the dialoge then of course your gunna hate it. I myself have nothing but love for DM.

you would have to be a genius to "randomly" solve a rubix cube that is based on an algorithm. i mean...right?
