Dear Devs: Please remember the female players

Post » Mon Feb 21, 2011 4:47 pm

I think Bethesda made a big mistake with the female versions of iron armor and the chainmail curiass in Oblivion. They should take a hint from the modding community for feminine shapes. A female version should have a thinner waist, a different shape in the chest area to allow for cleavage and wider hips because women do have wider hips. Make all armors have a male and female version. Take a hint from the modding community about book placement. a static "box" shaped like a stack of books with the names on the spines for player homes would be great! Being able to turn a fireplace and lamps on and off adds realism. A working armor/weapon display case in a basment or study. Trophys in rooms, choosing a matching bed/pillows/draqes for a bedroom.

I just want to be able to kickass in a buddy dress dammit. I want to seduce while I kill.

Also ladies don't expect any male nvdes or scantily clad, in fnv there is only one guy that is not a prosttute that you can sleep with (that really bothers me). I want to screw around dammit. You can also only do him once because you either kill him or he runs off, story of my life.

I managed to get my wife hooked on Oblivion once she got used to the controls. She started out staring at either the ceiling or the floor, and swinging wildly at nothing when she heard an enemy.

Oddly, she didn't play like I expected a woman to. She turned out to be the kick-open-the-door-and-kill-everything-that-moves type. Not once did she seem to care what her character was wearing, or how to decorate her house. All that concerned her was the next goblin skull she was going to crush beneath her steel boots.

She must have played through the main quest 4-5 times, and Shivering Isles once. (She didn't like the quest where you were addicted to feldew in a cave.) Each time, she started out as a different class. (Fighter, mage, thief, assassin.) and each time, she played the same way, donning armor and swinging her sword like Dagoth Ur himself had possessed her. When she played through the Dark Brotherhood quest line, she ditched the concept of stealth and just proceeded to swing her sword at all contracts until they were dead. Needless to say she did not collect on the bonuses. I think she played through the whole mages guild questline without casting a single spell!

I had to remind her from time to time to get her equipment repaired. She was too busy chopping minotaurs to concern herself with such trivialities as broken armor. She would smash in the face of a bandit with her bare fists after breaking her weapon before going to get repairs done.

I freaking love her.

It's already been stated that the OP has made a mundane issue sixual (actually several), and that over-sterotypical females=bad, but over-stereotypical males=good, I'd like to talk on the pants vs. skirts thing. I think the player should be able to wear either/or.

When was this stated, except by some horny woman once on the previous page? I don't agree with that at all.

C'mon guys, the OP didn't wan't do insult anyone! Don't be so sensitiv when it comes to sixual themes!

Of course a (mature) woman wants a few good looking men in a game, as well as a (mature) man wants good looking woman in a game.
Thats totally natural and has nothing to do with horniness.

And if some kind of brothel is added (what I hope for), as it was in Morrowind, then it should have male and female ahhhm..employees.
That was everything the "horny" women, as you said, were talking about.

So, there is nothing bad here and absolutely nothing to insult anyone!

In Morrowind the skirts looked cool on male characters when combined with armor. Gave some sort of Paladin/Templar look.

All hail morrowind. You can even dress like a transixual.

I was half joking, but someone on the last page said something like "Yeah, I hate it when they make woman wear unrealistic skimpy clothes/armour. Also I want to see a bunch of burly, half-naked, hairy chested men fighting!"

Then just say it's your opinion, not women's. The idea that the main wishes of female gamers is to be able to decorate their house and change outfits is a bit insulting.

I have to agree. Perhaps not "insulting", but certainly oversimplifying, to say the least. I have known male players to get crazy over their loot-house decorations ; and I bet most female players are also very much itchy to try out that newfangled dual-wilding and hoping for bad-ass finishing moves.

Good suggestions - albeit not essential ones ; bar the 4# maybe (had a key ring in Oblivion, didn't work properly ; plus for clothing, that's just weird : are you carrying a suit-carrier in your backpack ?). I like the journal suggestion especially. I'm okay if I can play regularly, but if work makes me take a long break, takes me a while to remember where I put my stuff or what I need to do. Being able to in-game post-it myself would be helpful.

