Deadly Reflex or Unneccessary Violence?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:36 pm

I just read about the Deadly Reflex mod (version 6 hopefully released sometime soon) and the Unneccessary Violence mod, and both appear to do the same thing- make the combat much more dynamic, varied, and brutal. Both look awesome. So, if anyone has experience with each or with either, can you weigh in on what factors would lead to choosing one over the other? I'm thinking that stability, ease of use, and more or less hardware intensive are the main factors. Again, both mods look awesome, so there's no implication that one is "better" than the other.

I use and prefer deadly reflex. In dr you can decapitate a person in half, chop off their hands and watch em bleed. You can crush their skulls and watch their brains fly out. Take off a persons head. Dont know anything about uv but i love deadly reflex. As you see in this pic things can get messy with deadly reflex.

Well I wrote UV to expand the combat in my own game, and I've always used Deadly Reflex. The intention was that they should run side by side since they affect different parts of the combat system. I'd probably recommend agains using the old UV as its quite buggy, but there will be a new version along shortly, wich of course i'd recommend - and as I said, I'd recommend using it together with DR.

Oh cool! Didn't realize I could run both. Looking forward to DR6 and the new UV very very much. Any considerations to keep in mind when using both, like altering any aspect of the install, etc?

Well, since I don't know the full feature list of DR6, its possible there may be some overlap with the new versions, however I'm pretty confident they won't directly conflict. UVII has an extensive INI that will let you switch off any features you don't want - something DR traditionally hasn't had (I can't say whether that will be the case with the new one) but if there's anything they both do, just turn those things off with UV.

A couple factors come to mind, which may or may not be important to you.

I skipped out on DR partly because I sometimes play with my little brother and sister watching, and the level of gore is not so family-friendly. :P

UV and DR are compatible, but UV has a much higher emphasis on compatibility than DR does. DR, by all accounts, must load dead last to function. If you have other mods with the same requirement you may encounter issues.

I like DR and I've always used it. Sadly, DR6 is taking a bit of the same fame as Duke Nukem Forever...has been long in development, and still no news about it :(

Maybe we could rename DR6 to "DRF"? :D

Actually this is NOT required with v5, even BOSS doesn′t put it last. I run it last myself, so that′s where I can guarantee it to work like it does for me, but technically I can′t think of any reason it speciafically HAS to be last.

The 'taking action' trailers for UV II completely blew my mind  (don't we need a new thread for that?) The only thing not carried over from Deadly Reflex is spell-crits. No disrespect to Skycaptain of course  DR continues to be awesome in it's own right, and I never get tired of using frost spells to crit bunnies :chaos:
