Dealiest Warrior Tournament: The Ten Trials of Crazy Jim

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 12:50 pm

We have 10 fighters, entries are closed.

INTRODUCTION

His name is Crazy Jim and he leaves no one alive, ever.

That sort of behaviour will not win you many friends, but it will get you many enemies. Crazy Jim didn't mind though. As far as he was concerned winning fights was better than winning friends. But there were a lot of people who did mind, friends and family of the ones he had butchered. And 10 of these enemies came together and decided that Crazy Jim simply had to die and they would make it happen.

They challenged Crazy Jim to a series of 10 duels and if he lost it meant his death. Crazy Jim gladly accepted, it had been a while since he got to kill anyone and his blade thirsted for blood.

Some of you may be wondering what a Deadliest Warrior Tournament is all about. Basically the contestants tell me what their characters are like, I recreate the characters as NPCs, they fight it out in the arena, and I record the fights and upload them to Youtube. Here are links to the previous torunaments:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1090766-deadliest-warrior-your-character-in-oblivion/
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1092482-second-deadliest-warrior-oblivion-tournament

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1150863-deadliest-warrior-of-oblivion-sons-of-skyrim-tournament/

This one is going to be a little different because it's going to be composed of 10 matches of Crazy Jim vs the challengers.

RULES

The rules section is rather long so I put it in spoiler tags. Click on the spoiler buton to show/hide the detailed rules. At the end there is the tl;dr version.

1. ORGANISATION OF THE TOURNAMENT

Spoiler
1.1 Participation

The first 10 people who submit a valid character that fits the rules get to participate in the tournament.

1.2 Time of submission

If you edit the post in which you submited your character I will count the time of editing as the time you submited your character. This means that placeholder posts will do you no good and while you may edit your character as often as you like before the tournament starts you should be careful that your edit doesn't make you into the officially 17th person who subimted a character. It's best to get it right the first time. ;)

1.3 Multiple characters

You can submit multiple characters, but each one has to be submited in a separate post. Any characters beyond the first will only get to participate in the tournament if less than 16 people enter. Note that the first character is the one with the earlier time of submission. So if you submit two characters the one you edited last will be the second one.

1.4 The tournament

The tournament is composed of 10 matches against Crazy Jim. If you somehow manage to beat him, you're a winner. If you don't beat him, you're dead.

Characters will take the form of autocalculated NPCs under AI control. Their level will be set to 26. This means that without counting the bonus you get from race your major skills will be 67 or 50, depending on whether they are in your specialization or not. This means that most of your major skill will be Journeyman rank, which is especially important for spellcasters.

2. CHARACTERS

Spoiler
2.1 You submit your character using the following form:

Name:
Gender:
Race:
Birthsign:
Appearance:
Class:
Specialization:
Favored attributes:
Major skils:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Magic item budget:
Total magic item value:
Weapons:
Shield:
Armor/clothes:
Amulet:
Ring:
Alchemy items:
Spells:
AI Combat Style:

2.2 Name, race, and bithsign
You can only use the 10 vanilla races and 13 vanilla birthsigns. Note: Fortified Endurance from birthsigns and enchantments has no effect on NPC health. Because of that I am changing the effect of the Lady and the Warrior birthsign to give 40 Fortify Health instead of 10 Fortify Endurance.

2.3 Apperance

Specify desired hairstyle, hair color, eye color, and unusual skin color (if applicable). Vanilla options only.

2.4 Class

Fill out the information about your class.

2.5 Magic item budget

This is the gold you have available to buy magic items for your character. The default budget is 5000 gold but certain skills and character choices can increase it.

The following skills always provide 1000 extra gold to your budget, if you have them as major skills:
- Armorer
- Blade
- Blunt
- Hand-to-hand
- Marksman
- Mercantile
- security
- Sneak
- Speechcraft

The following major skills can provide 1000 extra gold, but only if you choose to forfeit their normal benefit:
- Alteration (if you choose open as your magic effect)
- Heavy Armor (if you don't select a free suit of heavy armor)
- Illusion (if you choose Invisibility as your magic effect)
- Light Armor (if you don't select a free suit of light armor)

2.6 Weapons

Specify which magic weapons your character is using (this includes staves).

You can buy a magic weapon with the gold from your magic item budget. You can choose these from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Weapons.

If you are not using armor you can buy a staff, which you can choose from among http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Staves. Limitation: the staff can't be worth more than 1000 gold and you can't get a staff that uses any of the following magic effects: Calm, Command Humanoid, or Command Creature.

