Dear Bethesda- please attempt to scare the crap out of me.

Post » Sat Sep 18, 2010 9:44 am

For me, it's the noises that scare me the most. Zombies groaning, skeletons creaking, the clickety-click of an angry mudcrab...
Lord knows what sounds the giant spiders will make :bolt:

Fear not Chineapplepunk. There will probably be an equvivalent of bug spray in the game or a repelent stick from Fallout. :)

One I got scared, doing bit of cross country, hearing something behind my character, turned around and see this big Deathcr....... I mean big brown bear going for the killer swipe. That scared me. Jumped out off my chair.

I'm all for the game capturing the scare-the-crap-outta-you essence of dungeons and monsters and such... because then that just adds one more thing to the many awesome things which can happen while you're out exploring.

It's one thing to make a slightly creepy dungeon with ambiance and shadowy corners.

It's another thing to make a dungeon that, as you're walking in through the main entry, the entire entrance you used to get in collapses behind you... leaving you in the pitch darkness without any idea how to get out again. Add in some giant spiders hanging off the ceiling to drop in on your head, a breeze which randomly blows out your torch, and areas of the floor which completely give out from under you as you're exploring... and suddenly that 'creepy' dungeon becomes a nightmarish deathtrap.

Remember... it doesn't have to be survival horror to be scary. We're the Dohvakin, after all. We've got a decent chance of survival.

But that doesn't mean we should never be presented with those jumped-out-of-your-skin moments now and again.

Nothing can put amnesia to shame! Best horror game evar!

I played Amnesia up to the water part. Then I didn't play it anymore. Call me a chicken. :bolt:

You mean the part where you are walking along and then all of the sudden you hear a loud splash and foot steps running towards you in the water and while you can see its foot steps you can't see the creature so you are trying to decide if this is just a bluff or if you should run and then "WHAM!" You die? Yeah that was great.

It actually got worse later on. There are two parts that really creeped me out towards the end. Plus, well I don't want to spoil it if you ever do go back, but I will just say that isn't the last you see of that water creature either. He/she/it is worse the second time around because you think it will be there, but it isn't, so you go about your business, and then it decides to show up.

Want to be scared, but only now and then. Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

That game does get tense. Amensia never made me "jump" but it caused me to have a heighten sense of alertness and due to that I was always paranoid and scared but when something happened I had always been expected it, I just didn't know when it would come. Minecraft on the another hand was nice and peaceful the first day so I wasn't expecting anything bad to happen.... Till I turned around and saw a creeper 2 feet behind me which would literally cause me to jump then start cussing after it took out my house... Damn creepers! :flamethrower:

I also want huge scary creatures lurking in the darkness of the seas around skyrim :D that would scare me more than anything on the mainland

I know where you live... I'll bring the kipper.

Scared now good.

On topic: Beth is great with the visuals and placement of notes, so expect some nice scary places and some salt inducing creatures to pop out at you.
How much I don't know, but the pics I've seen are trying for gritty so hopefully a fair few places and things.

Boooo.

a breeze which randomly blows out your torch

Do you have any idea what kind of elements these torches can withstand. If a torch can still burn in a raging thunderstorm then it will take more than a "breeeze" to blow out a torch soaked in oil.

"some of it should put amnesia to shame"

Not even possible, you can defend yourself in skyrim. The guys who did amnesia are horror experts and imo its the scariest game ever made. The game is revolved around horror, its not just part of it like it could possibly be for skyrim.

But, I do agree, I love horror and skyrim should have some of those elements in it, even if its not scary it adds atmosphere and suspense!

i don't want all of this game to be scary, but some of it should put amnesia to shame.

1: scary music for scary dungeons

2: DARKNESS!!!! (and lighting, disturbing shadows always work)

3: monsters significantly more powefull than the player.

4: scary ambient noise, ramblings of distant characters (like how bioshock did splicers in early levels)

5: monsters getting to the player in interesting ways- for example

-skeletons starting of in piles, and assembling themselves when triggered.
- banshees jumping out and screaming very loudly very near the player
- ghosts and wraiths behaving like ghosts- not glowing things floating around
- monsters making a warning noise, and charging out of the darkness
- completely invisible enemies (seriously- try the amnesia demo on steam- you will never want to go near water again)
- enemies playing dead, or looking like something else (think splicers in bioshock 1)

6: enemies should TAUNT you, they should make extra loud footsteps as they approach your location, or perhaps they should laugh manically . there should be moments when a superior opponent sees you, strolls down to you- and you have to run away, close the door, block the door and hide before it breaks down the door and feasts upon you! they should give portal turret like responses like " are you still there?" where are you" "hello" and whatnot.

7: add random events-
when you sleep around the campfire you built you might be awoken in the middle of the night by the sound of wolves howling in the distance or even something else.
when you sleep in a cave or dungeon you might awake to your enemies face covering your screen as he has just started to inspect you!
when you swim- you better hope that you arent going to be attacked by something dangerous and sneaky (such as a slaughterfish swarm, dreugh, giant sea serpents, water dragons or other monsterous fish
when you cross a frozen lake- you better hope it doesnt belong to the vampires who can swim through the ice without breaking it and may decide to grab you by the ankles and pull you down!
player should be heavily encouraged to stay out of certain areas during a full moon.

I believe you have already talked about this so many times already.

Anyways,I think yes it would be awesome in some dungeons. And its impossible to put Amnesia to shame. Its a master piece.Art.

I prefer being entertained with thrilling gameplay rather than scary gameplay. I avoided amnesia for a reason ;) Even "The Longest Journey" had a couple of really awesome moments that sent chills down my spine... In full daylight. A certain degree of originality would be nice, rather than being scared when you expect to be scared, which actually grows boring rather quickly.

There are some horror themed vaults in fallout 3 and new vegas, maybe there can be some horror themed dungeons in Skyrim.

I'd just like to see ultra-abstract creatures, nothing else like attempts at making things more 'scary' by using unexpected attacks of creatures or 'stressful' music. Something abstract, more like this:

Dear god, no! Please no, its horrifying.

Lighting helps a lot with scariness, and maybe shadowy figures/creatures stalking/lurking in the dark, instead of all of them jumping at you right away when they find you. Now after reading this thread I want to check out Amnesia.

This.

What, like a screamer (the Maze flash game)? No thanks.

Zombies and eerie dungeons is enough, and we know those will be in. This is an RPG, not a horror game, and we don't really need to crap our pants in every dungeon we explore.

I would like to be scared in undead dungeons. I exploring caves and ruins beneath the earth, filled to the brim with all sorts of unholy horrors would be pretty terrifying... and that would add to the whole exploration aspect.

Considering the scariest thing in oblivion was the voice acting i don't think it'll be to hard for them step it up, but you have to take into account it isn't a 'survival' game, in the last few elder scroll's they always given you advantage of feeling like the powerful hunter when going through caves/dungeons so i doubt that will change.

some dungeons, like caves should be scary, i think there should be at least a couple scare you pants of places, like some house in the middle of nowhere that looks innocent enough, but harbors dark secrets.

and nighttime travel should be a bit unnerving
