Dear Bethesda & Obsidian, I hope you learned a valuable

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 2:36 pm

To all who will read this,

From reading these forums, I have come to see that we are a passionate fan base and I have to say that I really like both FO3 and FONV for their strengths (Great games overall).

So, I would like to mention something that I hope is constructive: I think that the next Fallout game should be done with both companies directly involved in developing the game.

The reason I say this is that I've seen many threads where people love either FO3 or FONV better. So that got me thinking about how great it would be if the next game in the series was co-developed by both!

I can imagine roaming another seemingly vast world like in FO3 with all of the fun elements and story choices found in FONV.

I'd go as far as to say that bringing together the best of both games in one epic game would be AWESOME!

Sincerely,

An avid fan
(hoping that he posted this topic in the right place)

Agreed. Bethesda world creation and Obsidian writing would make an excellent combination.
Maybe it would knock Bioware off their high perch?

It would be an awesome tag team. Bethesda with its "Wow" moments and Obsidian with the game mechanics that make you say "Wow". I endorse this proposal.

There is a certain logic to this idea. I think they'd have to pay per view the meetings between the developers though. That could be entertaining :P

I've had this same thought several times reading these forums. I think a collaboration between the two companies that allowed each to focus on their strengths would result in something pretty magical.

As long Bethesda doesn't let its ugly hands near the writing or quest design. And while we're at it, let some Obsidian writers contribute to TESV.

I thought this would just be a complaining thread, but an idea like that actually has me intrigued.

I can dig this. If you they could find a way to bring all the things people love about Bethesda games together with all the things people love about what Obsidian has done, it's win-win. Sounds easy in a forum post of course, probably a whole other ball game in reality. One can dream!

Let Bethesda design the world, with some pointers from what Obsidian wants, then let Obsidian fill it with quests and dialogue.

And hire the Project Beauty/Dragon Age Redesigned modder guy to make some proper looking faces, and the guy who made Fallout 3 Re-animated for animations, because that's something neither Bethesda or Obsidian gets right. :P

When I first read your title, I was about to enter your thread and write what I thought about complainers.

But now, I agree with your letter! Obsidian could make the sory and quests, while Bethesda makes
funny/annoying characters and does ther world building! If only Bethesda could obtain Obsidian.

Me too!

Or Bethesda could just let Obsidian handle the franchise henceforth, either way works. I just want to not wait five years for the next game only to get another terrible story with no depth, characters, or choices. One thing Bethesda has a habit of doing is completely overemphasizing making a shiny new graphics engine and ignoring the actual meat of the game, the plot.

Sure. Let Bethesda focus on crafting the world and nothing else. Obsidian has shown that they destroy Bethesda when it comes to everything else.

Competent testing would go a long way too.

I love both games, but it's like an abusive relationship with NV. You never know when things are about to go south.

That all sounds great and all that, but the sad truth is that if this vision was to become reality, it would probably still disappoint most people. Combining two elements with different strengths that, in theory, are supposed to compensate for each other's weaknesses and make a complete result, usually birth something surprisingly far from perfection. But I don't mean to be a buzzkill, I agree that some kind of joint effort from Bethesda and Obsidian could probably result in something very good indeed. I just wanted to point out that while "Bethesda mechanics + Obsidian storylines & interaction" sounds like an unbeatable combination, it's actually just a fantasy that wouldn't turn out like what most people would expect the end result to be.

[EDIT]
And hire the Project Beauty/Dragon Age Redesigned modder guy to make some proper looking faces,

Characters in Dragon Age do look awesome. And while we're tossing around fantastic ideas about combining elements from different games, Dragon Age actually had, in my opinion, the best feeling of playing a character's personality in a long time, especially in dialogues. Too bad the larger scale story still runs pretty much the same course regardless of the character's choices, with just a few superficial differences here and there.

Just like everybody else I entered and expected whines and moans but came out with this

I definitely agree that both games have their strengths over the other. I personally felt like FO3 had a much more beautiful Wasteland with smoother mechanics (even better graphics, strangely enough), however FONV offered quite a bit more freedom and the NPCs reacted more appropriately to the player's actions. Many of you will hate me for saying this, however I found myself feeling like FONV was basically another add-on to Fallout 3 that was just too big to be downloadable. But people take that like it's a bad thing. FONV is still worth its price, no matter how similar it is to FO3. I'm always up for more FO3.

I don't really, personally know the relationship the companies have-as in, I don't know how well they get along with each other. And as others said, I highly doubt it would actually occur.

That said, I've fancied the idea myself for quite a while-and it'd would certainly balance out at least some of the weaknesses and strengths of both sides if done correctly. It'd be even better if they used a nicer engine in whatever game they worked together on. ;]

I agree and if Beth thinks it's a good idea, do it. Obsidian's excellent writing + Beth's excellent worldmaking = magic.