If you do not select any magic melee weapons you can get a free Silver Dagger.

2.7 Armor

If you have Heavy Armor as a major skill you can get a free full suit of heavy armor or increase your magic item budget by 1000 gold.

If you have Light Armor as a major skill you can get a free full suit of light armor or increase your magic item budget by 1000 gold.

The exact choice of this free armor is aesthetic. All heavy armor will be adjusted to have the stats of Ebony armor and all light armor will be adjusted to have the stats of Glass armor. You are encnouraged to come up with an unique look that will distinguish you from the other competitors. You can choose from any armor in unmodded Oblivion except artifacts. Armor from DLCs is not available.

2.8 Shield, Amultet, and Ring

After purchasing weapons you can use what is left of your magic item budget to buy a shield, amultet, and/or ring from among Oblivion's http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Apparel. You can have 1 shield, 1 amultet, and 1 ring. This is because NPCs never equip more than 1 of these items.

2.9 Alchemy items

If you have Alchemy as a major skill you can buy 200 gold worth of potions and poisons from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Potions.

2.10 Spells

You can select one magic effect from each magic skill that is a major skill for your character. You must also specify whether the spell effect is on target, on target area, on touch, or on self. You will then be given the best possible http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Spells that you can cast. As the tournament progresses and yur characters level and skills increase weaker spells will get replaced by stronger ones.

Conjuration is a special case because the various summoned creatures are not the same spell effect. To simplify things you can choose between "Summon Daedra" and "Summon Skeleton" as magic effect. Summoned Daedra is Scamp at Apprentice levels, Dremora at Journeyman level, and Daedroth at Expert level. The summoned Skeleton is a Skeleton at Apprentice level, a Skeleton Guardian at journeyman level, and a Skeleton Champion at Expert level.

In the previous tournament it was also found to be overpowered because the NPCs always attacked the summoned creature instead of the summoner. Because of that I will try to mod the spells in such a way that they can only be used once. But if I fail to do that summoning spells will be prohibited and you will get a +1000 gold bonus to your magic item budget instead.

If you have Mysticism as a major skill you can select "extra spell" as your magic effect for Mysticism. This allows you to select one additional spell effect for another magic skill. For example a mage can normally only select one of Fire Damage (on target) and Shock Damage (on target), but if he picks "extra spell" as his Mysticism spell effect he can select both types of damage. This rule allows you to swap your Mysticism spell for a spell from another school of magic.

If you have Alteration as a major skill you can increase your magic item budget by 1000 gold instead of selecting one Alteration spell. This simulates picking Open as your magic effect and using Alteration as an alternative to Security.

If you have Illusion as a major skill you can increase your magic item budget by 1000 gold instead of selecting one Illusion spell. This simulates picking Invisibility/Chameleon as your magic effect and using Illusion as an alternative to Sneak. You can still select Invisibility to use it in combat, but then you don't get 1000 gold for it. Personally I think the gold would do you more good because the AI svcks at stealth, but it's your choice.

Chameleon spells are not allowed. Your skill is too low to cast anything that will protect you from th AI so they would only make it harder to follow the fight when I record it.

2.11 AI Combat Style

The available combat styles are Default, DefaultArcher, NPCCnjurer, and custom.

Default is the combat style of most NPCs in the game. This combat style seems to involve engaging the enemy in melee and casting spells from time to time.

DefaultArcher is the combat style used by NPC archers. It involves trying to keep a distance from your enemy and shooting him with a bow. However, if the enemy comes too close this style will pull out a melee weapon and engage in close combat.

NPCConjurer is the style used by conjurers and necromancers. Well, technically necromancers use their own style, but I've looked at them and they are both the same.

Finally, you can request a customized style. The default combat style looks like http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a313/dragatus/CS_combat_style.jpg and you can request tweaks. For example if you're going to enter a Dunmer Warrior and you'll have Expert Blade skill you might ask for a combat style in which all power attacks are disarming side power atatcks.

Note: if you have Acrobatics as a major skill, I will give you a combat style that has acrobatic dodge enabled.

3. RULES SUMMARY

In case that was too long for you to read, here is the tl;dr version:

Copy the form from the beginning of 2. Characters and fill it out. You can only use vanilla options (no modded races or birthsigns or items). You can't use any custom items, but you get 5000 gold to spend on buying weapons from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Weapons and apparel from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Apparel. Some skills (such as Mercantile and Sneak) can increase your budget by 1000 gold each. You can only choose one spell effect for each school of magic that you have as major skill. You only get to use standard spells with only one magic effect.

