Deadliest Warrior of Oblivion: Sons of Skyrim Tournament

Post » Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:27 pm

How the hell ...? It did not look like Crazy Jim was doing much damage to Gregnak! At least not more than Gregnak was doing as well. How the hell is Crazy Jim so unbeatable?!?

damage reflect gear... so 45% of Gregnak's damage was reflected back at himself

I think the artifact items should be given to each person who wants it or not given to anyone at all. There are not enough artifacts to make substitutions viable.

No, Crazy Jim had only 10% Reflect Damage in the fights until now. He will only have 45% Reflect Damage in his final match against Kjelhe.

Crazy Jim's stats in his fight with Gregnak:
235 health
362 magicka
300 fatigue
59 AR + 10% Reflect Damage
50% Resist Magic + 50% Spell Absorption
16 weapon damage + 20 fire damage

Gregnak's stats:
250 health
212 magicka
315 fatigue
68 AR
25% Resist Magic + 50% Spell Absorption
22 weapon damage + 20 shock damage

When Jim hits Gregnak he does 5,12 damage + 7,5 fire damage (on average). When Gregnak hits Jim he does 9,02 damage + 5 shock damage and takes 2 damage. altogether Crazy Jim does 12,62 damage per hit while Gregnak does 14,02 damage to Jim and 2 damage to himself so we'll count that as 12,02 damage to Jim. Now consider that Jim's weapon is 25% faster and that Spell Absorption is essentially random so luck is a factor.

Edit: I don't have time right now, but if anyone wants they can count the hits in the fights. When Jim glows yellow he absorbed the enchantment and when he gets the shock damage particles he didn't. Gregnak on the other glows purple when he absorbs an enchantment and has the fire effect on him when he doesn't. No particle effect = no hit.

I hope Kjelhe wins but Crazy Jim probably will. He's just too good- maybe Crazy Jim is actually a daedric prince!

I think another tournament where Crazy Jim has to face off against everyone would be good. Someone must be able to defeat him!! :D

I tried counting the number of absorbtions vs. hits.

Match 1: Crazy Jim absorbed 10 of 14
Gregnak absorbed 5 of 10

Match 2: Crazy Jim absorbed 6 of 8 (he absorbed the first 6 hits in a row)
Gregnak absorbed 5 of 11

Match 3: Crazy Jim absorbed 9 of 14
Gregnak absorbed 2 of 10

Looking back, it seems like Gregnak should have won the first round, seeing as how he 1 less absorbtion but overall took less hits. I think that is because sometimes Crazy Jim does a move where he slashes twice in quick succession, and its hard to count. I think he hit Gregnak a few more times in match 1.

Also, Crazy Jim got very lucky with the whole absorbtion thing :)

No surprises in the grand finale. I checked Crazy Jim's health after the fight and he still had 200 health left. Very clear winner. And this post turned out to be rather ironic: ;)

A daedric mace will be a fine substitution for Nerveshatter. I think it will be okay using artifacts. What I'm hoping (praying actually) is that Kjelhe will get some lucky disarms and knockdowns, and my dremora will be a distraction. Also, since Kjelhe has an endurance of 100 and high fatigue, I'm hoping that Kjelhi might knock him down from lack of fatigue.

I remember when Hairdo was doing his deadliest NPC contest, during the fight of the Gray Prince vs. Umaril, where the Gray Prince was the huge underdog, he managed to disarm Umaril's sword and then proceeded to butcher him.

The match for the third place hower, did surprise me. I expected Gregnak to score a decisive victory, yet it was Vandir that won. But it that last fight of the match was extremely close. I checked and Vandir had only 3 health left. One less reflect and Gregnak would have won that fight and possibly the match. Speaking of reflecting, Vandir was very lucky in that regard. I didn't count but I'm pretty sure he reflected the enchantment back at Gregnak on a lot more than 30% of the hits.

Aw man, Kjelhe lost, though I shouldn't be surprised. I do think that if he had managed to disarm Crazy Jim (rather than vice versa) than I would have at least won one round. Speaking of which, has anyone even won one round against Crazy Jim?

I'm also not really like two handed weapons, because I think they slow down attacking too much.

I might make a build similar to Crazy Jim for Skyrim. That guy is insane.
Although, if it wasn't for the reflects and disarms, Kjelhe was looking pretty good in the first fight,

Rather than trying to make a class that is close to Crazy Jim, I'm thinking about creating someone who drains fatigue from their opponent. For offense, they would either use hand to hand, which if fairly weak and doesn't drain too much fatigue, or a magic weapon, which would do more damage and drain more fatigue, but could be blocked by spell absorbtion/etc.

Yes, I am going to make another of these, though I will take a bit of a break first. The theme of the next one will be "Who can beat Crazy Jim?" the rules for character creation will be the same as this time around but I'm thinking about revising the rules for the tournament after that. Oblivion itself is rather poorly balanced because it's a single player game and you don't really need all characters to be equally strong, but the tournaments are a sort of multiplayer mode so balance between races and birthsigns becomes a lot more important. To that end I've added a poll. I'm considering making certain balance changes, but on the other hand I'd also like the characters in the tournament to be as close to the ones people are actually palying. So I'd like some input from the people who wil lactually be submiting characters to fight in the arena.

It's much more important to have balance than to have the game purely vanilla. It'd be more entertaining to have various types of characters involved in the tournaments - we've had one or two archers and one or two mages out of 32 contestants - and it should also be a priority to diminish overly potent builds. Otherwise we'll be seeing 30 Crazy Jim's and two people who are basically sacrificing their chances to make for variety.

Well, that's my case. :P

If I make changes, the first one will be to give both Heavy and Light Armor skills the same governing attribute, the second one will be to tone down the power of the Atronach birthsign, and the third will be to balance the resistances to magic, poison, and the elements of all the races.

In other news, I also found where you can make new combat styles in the CS. There are settings for things like acrobatic dodge, favoring ranged weapons, the distance at which you switch from ranged to melee weapon, how often you do power attacks, which power attacks you use, how does the chance to make power attacks change if your enemy is knocked down or staggered, and more.

Very interesting. This could come in handy in making characters more balanced, especially ranged ones.

I've seen that before, myself when I tried making a custom combat system for my own custom companion NPC. Unfortunately I don't know how to make good use of it as I quite often find the Oblivion Default AI package more effective across the board. I've thought of perhaps duplicating that AI package and making a few of my own tweaks. Alas, I cannot find that AI package to work on.

Also part of the reason I asked if I could use the guard AI package in the next tourney.

Wow, that was a VERY close match I was in there. :o

I'll probably be taking part in the next tournament if I can, balance is definitely an issue and I like that you're looking to balance it out so that people who make varied and interesting classes aren't steam rolled by some of the 'Crazy Jim' characters. I think that I'll stick with Vandir with some minor changes and tweaks depending on how you balance things, looking forward to the next set of engagements. :D

I vote for things to try to be balanced out for characters next time, should be an interesting change.

I think for the next tourny I will roll out one of my archer characters and give Trannigan a break for a while.

You'll get your chance for that. Deadliest Warrior of Oblivion: The Ten Trial of Crazy JIm is still going to be without the balance tweaks. The tweaks only come into play in the tournament after that. Speaking of the tweaks, here's what I've come up with:

RACES

Altmer: 50 Fortify Magicka
Argonian: 100% Resist Poison
Bosmer: starts the fight invisible (should result in 1 free attack)
Breton: 20% Resist Magic
Dunmer: 60% Resist Fire
Imperial: 60% Resist Shock
Khajiit: 150 Fortify Fatigue
Nord: 60% Resist Frost
Orc: 30 Fortify Health
Redguard: 25 Fortify Health, 25 Fortify Fatigue

BIRTHSIGNS

Apprentice: 100 Fortify Magicka, 20% Weakness to Magic
Atronach: 20% Spell Absorption, 200 Fortify Magicka, Stunted Magicka
Lady: 30 Fortify Health
Lord: 5 Restore Health for 10 seconds on self (lesser power)
Lover: Paralyze for 3 seconds on touch (lesser power)
Mage: 50 Fortify Magicka
Ritual: 20% Resist Magic
Serpent: 5 Damage Health for 10 seconds on touch (lesser power)
Shadow: 100% Chameleon for 3 seconds on self (lesser power)
Steed: 150 Fortify Fatigue
Thief: 20 Fortify Luck
Tower: 15% Reflect Damage
Warrior: 25% Shield

SKILLS

Athletics is governed by Endurance
Heavy Armor is governed by Speed