All these things have nothing to do with being 'a mature female player', there are atleast the same amounts of guys (if not more) who want the same things. There's no reason to slap your briasts around and hope people will find you mysterious and hot for being a girl gamer. It's not that I don't agree with your suggestions, but people really need to stop dividing guys and gals the whole time.

I don't really see what that has to do with having female genitalia, but alright, sounds good.

I WOULD BET A 1000$ THIS TOPIC WILL REACH 5 PAGES+ BECAUSE IT'S STARTED BY A FEMALE, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Here's one for sixism!

Yep, Bethesda really needs to pay attention here. We definitely need kitchens in Skyrim!

JUST KIDDING! :P

But I always believed that female players loved things like alchemy and such. You know, the little things that have you spend a ton of time on and still remain a fun thing to do :)

I did that in Oblivion, Steel armor, gloves and boots with the blue skirt gave my Spellsword style and mobility ^_^ Wouldn't fit a male character though

Seriosuly speaking i doubt the equipment system will change for Skyrim, all clothing will continue to transform according to gender, and possibly even species.

As a lady myself, I'd like to add something to what you said about clothing. It would be really nice if pants and skirts are totally separate items. If it is pants on a man, its pants on a woman. Same with skirts, well I suppose it could be a kilt on a man. But I'd like to be able to wear pants occasionally.

Heck, yeah! Some of my gals hate wearing dresses and skirts.

I'm female, but #1 is the only item on the OP's list that I care about (and only a little). Item #6 was irritating, but I figured it was just beggars "putting it on."

I would like the ability to wear clothes with armour, as you could in Morrowind.

The Legion has no need for banks and cloths under armour, we stuff all our equipment into a backpack and we let allow the space under our man-skirts to be free of-

Right I'm on elder scrolls just remembered :D. Yeah those things are in general good I ideas but I fail to see how it is specific to women in general.

I don't actually mind-it mind-it (I generally prowl around in DB armour anyway) but it'd be a nice touch. Having compulsory skirts in Skyrim while I wore my last one when I was five felt too much like being mugged by the Irony Fairy.

I "like" it how people here are are managing to troll allover the op for admiring she is a woman and somewhat stereotypical under the disguise of being unprejudiced and non offensive... Lay off - a woman has a right and freedom to be as stereotypical as she want to be. There is nothing wrong with a woman who likes to cook, wants to have children and adores decorating her house. In fact most of our society stands on their shoulders. Yes, a woman has a right to chose a different path, but she does not have to, and being stereotypical does not make her any less "cool", important, and does not diminish her right to be heard and appreciated.
Right now all you manage to demonstrate is that you have to be a boyish-girl, and oh-I'm-so different, and have an issue with classical gender roles to fit in to a gaming community, which is not true.
Hey I my self like to cook and decorate, I wear make up and stiletto heals, oh and I have a killer figure as well as social skills, and you know what? I'm still a gamer with more than 18 years of gaming experience, and at least 9 years of modding under my garter belt :D And every time a person asks why a "girl like me plays video games" I want to kick someone for supporting the "average gamer" stereotype, because a good game can be enjoyed by all, and people should remember and accept that, there is no "exclusive" club with instruction on how you should look, feel and behave to play games.

Right...I take offense at that. So because I am a woman who doesn't like to cook, never wants any children and couldn't care less about decorating my house - I am less meaningful to society than someone who follows a stereotypical gender role? I am not boyish by any means, but I want to contribute and do something more than a woman 500 years ago could do. Just my opinion. <_<

And to the OP: I think everything you brought up is irrelevant to being a female player. I'm a female player and couldn't care less about some of the things on your list... but now, I'll likely be categorized and generalized into a gender role despite my greater efforts to distance myself from it. These sort of attitudes are very frustrating for a woman of a hugely progressive bent, as I am.

You are alive today, only because your mother dared to be stereotypical enough to give birth to you. And every other person you see around you is living they lives for the same reason. Now tell me that this is not important? All the ideals and aspirations are great, but you do still need the live to continue. If you don't want to contribute yourself (judging by never wants any children remark) than you should be double glad that somewhere out there there is a woman willing to pic the slack for you and insure that we all don't die out in the end :D You want to be a feminist? Fine, just remember that it's not about woman turning in to man, it's about everyone being equally free, and equally respected for their choices. You have no more right to dictate to other woman how they should behave, than other people have a right to tell you how you should live your live.