Note that the summary is just that, a summary. I still expect participants to read the long version.

4. RULES CHANGES

I have made some alterations from the previous tournaments. Here is an overview for the veterans:
- No more free weapons. Weapon skills simply give 1000 gold and you have to buy a magic weapon from your budget.
- The free armor comes without a shield. If you want a shield you have to buy it extra from your magic item budget.
- You can have only 1 ring. This is because I have recently discovered that NPCs only equip 1 ring.
- Because the level of characters is fixed at 26 Alchemy defaults to 200 gold for potions and poisons.
- There is a new character form to reflect these changes.

SAMPLE CHARACTER

This is what an entry should look like. It is also what Crazy Jim is like. Study it carefuly because it's a matter of life and death for the character you send into the arena. Note however, that I really don't want anyone to enter an exact clone of Crazy Jim.

Name: Crazy Jim
Gender: male
Race: Breton
Birthsign: Atronach
Appearance: green eyes, green hair, greenish skin
Class: Butcher
Specialization: Combat
Favored attributes: Strength, Endurance
Major skils:
1. Blade
2. Blunt
3. Hand to Hand
4. Heavy Armor
5. Mercantile
6. Restoration
7. Conjuration
Magic item budget: 9000
Total magic item value: 8993gold
Weapons: Crazy Jim's Longsword* (2353)
Shield: Ogre Skin Shield (2500)
Armor/clothes: Ebony Armor, Dwarven Helmet (free because Heavy Armor is a major skill)
Amulet: none
Ring: Ring of Retribution (4140)
Alchemy items: none
Spells: Restore Health (self), Summon Skeleton
AI Combat Style: default

* Crazy Jim's Longsword is a custom item that I'm going to give Jim to prevent people from abusing the Flame Ring (100% Resist fire). In the old tournaments he had a Longsword of the Blaze which was enchanted with 20 Fire Damage. Crazy Jim's Longsword is going to be an Ebony Longsword enchanted with 6 Fire Damage, 6 Frost Damage, and 8 Shock Damage. And no, you can't get it.

Also, to people who followed the previous thread I'd like to stress that his tournament is still vanilla. You get to fight Jim as he was in the previous tournaments.

Yes Esmée, your budget is 8000. However, it could go up to 9000 gold if you choose not to pick any illusion spells.

*Are the birthsigns still altered so this would give me constant reflect damage? If not then I'll take warrior

No, I haven't made the balance changes yet. This tournament is still vanilla.

I'm pretty sure, but not completely, will the Flame Ring negate Crazy Jim's sword, or does it only work for spells?

The Flame Ring works on all sources of Fire Damage. It would even work on poisons that cause Fire Damage. And it is a problematic item because it's so clearly anti-Jim. Using 70% of your magic item budget on an item that would have been useless against 75% of your opponents in a regular tournament feels cheesy to me (although to be honest if I was in your place I'd use it too). So what I'm going to do is I'm going to give Crazy Jim a custom sword that does 6 points of Fire Damage, 6 points of Frost Damage, 8 points of Shock Damage.

Both of you also still need to edit your entries. I've changed the rules somewhat, but I guess I should have made that more clear. Here are the changes:
- No more free weapons. Weapon skills simply give 1000 gold and you have to buy a magic weapon.
- The free armor comes without a shield. If you want a shield you have to buy it extra.
- You can have only 1 ring. This is because I have recently discovered that NPCs only equip 1 ring. This screwed over many characters in previous tournament who used two rings.
- Because the level of characters is fixed at 26 Alchemy defaults to 200 gold for potions and poisons.
- There is a new character form to reflect these changes.

Could I use Umbra even though it's an artifact? I can pay for it :)

Also, how do I get armor without Light or Heavy Armor as a major skill? As cool as mithril looks, if I had to buy armor I would buy Fur because they're all equal.

Edit: Ok, I've been thinking about the character organization, and here's an idea I came up with for how to build them.

