Dear Bethesda, thank you for Dogmeat

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2016 9:29 am

I know some people trade him out as soon as possible, but I've consistently gone back to the pup during my travels in Fallout 4. Owning a GSD myself, it really does a good job in portraying that intelligent and independent breed. Very early on in more focused moments, I caught myself multiple times beginning to say, "Stay over here, Moose." as Dogmeat starts to stray ahead or wander. From the restless whining to the tip tapping of dog nails on floors, it all just screams authentic.

Your time and effort in Dogmeat really paid off, at least for me, so thank you.

P.S. It has also managed to remind me to love my real bub and make sure he gets plenty of attention, too.

Agreed. They did a great job on Dogmeat!

My only problem with him as of late is; anything he snatches up & drops by my feet disappears as soon as it hits the ground :(

Brought him to a dangerous mission and i must say he was more helpful than humans because he'll stop crazy enemy from shooting.

He needs to stop pretending he is a cat, and stop trying to rub his scent off onto my legs while I am trying to walk.... Especially in tight quarters...... I would like to be able to command him to stay two steps behind me, and to my right.... but, that didn't crop up in the available commands....

I recommend you beware of the ethically-challenged individual on these very forums, who tells anyone who will listen to "shoot Dogmeat until he falls. Then give him a Stimpak."

This is his strategy for increasing the affection of player companions...

Makes me extremely upset (and I wish he would be moderated).

I love DM too! And he is based on a real dog. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/meet-the-real-world-inspiration-for-fallout-4s-dog/1100-6430764/

I hate it, why did they put their stupid clean purebred pet into my post apocalypse? Every other dog model in the game is more appropriate.

It's just such mindless vanity, they spent all that time capturing the look of their dog and did zero work on the dog scripting itself which had all the bugs from f3 up until the last update.

I wonder if thats why clothing was half baked they wasted so many resources on putting the boss's dog in.

A lot of work has been put into Dogmeat, I can tell. He runs out infront of you when traveling like a real dog does, his animations are all mocapped from a real dog rather than hand animated like before. And those animations have a lot of interactions with the scenery, bringing him up to the same level as a humanoid NPC character with the idle markers instead of how it was before with a creature that just stands in place and pants, sometimes falling into the floor.

Ill still never use him, don't like companions, but he is a damn fine pet to have wandering around Boston Airport. Wish I could bring him up on the Prydwen with me, but ill be moving away when the modding tools come anyways.

he really is the most useful companion. I just started using Strong, and my gawd! that guy is useless (dialog is awesome)! "Strong hold down button on minigun until all 1000 rounds you gave me gone." while hitting nothing!

He is the real reason how I could play vanilla FO4 for over 500 hours. lol

He is very well made and extremely helpful.

The best thing about him is he runs in front of you all the time giving you the real sense of companionship.

People whom complain about him do not understand how dogs behave and cannot even control one dog in a game.

And I can`t ignore Dogmeat :) It`s always my first companion. I just can`t leave poor dog alone in this horrible world. He is too adorable to leave him alone. But I sent him to rest in my settlement at higher levels.

And Not try to protect you when the enemy is clearly aware of you with intention to kill?

You can brainwash a dog to do nothing but walk beside you, but most dogs do have their general behavior based on their instinct and pack life.

My problem with dogmeat is him knocking my stuff over in Home Plate.

So he stays parked in Sanctuary lol

How'd you get him in Home Plate? I don't get the option.

Have him as companion, walk into home plate like any other companion will follow you into home plate! That's why there is a doghouse on the roof and also a chair so you and your man's best friend can sit and preside over Diamond City peacefully and all the arrogant turds at Colonial Taphouse can look down upon you since they do anyway lol

I just tell him to 'stay' as soon as I enter DC, then go about my business, then tell him to 'follow' as I'm leaving.

Quite simple. :P

99% of reported dogmeat problem can be solved by ordering him to stay actually. lol.

Rest 1% would be dogmeat got lost and cannot be found. lol

I love having dogmeat hidden then call him out loud from 100 feet away after I killed all the enemies in the area.

I've tried companions and they mostly get in the way and annoy me. Dogmeat gets in the way and I am amused. He goes with me everywhere, carrying one of his teddy bears and comfy pillow. I feed him steak, we sell the dog food, and he's my handicap.

Right now I'm playing as a no-guns character (on VH mode) and unfortunately this means no dogmeat - he doesn't understand that I NEED to be sneaking to get in my damage, and instead runs straight in, tail wagging. But I do adore the li'l guy, I always make sure to 'recruit' him and send him to a settlement on every playthrough