Base Gold: 17,000 (enough for full daedric armor and longsword, but nothing else)

Armor, Weapons, and Jewelry
All armor and weapons retain their original stats.
You must purchase purchase the armor and weapons you want, as you start out with nothing
All armor, weapons, jewelry, and potions/poisons are available for purchase (except perhaps artifacts)

Skills
Mercantile gives an extra amount of gold
Speechcraft allows you to refight a match
Acrobatics allows you to dodge
Sneak allows you to be invisible at the beginning allowing you the first strike
Security ???
Alchemy allows 1 (2?) free potion or poision
Everything else doesn't give any bonuses

You can increase your skills for gold (but only up to Expert)

Magic
Choosing a magic skill as a major gives you a free spell in that category
Additional spells of any type can be purchased for gold

However, I have a feeling that this could turn out to be a disaster because of all the powerful weapons available. A naked guy running around with a super sword could potentially win.

If I allow you to use Umbra someone is going to ask me about Goldbrand or Volendrung. I can however make your sword look like Umbra. And maybe when the tournament is over I will run a bonus match where Barahir gets the real Umbra. Maybe.

Also, how do I get armor without Light or Heavy Armor as a major skill?

You don't. If you want armor, you need one of the armor skills. I would suggest replacing Alteration with Light Armor, it keeps the character generally intact. The "real" Barahir probably had a decent Light Armor skill anyway.

Edit: In response to your suggestion for 17,000 gold. This tournament is still going to have the rules as they are now, but I'll consider it for the next one. You could always host a tournament of your own though. ;)

Yeah, I plan to, once mid-term exams are over in a few weeks.

Also, about the shield. Do the shields retain their original stats? I assume so because it would be pointless to buy anything other than fur.

Yes, shields retain their original stats. They always did, which is why I amde this change. Under the old rules a person could buy a Fur shield and actaully weaken their character. This way any shield you buy is actually an improvement.

The same applies to every other part of enchated armor, it keeps the original stats. You are supposed to get whatever enchantment you want on a ring, amulet, or shield. Anything else will replace the armor you're already using and waste your gold (because you pay for both the enchantment and the base item). If it's less than Glass/Ebony quality it will even weaken you and if it is Glass, Ebony, or Daedric quality you'll waste that much more gold because the base item is very expensive.

I am taking a risk by choosing the Guard spell instead of taking a small shield enchant on a ring. Since fights usually last about 30 sec I hope Gurkog casts Guard at the start!

Do the NPC's use racial abilities? If so the 50% physical damage reduction and base 75% spell reduction.... means I should make a breton :P

@ Esmée
Please fill out your character quickly. I am accepting the first 10 people who enter a valid character. So if 10 people enter valid characters before you fill out the rest of your form you won't be able to participate.

@ TheNord
Looks fine. Also thank you for having an easy to spell name.

@ Halperin
Barahir looks good.

@ Broken Scale
Jane looks very much like Jim's twin sister. I thought you said you'd make her totally different. ;) She looks fine though.

@Gurkog
No shield?

@Ni!
Looking good. Let's just hope your frost spell doesn't do more damage to your Dremora than to Jim. ;)

@John123
Nobody is getting any artifacts. ;) And if you aren't taking any Illusion spells your budget is 8000. Looks good otherwise.

I said I'd make her totally different? I don't remember that. Well, this is the character that can beat Crazy Jim, if anyone can. Jane was designed with that goal in mind. :toughninja: :chaos: :gun:

Yes, of course they use racial abilities. It's just the racial greater powers that are questionable. And to answer the other question, NPC do use Shield spells at the start of combat.

The rules are a bit different. I posted a summary towards the end of the original post. The only change for your character though is that the free suit of armor no longer comes with a shield. If you want a shield you have to buy it extra from your magic item budget.

Hope I got it right. Thanks.

It does, doesn't it. :D

Your character looks fine, though I have some doubts concerning the efficiency of your armor choice. It's all Fur armor so your AR will be pretty low.

Silly me just noticed this time how the shield spell in alteration is worth the 1000g loss :P

EDIT: if any bretons want to exploit the games [censored] spell stacking you can take alteration and the shield spell stacks with your racial... giving you 80% or 95% shield for 30 seconds depending on spec...... no reason to make any other race I guess HINT do this with the jane character! With ogre skin shield you have 100% shield, easy /cry

EDIT2: I realize now that my orc will have 50% less stamina drain from armor, knockdown power attack, and shield bash on block which bretons can not get at level 26 of this tourney. I guess it can pay to be green sometimes!

Pray to the Nine Divines.
I also presume this means that you can edit the Combat AI so Yurkig can spellcast more often?
